Preview of Next Sunday’s Readings Second Sunday of Lent

March 12, 2017 First reading: Genesis 12:1-4a Second reading: Timothy 1:8b-10 Third reading: Matthew 17:1-9 A reading from the book of the Genesis The LORD said to Abram: "Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father's house to a land that I will show you. "I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you." Abram went as the LORD directed him. A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Romans Beloved: Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began, but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid." And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Religious Education Office First Sunday of Lent March 5, 2017 Sunday’s Gospel, Reflecting in God’s Word One of our primary goals as parents is to help our children discover their gifts and use them generously in a way that glorifies God. From a very early age we can remind our children of the source of their gifts and encourage them to use them humbly. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family There are many opportunities in the media for your family to recognize the gifts of other people. There are movie and television stars, musicians, entertainers, and sports figures to name a few. As you watch television, listen to songs and observe these figures, discuss as a family what the gifts of these people are. Consider today's Gospel story and share ideas about how these people are following God's will (or how they might avoid temptations by Satan). Compare how they use their gifts with the way others (such as teachers, grandparents, ect.) use their gifts. Question of the Week Children: What helps you do the right thing when you want to do something wrong? Adults: What helpful advice could you offer someone faced with a temptation? Pregunta de la semana Niños: ¿Que te alluda acer algo bien cuando quieres acer algo mal? Adultos: ¿Que consejo le darias a alguien que tiene la tentacion de hacer algo mal? RELIGIOUS ED. OFFICE HOURS R.E. Office hours are Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm; Wednesday 12:00 to 8:00 pm. Friday by appointment only. Closed Saturday and Sunday. For more information you can contact Irma at (323) 725-7578 Ext. 312.

All are welcome!

Transportation safety is key The safety of your children is often entrusted to other drivers – bus drivers, family members, friends’ parents, coaches – and parents should be aware of who is in charge of transportation. Although you cannot control everything, you can teach your children how to ride in another person’s vehicle. Teach kids to always wear seatbelts, and avoid distracting behavior that will take the driver’s attention away from the road. Ask your school about their policies and the requirements for those who may be in charge of transportation. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Child Care Providers Urged to Check Vehicle Safety, Training, and Health of Drivers,” contact [email protected] or (213) 637-7227.
