From the Pastor June 21 is the date of the summer solstice; the longest day of the year. It is the official beginning of summer, although we’ve been experiencing some sum-mer weather already. Lots of activities take place during the summer—family vacations, Vacation Bible School,

free lunches for kids at various places around the city, etc. These are good things.

Summer also seems to bring with it a decrease in worship at-tendance. With all the other activities available, coming to church on Sunday mornings assumes a low priority for many people. Financial data from 2017 indicates that June and August receipts were sub-stantially lower than expenditures. In July, however, receipts met the expenses.

Now that the exterior project is completed, payments will begin on the loan for that project. Both the General Fund and Capital Im-provement Plan need to be supported for the ministry we do at 6th and Court streets.

It’s time to think about Vacation Bible School. We have a fun, Bible-based program called “Abundance Orchard.” Please see de-tails on page 2 of this edition of The Trumpeter. Friends of members are more than welcome to attend.

Also see details on page 2 about how we can help supply food for those dealing with food insecurity. Up from the Earth is a pro-gram that invites people to plant an extra row of vegetables and share the produce with others. We have free seeds on the lower level for people to take, plant, and share.

Another mission opportunity will be providing a potluck meal at the Century II Apartments on June 24. Volunteers are needed to set up and cleanup and to provide salads, main courses, and desserts. Please help us continue to be good neighbors to our friends at Cen-tury II Apartments.

As you travel this summer, be safe and have fun. Blessings!

Vacation Bible School This year’s VBS will be held June 11-14 from 5:30-7:30 PM each evening. The theme is Abundance Orchard and will feature sto-ries about Jesus and meals. Each evening an offering will be received with the money going to Society of St. Andrew. Every 3¢ giv-en will put one serving of healthy, nourishing food on the plate of a hungry person here in the United States. (Check out the Society on the Internet for more information.) We can use teachers and teen helpers. The evening will include a Bible story, art project, music time, and snacks. Please in-vite friends and neighbors to attend this fun and educational event.

Up From The Earth Members of Augustana: Do you have a vegetable garden? Do you have room for an extra row of vegeta-bles? From the abundance God provides us, it would be good to share with those who experience food inse-curity. Seeds are available in the narthex. Founded on February 1, 2014, Up From The Earth exists to connect extra produce from home gardens to people in need. Up from the Earth is a voluntary system for connecting excess produce from home gardens to people in need. The program encourages home gardeners to "grow an extra row" and facilitates the gathering and dis-tribution of excess fruits and veggies to those in need through existing food pantries. Produce is taken from the designated collection sites to any one of a dozen or so local food pantries who have the storage and capacity to distribute it to their clients. To date, over a dozen Sioux City churches of varying denominations have stepped up to close the gap between garden and table. Each congregation has appointed a Garden Produce Coordinator to be a point person for the project. The Garden Produce Coordinators work with home gardeners within their congrega-tions to collect fresh produce and deliver it to local food pantries for distribution to families in need. Supporting the effort is a group of local volunteers who have formed the Up From The Earth core committee.

Up From The Earth is thrilled to report that during its inaugural year, over 6000 pounds of fresh produce was placed into the local food pantry system. You may bring your produce to the church and we will add it to the campaign at St. Mark Lutheran and First Lutheran churches.

Worship Helper Stewardship Each Sunday there are a handful of

people who are noticed as being wor-ship leaders, but it takes many more to help a worship service happen. Some of these people might not see their work as a ministry, but it is. It is also worship stewardship...taking care of things hav-ing to do with worship.

People are welcomed with smiling faces in the narthex by the ushers and greeters. Acolytes, an assisting minister, the pastor, and communion assistants are visible leaders and helpers to the worship experience. The choir, organist, and pianist play very important roles in supporting our musical worship. The technical assistants provide the visual tools for the various parts of the liturgy on the screen. The Altar Guild has al-ready done the setup for the sacraments and is ready to clean up after worship.

We can use more people in each of these groups to assist with the ongoing worship at Augustana. Is there one or more of these positions that interest you? We’d be glad to have more help-ers.

Thank you.

Ushers for June Skip Schossow (captain), Mike Moos, Jean Huff, David Midland
