2015 Outstanding Vocational StudentAwardsBanquet

On May 21st, 2015, Diman celebrated its annu-al Outstanding Vocational Student (OVS) Awards banquet. The OVS Award is given to those students who excel in both their academic studies, and their vocational area. Being able to succeed in both is not an easy task, but they have pushed themselves to the limit and have achieved their goals. They have

strong work ethic and effort, and are excellent ex-amples for other students to follow. Determination, hard work, and their academic and vocational ac-complishments have helped to prepare them for the world and the journey ahead, vocational and oth-erwise. The future is certainly bright for this year’s Outstanding Vocational Students.

The Varsity softball team was undefeat-ed in league play this year with a record of 8-0. Four players were chosen for the league all-stars, Senior Hailey Levesque (pitcher), Junior Katrina Rachel (catch-er), Junior Marissa Matias (shortstop), and Sophomore Stephanie Perron (first base). The team finished the regular sea-son with a record of 13-5 which put them seeded 5th in the South Sectional State Tournament. Diman’s season came to an end when they were defeated by Bourne High School in the first round.

The Diman Boys Track team won the Mayflower League Championship in May 2015. Chico Medeiros (class of 2016), placed 6th at the Division III League State Meet, advancing him to all-states, where he placed 16th in the 100m dash. Also competing at the Division III state meet were Kyle Cordeiro (class of 2016), the 4 x 4 team; Evan Vasconcellos (class of 2018), Matthew Tillson (class of 2015), Joshua Brockman (class of 2016), Cody DaCruz (class of 2015) and Aaron Reed (class of 2016).

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony

Photos provided by Karina AguiarWritten by Karina Aguiar

The newest members of the National Honor Soci-ety were officially recognized as proud members of the organization on May 16, 2015. These students have worked incredibly hard to earn their spots as official members in this nation-wide organiza-tion. Writing entrance essays, obtaining teacher recommendations, maintaining a 3.0 GPA, and volunteering 15+ hours at numerous events were just some of the requirements of induction. All of this hard work has finally paid off with their well-earned award. Congratulations to all new mem-bers of the National Honor Society!

The Genes in Space Team reviewed 330 entries from more than 700 applicants from across the country. Of these, we were one of 12 proposals that were awarded an Honorable Mention. The team was impressed by the quality, creativity, and innovative nature of our proposal and the experimental design. The team is being award-ed medals and certificates for their innovative work. We are all very proud!

nected with the troubles of these poor Russian Jews. The lead role seemed very comfortable and con-fident in his on stage abilities. I would say he had good reason to as well because his voice resonated throughout the auditorium with a thundering boom. Every dance that was displayed was clearly choreo-graphed expertly. A great example would be a dance in which the ac-tors placed bottles atop their hats and proceeded to go about a very powerful dance, all the while keep-ing the bottles in their place without even a slight wobble. I would say my biggest problem with the production would be that at some moments I found it hard to understand what the actors were saying. It wasn’t their projection that

Diman’s stage was recently used for what has become an unusual use: a play!

In April, Fall River’s Janice MacDon-ald’s Studio Theatre Company and Showbiz Kidz performed Fiddler on the Roof in our auditorium. While the play wasn’t mind-blowing, it was decent. However, the price of admission did seem a slight bit high. The cast all seemed to know their part and at times I felt truly con-

caused this but their pronunciation. At some points words degraded into raw sound which made it harder to understand what was going on. So all in all the Fiddler on the Roof was a good play and, on opening night when the price for students was only five dollars, well worth the mon-ey. After that night however, when the cost was lifted to twenty dollars, I couldn’t help but thinking it was a tad bit overpriced.

New Assistant Superintendent/Principal Kyle Alves may have only been at the job since December, but the last 6 months might be the longest 6 months of his life. “It really is a 24/7 position,” grinned Alves. “I give every parent my cell phone number, so I get phone calls, texts, and emails at all hours of the day. My wife has to tell me to put my phone away,” he laughed. But all the hard work is worth it to the Somerset resi-dent. “I love my job. It really is true that when you love your job, you never work a day in your life,” he said. “It’s all worth the effort when you see kids succeed, when you see staff grow and innovate and make connections with the kids.”“Going forward, we’re trying to build a school commu-nity that’s collaborative, a team that is focused on in-novation in our vocational and academic programs, lit-eracy, communication, developing 21st-century skills, and preparing kids for careers and college,” said Alves.

“Not every kid is going to go to college, and that’s not our mission, but they have to have the skills to catapult themselves to the top of their profession, whatever the profession that they choose to pursue.”Alves looks forward to starting his first full year in the position this September. “Starting the year fresh after having 8 months under my belt is exciting. We have new initiatives starting in the summertime, such as devel-oping a master schedule that’s designed to maximize teaching and learning. We’re going to adopt new poli-cies to ensure that students are in class and not being pulled out for various reasons, that’s very important to me. The other piece that’s critical is to further develop literacy and developing problem solving through math-ematics, plus innovation in the shops.”
