The Training of Children

Deuteronomy 6:4‑7

John 10:10The thief comes only to steal and kill

and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. ESV

Amazing• Children are under overwhelming assault

from the enemy

• Morality has been down graded

• What is a parent to do?

• AS THE TWIG IS BENT, SO GROWS THE TREE.

Proverbs 22:6Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from

it. ESV

I. The Principles

A. The Right Model• "Truth is more caught than taught"

• What you allow in moderation, your children will do in excess

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of

them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie

down, and when you rise. ESV

2. Love each other • Command of husband to love wife

• "One of the greatest things a father can do for his children is to love his wife and visa‑versa.

• Submit to Authority

“THE TEST OF YOUR CHARACTER IS WHAT IT TAKES

TO STOP YOU.” Bob Jones Sr.

Faithfulness and spirituality are equated

• Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. 1 Corinthians 4:2 ESV

• When you call in sick and your are not??? – Teaching that lying is OK if it is convenient.

The Right Method

• Age old struggle of methods (God's or man's)Leviticus 18:3‑5

Godly Correction or Politically Correct

• God's standard has not changed

"Unless we understand God's standard for the family and begin

to put it in operation in our homes, we will have nothing to

pass on to the next generation." John MacArthur

"We are only one generation away from paganism"

Homer Lindsay

METHOD

Proverbs 29:15 ESV

• The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.– The rod (What you do)– reproof (What you say)– give wisdom:

DISCIPLE FOR REBELLION, CORRECTION FOR BEING A

CHILD

II. The Process

The Command1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long

in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the

discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:1-4 ESV

The Commitment• To Administer discipline

• Standards based on God's Word

• Standards must deal with attitudes that foster wrong action

• Standards must support the authorities outside the home

IF IT IS IMMORAL OR ILLEGAL, THE QUESTION IS MUTE. THERE IS NO DISCUSSION

To love Unconditionally (The commitment)

• Consider the child's strengths and encourage them

• The CautionEPH 6:4. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath.

III. The Purpose• The purpose of training children is not for

the good of the parents but for the good of the child.

• For Themselves

• For Others

• For God

How are we doing?• Break sinful habits

• Train the Child to follow God

• You can never over saturate your Child
