Dear Parishioner, The story of the Transfiguration in today's Gospel is wonderful. Peter is blown away, doesn't know what to do or say. Seems to think maybe they should stay where they are forever. Suggests he would build a little shelter for Jesus, as well as for Moses and Elijah. Will that make their stay permanent? Then the voice - "This is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Pretty much the same words spoken as Jesus emerged from the waters of the Jordan when he was baptized by John. There can be no doubt that this is the Messiah. Why then were they afraid? Isn't this what they had been waiting for, hoping for, praying for? I was asked to preach the homily at the funeral of one of my neighbors, on Monday last, at St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette. My friend, Dennis Weber, loved to fish and the holy card distributed had a picture of him doing what he loved. The fisherman's prayer was on the reverse side of the card. It goes like this:
I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's soft landing net, I'm peacefully asleep
that in his mercy I be judged as good enough to keep.
In Luke, Chapter 5, when Jesus told Peter to go out in the deep water and drop his nets, he responded: "We have worked hard all night and not caught anything, but Lord at your command we will do so". They caught so many fish their nets were tearing. Turning to Jesus in amazement Peter says: "Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man". Peter, the fisherman, full of bluster; but when you come right down to it, in the presence of this magnificent moment, were he and James and John afraid that, ultimately they might not be judged as good enough to keep? Was remaining on the high mountain in ecstasy a way to postpone the challenge of the hard work and the trials ahead, and maybe even being judged? Aren't we all sinful? Aren’t we all a little bit afraid we are not good enough? But fortunately it is not about us; it is about our God, who loves us so much he is willing to forgive us anything if we but turn to him. Like Peter, James and John, we can't stay on the mountain top forever. Ecstatic moments come and go. The good news - when we descend and return to the nitty-gritty of our everyday lives, our God remains with us. Through our ups and downs our God never leaves us. He will be with us always. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS What’s Happening in Religious Education? THE LENTEN SEASON During the season of Lent, each classroom has Lenten symbols and special Lenten activities. In addition, our 6th grade Reli-gious Education classes will be going to Am Shalom for a special Seder observance on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Parents/Guardians provide all transportation. NO RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES ON SUNDAY, MARCH 16 Classes will resume on Sunday, March 23. PLEASE PRAY FOR CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES AND THEIR FAMILIES

School News As we enter into the 2nd Week of Lent, please join us on Tuesday morning for our Lenten Prayer Service at 8:30 AM in the school gymnasium. Following the prayer service our 8th Grade Flower Ceremony will take place at 9:00AM. The 8th grade will be having a dance class after school on Monday, March 17th! HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY! All week we will be collecting for the Canned Food Drive to benefit the New Trier Township Pantry. Please give generously. On Tuesday evening the 8th grade will have a Confirmation practice at 7:00PM in church. Wednesday morning, the Navy Band: Woodwind Quintet will be coming to our school at 9:00AM. Please come and enjoy the music! HAPPY ST. JOSEPH’S DAY! 8TH GRADE CONFIRMATION will take place on Wednesday evening at 7:00PM in church. Thursday will be a noon dismissal with optional Parent/Teacher conferences to follow. The 2nd Annual Lenten MiniMarathon will be Wednesday, March 26th! SHS students will walk/run to raise money for a recover-ing wounded warrior. Our very own Junior Tower Players will be performing next week. Thursday, March 27th and Friday, March 28th at 7:00PM! Lenten Regulations
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength accord-ing to ones needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.
