StricklandCharlesEdwardNevilleRolfewasbornin1789,eldestsonofGeneralNevilleoftheRoyalArtillery.Heassumedthenameand arms of Rolfe by royal warrant in 1837, upon receiving thebequest of the estates at Heacham and Sedgeford, from EdmundRolfe,adistantrelativewhohadnoissue.
EducatedatWadhamCollege,Oxford,BA1812,MA1816,hewasordainedin1814andsubsequentlybecamedomesticchaplaintothe Duke of Kent in 1814 and to the Duke of Somerset in 1825.He was appointed vicar of Heacham in Norfolk in 1838. Hisfirst wife,Agnes, was the only daughter of Henry Fawcett, MPfor Carlisle. They married in 1814 and had five sons and fourdaughters. In 1833 he married Dorothy, widow of the Rev TTThomason,ChaplaintotheHonourableEastIndiaCompany.
Itisknownthathewasanenthusiasticcollectorofbothnaturalandarchaeoalogicalitems,aswellashavingakeeninterestinart.RolfehadhadanumberofartistsstayingforlongperiodstostudyartisticendeavoursatHeachamHall.Itissaidthathehadalargecoach
builtinwhichhetooktheseartistsonexcursionstodrawandpaintbuildingsorarticlesofinterestinandaroundthearea.HewasespeciallyinterestedintheareaofNorfolkandpartofhiscollectionofportraitsofNorfolkcelebrities,originaldrawings,topographicalandantiquarian,weresoldbySotheby’s.Someofthesepieceshadbeenusedtoextraillustrate‘Blomefield’sHistoryoftheCountyofNorfolk’(compiledbyFrancisBlomefieldandpublishedin1805).Later,in1929,anumberofwater-colourdrawingsfromthecollectionwerealsousedtoillustrateapublicationcompiledbyhisgreatgrandson,ClementRolfe-Ingleby,andentitled‘AsupplementtoBlomefield’sNorfolk.’
StricklandRolfediedin1852.HeachamHallwasdestroyedbyfirein1941,whilstbeingoccupiedbytheRAF.
Thenumismaticcollectionhasremainedinthehandsofdescendentsandrepresentsasnapshotofthetastesandinterestsofaneducatedcountrygentlemananddivine.TheEnglishcoinsspanthreecenturiesandincludeskeyrarities,suchasthepattern“Incorrupta”and“ThreeGraces”crowns,aswellassomerareandinterestingcoppers.Itisamazingtothinkthatthecrownswereprobablyacquiredsoonaftertheywereissued,whichwouldaccountfortheirremarkablestateofpreservation.
ThereisaninterestingselectionofcolonialcoinsincludinganumberofEastIndiaCompanycoinsfromIndiaandtheFarEast,aswellasStHelena.Itwouldbetemptingtothinkthatthesemayhavebeengiftsfromrelativeswhotravelledoverseas.Weknowthathissecondson,HenryFawcettRolfe,servedintheRoyalNavy,anddiedintheFarEast.AmongstthecolonialcoinsaresomesuperbearlyAmericancoins,apewterContinentalDollar, somewellpreservedRosaAmericanacoppers, andamagnificentVirginiahalfpenny.TherewereRolfesamongsttheearlysettlersinAmerica,notablyassuccessfulVirginiatobaccofarmers.ItwasaRolfewhobroughttheill-fatednativeAmericanPocahontastoEngland,butthefamilyassureusthereisnodirectconnectiontothisline.
PerhapsthemostremarkablepartofthecollectionistheseriesofNorfolkandSuffolk17thCenturytokens.Thisisasubstantialcollectionof365pieces,formedwithobviousprideanddedication,asisconfirmedbythemeticulousnotebookkeptbyRolfefortheNorfolkpart.Whetherhedrewtheastonishingpenandinkillustrationshimself,oremployedanartisttodothem,wewillneverknow.Therearenumerousraritiesforbothcounties,manyinremarkablyhighgrade.Thesoberingthoughtisthatthiscollectionwascompletelyunknowntothekeyresearchersandcataloguersofthisseriesinthe19thand20thCenturies,WilliamBoyne(1858),GeorgeWilliamson(1889)andlatterly,MichaelDickinson.Thetokenslistedinthenotebookwillbesoldwithitinonelot,tomaintaintheintegrityofthecollection.
