Over thirty of our members and friends enjoyed a day of travel and learning
at the Biblical History Center in LaGrange. An "Air Ride" on a Prevost
charter bus driven by our member, Chuck Mabey, took us through downtown
Atlanta with a close up view of the collapsed section of I 85. We experienced
an authentic meal from new testament times and a guided tour describing life
and times in the Holy Land. A really great day with great friends.

JUNE 2017 THE VIEW from Presbyterian Hill
I’m not going to lie. I am ready for a vacation. I’m ready to get away, sit on a
beach, and just BE for a few days. Maybe get up from my beach chair long
enough to put my toes in the ocean or grab another bottle of water to drink, but
that’s it.
To say my body is trying to tell me to rest is an understatement. Have you ever
heard your body try and communicate that to you? Unfortunately, I find, I usually
don’t actually hear mine until it’s nearly too late. When I’m at the point of
exhaustion--that point where by 1:30 in the afternoon all I want to do is lie down
and close my eyes. I am really beginning to understand Jesus’ need to recharge
every so often.
In Luke 5:16 as word was quickly getting out about the healing miracles of Jesus, it says, “But He
would withdraw to deserted places and pray.” Jesus couldn’t go anywhere without being bombarded
with “the crowds” and their needs. I am drawn to the verb “withdraw” here. It is the greek word
ὑποχωρὑω (transliterated as hypochōreō) which literally can mean “with room to receive”. I
interpret this as even Jesus needed to make room to receive that which God had in store for him.
Even Jesus’ life was filled up with the little things of the everyday. Even Jesus needed to rid himself of
the minutia that was filling up His life. He knew eventually, it would be these things that would end
up weighing him down and if left unattended, would prevent him from thriving.
Getting away, taking time off, withdrawing, is important for each of us if we are to “recharge” our
batteries. Just as I plug my phone in every night to make sure it is ready to go for the long haul of
the day ahead, we, too, are to recharge our bodies AND our souls. This can look like all sorts of things
from fishing to sitting on a beach to taking a quick walk around the block as the sun sets and many
things in between.
To be the whole person God created, we must take time to recharge our batteries. I want to
challenge you this summer to find some time of “withdrawing” with Jesus. Don’t be afraid to be alone,
to be quiet without the cell phone or kids/spouse/BFF around. Spend some time just listening---to
yourself, to your breath, to the birds, to the wind, to God. Give yourself permission to unclench and
release things you might have been holding on to for a while and “loose” the knot of your soul.
Like I said at the beginning, I’m exhausted---I’m filled up and need to make some room. So, I’m
going to the beach to withdraw. My hope is to return home energized “with room to receive”. My
hope is to reclaim my “wholeness” as a child of God.
Might we all intentionally seek more “room” in the summer season ahead.
Go in joy. Go in peace.
Pastor Andy
A little P.S. for this month:
Andy’s summer schedule is as follows:
May 27-June 10--family vacation

NEW MEMBERS - ANNE AND ELVIS BOGGAN
We welcome the Boggan family to our fellowship as they
relocate to our area from the San Francisco area to be closer
to family. Elvis and Ann have quickly gotten involved in the
ministries of FPC and are regular attendees at worship. Ann, a
former preschool teacher, has helped with The Growing Place
and Elvis is working at the Food Pantry and packing food with
the Back Pack Ministry. They come from strong church
backgrounds and their pastor from their California church has
even come to their new home here to visit. Ann was on the
board of an animal shelter in California and was always willing
to rescue dogs that had special needs. Elvis supported her in
this and they now provide a home to 24 dogs, 20 of which
made the trip across the country. The county Animal Control
made a visit to the house and found every one of them had up-to-date shot records and were well cared
for. We will miss Ann for the next month as she has returned to the west coast for a wedding and family
visit. We are happy to have this loving couple in our church family.

Lunch Bunch Goes "Hawg" Wild
Eighteen folks enjoyed catfish and BBQ at Hawg Wild in Clarkesville. The lunch gatherings take place every month and offer an opportunity for fellowship and food. During the summer recess of our Wednesday evening meal and study we will get together on one Wednesday each month at an area restaurant. Make this part of your monthly plans to enjoy a meal and keep up with your fellow members.
"Take Us Out to the Ballgame"
A small group of Presbyterian Men gambled on the weather and had a great time under sunny skies watching the Gwinnett Braves defeat the Buffalo Bison 6 to 5. We enjoyed seeing a fair amount of action with three home runs and a close finish that ended the game just as the rain began for the drive home. The rainy week unfortunately caused a few who had planned to go to cancel but we all agreed to do it again next season.

PRESBYTERIAN MEN
By Bruce Morgan
The Presbyterian Men will hold their monthly dinner and fellowship on June 13th at 6:00 in the Fellowship
Hall. We always enjoy an excellent meal prepared by members of the Presbyterian Women and a time of
study and "story telling". We invite all men from our congregation to join in.
GRADUATING SENIORS It's that time of the year when we want to honor our Graduating Seniors. This past Sunday we honored 4
outstanding Seniors that we claim at FPC.
Liam Wallace Gedney, son of Catherine Gibbs and Page Gedney, brother of Mallory Nonnemaker and Chloe
Gedney is graduating as Salutatorian of his White County High class of 2017. He is planning on attending
Georgia Tech next year.
Charlsie Raye Maddox is the daughter of Brent and Jodi
Maddox. She is the third child of four, and sister of
Colton, Chloe and Chandler Maddox. She is graduating
from White County High School and is planning on
attending North Greenville College next year on a Soccer
Scholarship.
Maria Donnina Sophia Vetrano, (Mia) the daughter of
Frank and Sandra Vetrano. She is the fourth child of
five and sister of Frank, Farrah, Savannah and Nicky.
Mia is graduating from White County High School and is
planning on attending The University of Georgia next
year.
Greyson Mathue Ekdale-McBride is the son of Jim and
Michelle McBride and the grandson of Penny and Bob
Murdoch. He lives in Pinellas, Florida but attends church
when visiting and was confirmed at FPC. Greyson is graduating from Pinellas Park High School from the
Criminal Justice Academy. He will be joining the Army Reserves and beginning College at St Petersburg in
January 2018.
We wish our Graduates well and are proud of all their accomplishments! Always remember you have a place
waiting for you at First Presbyterian Cleveland!

YOUTH SUMMER MISSION TRIP
Thanks for the help with the yard sale. The proceeds will be going to help fund some of our youth on a
very special Mission trip. Twenty students and adults from Cornelia, Clarkesville and Cleveland Presbyterian
churches will be headed to Saint Simons Island for a mission trip June 25-30, 2017. The BRIDGE Mission
Program at St. Simons Presbyterian Church is an adventure in mission and ministry that enables youth to
build relationships with Jesus Christ, fellow participants, and new friends in faith while experiencing and
inspiring diversity, grace, and ecology. Led by the BRIDGE Mission Program staff and volunteers, each
week welcomes a different group to stay at SSPC for five days of hands-on mission in Glynn County,
Georgia. Worksites include homeless outreach, river/marsh cleanup, and work in disadvantaged
neighborhoods. One day of the program focuses on experimental learning about care for God’s creation
through visiting with a local environmental advocacy group and kayak tour of the marshes and rivers
surrounding St. Simons Island. It sounds like a great mix of hard work and fun.

Mission in Action!
Saturday, May 6 was a beautiful, crisp day for a community to come
together to help be hope one home at a time. Habitat for Humanity of NEGA
was chosen to participate in the 2017 National Women Build Day project
where women (and men) are encouraged to come together around Mother's
Day to work on an active build for a deserving partner family.
Our church was well-represented with 10 members building on site and 7
more who helped by providing lunch for a hungry crew. This group worked
hard and built all the interior walls, thanks in large part to Pastor/Carpenter
Andy's expertise of laying out the walls so the "build crew" (in which Bekah
helped) could come behind him to nail them together. Penny, Bob and
Bruce worked with others to build the back porch stoop. Lindsay helped
secure the house by installing hurricane clips and building walls. Phil, Kim,
and Becky jumped in and lent a helping hand wherever needed.
As always, PW did an awesome job feeding our workers and helping spread
Presbyterian love through food.
Thanks to everyone who participated, and those who participated in spirit for
this first Mission experience since I became Mission Elder. Now, just watch
out..... more opportunities for our community, our neighbors and our church
to come!
