Principals Message You will all be aware from my Principal s Message of last week that this has been a very sad time for the College staff, students and community. Thank you to everyone for your support for us at this difficult time, whether through the kind messages we have received, the support for your children or the prayers for our community and Shawn Gavin s family. As you know, the funeral took place on Tuesday morning, an extremely bright but blustery day which saw a rainbow of the most amazing clarity of colour and vividness appear in the skies above us. As expected for such an inspirational and loved teacher and colleague, the College was extremely well represented by staff and sixth formers. Past students had travelled long distances from their universities and places of work to pay their tributes to Mr Gavin who has had such a strong and lasting impact on their lives. It was with immense pride but immeasurable sadness that we listened to the spoken tributes bravely presented by past students and staff. It was with great poignancy and smiles through the tears that our Sixth Form science students let off a twenty-one gun salutethrough a favourite Mr Gavin ex- periment that included large Coca-Cola bottles and a great deal of fizz; a memorable service for a mem- orable man. We will, of course, be liaising with Mrs Gavin and her children to establish a permanent and dedicated memorial at Christ the King College. Mr Gavins inspiration to students may well have affected the committed way in which our Year 11 stu- dents have undertaken their mock English and maths exams this week; they have been excellent in their attitude, taking them very seriously and really trying their best. Additionally, one-to-one Family Interviews have been taking place with our year 11 families, and I know how helpful all concerned are finding these. Thank you for the support that we are receiving for these meetings. I have no doubt that this important year will be less stressful and more successful for our students by working together to support these young people. Once again, this newsletter has a significant number of important messages for parents and reports on the wide range of activities and excursions that take place. As you know, we also now produce a sepa- rate Sixth Form newsletter, all in addition to our website information. There is, as always, so much hap- pening at Christ the King College that I seriously suggested to my colleagues that perhaps I needed to begin writing a blog! Principal’s Message

You will all be aware from my Principal’s Message of last week that this has been a very sad time for the College staff, students and community.

Thank you to everyone for your support for us at this difficult time, whether through the kind messages we have received, the support for your children or the prayers for our community and Shawn Gavin ’s family. It was with great poignancy and smiles through the tears that our Sixth Form science students let off a ‘twenty-one gun salute’ through a favourite Mr Gavin ex-periment that included large Coca-Cola bottles and a great deal of fizz; a memorable service for a mem-orable man. We will, of course, be liaising with Mrs Gavin and her children to establish a permanent and dedicated memorial at Christ the King College.

Mr Gavin‘s inspiration to students may well have affected the committed way in which our Year 11 stu-dents have undertaken their mock English and maths exams this week; they have been excellent in their attitude, taking them very seriously and really trying their best.

As you know, we also now produce a sepa-rate Sixth Form newsletter, all in addition to our website information. There is, as always, so much hap-pening at Christ the King College that I seriously suggested to my colleagues that perhaps I needed to begin writing a blog! The suggestion was received with considerable mirth that I am trying not to take personally…I suspect they thought, quite rightly, that it would be a never-ending blog with all that I would find to write!

Theme: Life

John Chapter 10 Verse 7 to Verse 15

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

“Christingle is a celebratory event which takes

place every year in the run up to Christmas.

Now in its 48th year, this vibrant event is

hugely popular for churches and schools, rais-

ing millions to help us change the lives of dis-

advantaged children. And all it takes is an or-

ange!” The Children’s Society

P E Footwear

The current policy regarding footwear is being reviewed due to changes in the PE curriculum. Students are currently allowed to wear trainers for all ac-tivities outside. However, to allow greater safety and access to team sports, we are now proposing to make football boots compulsory for all boys from Year 7 to Year 11. It is highly recommended that girls also wear boots when they are outside, particularly on the grass.

The very nature of PE has changed radically in the last 3 years. The move at GCSE and A-Level towards a far narrower practical option block to choose from has raised the stakes especially in terms of team games such as rugby and football.

This might be a suitable time to consider buying football boots for Christmas or during the ‘Black Friday’ shopping period. We thank you for your support.

Important Message from the Isle of Wight Public Health Team

Diarrhoea and vomiting – advice for parents and carers

Diarrhoea and vomiting (gastroenteritis) is currently circulating in the Island com-munity. Feeling sick and then vomiting is usually the first sign that your child has a ‘tummy bug’. Gastroenteritis is unpleasant and can spread very easily. It's not always possible to avoid getting gastroenteritis, but following the advice below can help stop it spreading:

Stay off work, school or nursery until at least 48 hours after the symptoms have passed. You or your child should also avoid visiting anyone in hospital during this time.

Ensure you and your child wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after using the toilet and before preparing food. Don't rely on alcohol hand gels, as they're not always effective.

Disinfect any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated. It's best to use a bleach-based household cleaner.

Wash contaminated items of clothing or bedding separately on a hot wash.

Don't share towels, flannels, cutlery or utensils while you or your child is ill.

Flush away any poo or vomit in the toilet or potty and clean the surrounding area.

Should your child become unwell with diarrhoea and/or vomiting, try to avoid going to your GP, as the virus can spread to others very easily. Call NHS 111, your GP or a Pharmacy if you're concerned or need any advice. Avoid-ing dehydration is important – give your baby/child extra fluids. Vomiting tends to last for 1-2 days, and diarrhoea tends to last for about 5 days.

For online advice see www.what0-18.nhs.uk – search ‘diarrhoea and vomiting’.

Year 9 History

1916-2016

As we remember 100 years since the middle of The First World War,

students at Christ the King College have had the chance to research

the role played by the Isle of Wight Rifles.

Ms Baker from the Museum's education department came to talk to

some of our Year 9 students. Through photographs and diary entries,

the students traced the experiences of Island families as they sent their

sons, brothers and fathers off to fight abroad. Most of the Riflemen

were sent to the disastrous Gallipoli campaign where they endured ex-

tremes of temperature, sniper and machine gun fire - as well as the

poor planning of the campaign.

As shown in the photos, students used artefacts from the Isle of Wight Rifles, to turn their

classroom into a 'pop-up' museum. The students were thoroughly engaged and enjoyed

learning in this way, as well as having a better understanding of the Islands' contribution to

The First World War.

Year 8 Trip Parliament, London

Report by Tom Kirby 8SHG

Waking up at 5:15am wasn’t in my best interests. However, my Dad and I woke up early and drove to College. At roughly 6am, I arrived at College and met up with my friends. It wasn’t long before the coaches arrived and we all got on at around 6:15am! We rolled out of the bus bay and we were on our way!

A short while later, we arrived at the Fishbourne ferry and got on the boat. After talking and playing top trumps for about 45 minutes we arrived in Portsmouth. We boarded the bus and we were off. Mr Patter-son told us that it was going to be about a two hour drive and most of the passengers groaned but I knew that I was going to enjoy it!

Two long but enjoyable hours later we arrived on the outskirts of London and everyone perked up a bit when we got a view of the London Eye! Walking towards the London Eye was a new experience for me because I had never been on the London Eye, but I wasn’t scared in fact I was excited. Going 135 me-tres in the air was an amazing experience and our group managed to fit in a Mannequin Challenge! Once we were finished, we continued our journey to the Houses of Parliament.

After crossing Waterloo Bridge, we saw the humongous structure of Parliament! It was very tense after seeing a guard with a machine gun patrolling the premises. After eating lunch we were due to go in and explore, and so after 20 minutes the tour guide came out and welcomed us in. She gave us a short talk and then led us through security where we were searched for anything which looked suspicious and then we left our bags and began the tour! We looked around almost everywhere, and we got to meet our local

MP Andrew Turner! After hav-ing a great time in Parliament we ended our time in London with another trip across Water-loo Bridge and then back onto the coach.

Another two hour bus ride home in the dark was more relaxing than the first because of the tiredness of everyone compared to the excitement and buzz of the morning. We reached the boat at about 6:45 pm and boarded shortly afterwards. The boat ride was peaceful and re-laxing and we all got back on the bus and took a short journey back to College where I met my Dad and we drove home!

Report by Lucy Parkman, 8SHG

On Monday, 21st of November I went on the Year 8 trip to Parliament. I arrived at College before 6.00 am and then hurried on to the coach which took us all to the ferry. After the ferry I was on the coach for two hours before reaching our destination…the London Eye! It towered above us like a skyscraper. I was nervous but also excited. After we made it through security we were finally on! I ran straight to the front and took a big look round London. The sights were amazing and it was a great experience. Finally

Page 9: Issue 11 25th November 2016fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have

on safe ground and after a quick look around the souvenir shop we were on our way to Parliament.

Walking through the busy streets I realised London was completely different from the Island. It was crammed full of busy people and market stalls. After dodg-ing our way through the streets we arrived at Parliament. We were given visitor cards on ar-rival which allowed us into the spectacular building. Then we had to go through another set of security before making our way to the lunch hall. We ate our lunch quickly, eager to get into Parliament. After lunch we met our tour guide who took us through the gates and into Par-liament. Then another tour guide came and split boys and girls into two separate groups. Before the tour had even started I was marvelling at all the highly decorated walls. It was so amazing to actually see the inside of the famous building. There was even some famous faces like Michael Gove who we saw whilst we were walking through the halls. After the tour we went into a small side room and started our workshop on making laws. In the workshop we made up our own law and went through the stages of how laws are passed. Then suddenly our local MP, Andrew Turner, walked through the double doors to come and talk to us about his job and the Island. Lots of people asked him questions about his job and why he wanted to do it. It was really inspiring. Then we all filed out of the room, col-lected our bags and headed back to the coach. I was so tired but it was an amazing day and one I will never forget.

Visit to Hampshire Police

Headquarters

At the start of this year, many of our Year 9 stu-dent took part in the Hampshire Constabulary Po-lice Apprentice ‘Sexting’ campaign competi-tion. All of our students were given the opportuni-ty to learn about the risks and consequences of 'Sexting', with the set task of design a campaign to inform other teenagers about the dangers of Sex-ting. Students had to complete their competition entry in their own time. They could work on their own or in groups and were encouraged to use different media to get the message across. We held our own competition at college and Ella Bush-nell, Year 9 was the winner. Ella's entry was then submitted to the Hampshire Constabulary compe-

tition. We were invited to the finals event at the Police Head-quarters in Netley, near Southampton on Friday 18th Novem-ber. Ella was joined by Poppy Nigh, Milly Bacon, Crystal Price, Jack Cooper and Taylor Knight, who also submitted very good en-tries.

After driving over to Netley, on the Friday evening, we saw the winning finalists present their campaigns before having a party dinner. We were then lucky enough to have a preview of the 'Is it Worth It?' roadshow which will be touring Hampshire and the Isle of Wight schools, and coming to Christ the King College in Febru-ary. The roadshow was excellent with games and music and cov-ered all aspects of e-safety. Students thoroughly enjoyed the vis-it.

Mrs Stirling

Drama at Chichester Festival Theatre!

All GCSE Drama students in Year 10 and Year 11 -went to Chichester Festival Theatre to see Frantic Assembly's - 'Things I know to be true'. The students and staff found it a very profound theatrical ex-perience and the piece has inspired students with their future devising. We are really proud of how the students responded to the piece and they demonstrated such maturity and interest in the perfor-mance and were great ambassadors for the College.
