From the Pastor Elizabeth has left Sioux City for Gowen, Michigan and has begun her internship there. Blessings to you, Elizabeth and thank you for the ministry you provided for the congre-gation of Augustana! I’m beginning the last month of my sabbatical. Where

has the time gone? Highlights of this month include a trip for Jane and me to New Orle-

ans for the ELCA God’s Grace in Action Conference, another wedding in Minneapolis, and a hymn fest at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville.

Could there be a better place to be in August than New Orleans, Louisiana? Hotter than Iowa and more humid? We’ll survive as we begin a week’s stay in this fun city. We will arrive a few days early so we can do some touristy things before the conference begins on August 10. I’ve been to New Orleans a few times, but Jane has never been. We are certainly looking forward to our time there.

The conference will be held in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the sixth largest convention center in the nation. During the convention we will be able to attend several workshops and participate in “God’s Grace in Action” (experiential learning events). Of course, we will also be worshiping with people from all over the ELCA.

I will have the honor of officiating at the wedding of Ellie Frisch and Joe Bourne in Minneapolis a few days after we get back from New Orle-ans. Ellie was one of the three young people in my first confirmation group at Augustana.

On August 28 I’ll be presenting a hymn fest at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville. What a fitting way for me to close my sabbatical—at the console of a pipe organ. This will be a nice reminder of how my life as a Lutheran began here at Augustana in 1978. Soli Deo Gloria (To God alone be the glory!)

See you soon. In Christ’s name,

Do you like to be around young kids??! MOPS Ministry at St. James Unit-ed Methodist Church in Sioux City is looking for volunteers to watch chil-dren ages birth to five during our meetings that start in September. MOPS stands for "Mothers of Pre-schoolers" and is a Christian ministry designed to help women grow and be supported during their years of early motherhood. Shelley Hexom and her kids are members of this group. The group meets every other Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. There will be at least two adults in each room, so don't worry you won't be alone. We are also looking for volunteers to watch kids during the leadership meetings and/or a Bible study for the moms which are held on other mornings. If you would be interested in helping even once a month that would be great! If you are interested in either helping out full time or even just occasionally please let Shelley know by email [email protected] or phone 712-239-7156.

Stewardship Corner Giving money to the church is a symbolic act—the offering of ourselves in service and de-votion to God. Giving is a practical matter, too, because the offering makes it possible for the church to pay its bills and carry out its mission in Christ’s name. Giving on a regular basis is one way to give thanks to God for all the blessings with which we are blessed.

Do you love art? Do you love the CROP Walk? Over the last several years Augustana has become quite involved with the annual CROP Walk. Many of you have either donated to the cause or been a walker! This year the Sioux City CROP Walk organization is once again hosting one of the Children's Area Activity Booths at the Sioux City Art Center's annual ArtSplash fundraiser and we are looking for volunteers to help run the table and assist the children with their art project. The money raised during the event will go partially to the art center and the rest will go to CROP! Last year several members of Augustana helped with the booth and be-cause of all of our work, the Augustana CROP Walk team raise more than $700 just from that one event! Have questions? Here are a few answers... “When and where is ArtSplash?” ArtSplash is held on Labor Day weekend (Saturday, September 3rd and

Sunday, September 4th) at Riverside Park in Sioux City. “Will I be out in the sun the whole time?” No, we will be under a tent (which also comes

in handy if it starts raining).

“I'm not artistic, I don't think I would be very good at this.” FALSE!! If you worry you aren't artistic... no worries! The project is simple to do and all you have to do is help give the kids the supplies they'll need to make it and watch their creativity take shape!

“How long will each shift be?” That is dependent on you! The hours of ArtSplash are Sat-urday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We would love to have you help us for anywhere from one hour to the whole day on either or both of these days!

“I've never walked in the CROP Walk, can I still help at the activity booth?” Of course!!

“This sounds fun! How can I sign up for a shift?” If you are interested in helping or have a few more questions contact Shelley Hexom at [email protected] or call (712) 239-7156.Again we can use as much help as we can get. The Art Center estimates we will have about 300 kids participate over the two day event and they suggest having 3 to 4 people at our table at all times. Thank you in advance for your helping to spread the word about CROP!

Christian Education Proverbs 22:6 “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Sunday School will be kicking off again starting on September 11. If you are interested in teaching or co-teaching please get in touch with Shelley Hexom or Pastor Del. No prior teaching experi-ence is required. Even if you are only available once or twice a month to teach we can make that work! Our Sunday school program is open to kids

starting at age 3.

“Curious About CROP?” Did you know that our Siouxland CROP Hunger Walk placed 59th out of 1,200 events nationwide in 2015, earning the “Cream of the Crop” sta-tus?? With our $30,787 in donations, we ranked #5 in the state of Iowa. And the Augustana Team is a big part of the 2015 success. Last year our church had 8 walkers who raised $1,498! Church World Service is celebrat-ing its 70th year, since beginning in 1946, in the after-math of World War II. The city-wide CROP team is meet-ing already to begin planning for our 40

thanniversary Siouxland CROP

Hunger Walk on 10/16/16!! Mark your calendars now! We hope you will consider joining the Augustana team this year or donating to the great cause!

An Opportunity to Serve Augustana members assist in preparing food and serving meals at the Soup Kitchen 8 times per year, in September, December, April and June. This involves 2 hours in the afternoon (2-4 pm), for preparation and 2-3 hours (4:45-6:30 to serve and clean-up). Youth volunteers must be at least 13-14 years of age, no more than 3-4 youth on any given shift, and must always be supervised by an adult and are expected to work until cleanup is completed, (dishes are done, ta-bles are cleaned and washed and floor is swept).
