  • To the Barony of the Steppes and her Canton of Glaslyn, greetings and thanks,

War of the Rams was so much fun. We had another great Steppes camp again this year.

As always it’s a busy time in The Steppes!

Sunday Dec 8th we will have a canvas banner class taught by Baroness Katheryn Cunningham at Makerspace.

Saturday Dec 14th is our Christmas party. Bring a potluck item to share. The Barony will provide the meats. Also bring a $15 gift for the gift exchange if you wish to participate. See the Facebook event page for more information.

Wednesday December 4th will be the last Newcomers Class in this session. A gift will be given to the person that attends all 6 sessions.

Don’t worry if you’ve missed any of our Newcomers classes- you can always attend the next season of classes.

Whewww!!! That’s a lot of fun and food! See everyone soon! Peter and Sarah

  • Words from our Seneschal

    Greetings, Mighty Oakwood!

I write this on the eve of this year’s War of the Rams. However, I’m going to

look into the future a few days and say that it was a glorious event and that

we all had a wonderful time! (And that’s how we’ll all remember it by the time

you see this, so I’m sure I’m right.)

As you all know, our next big event to look forward to is Twelfth Night,

which will be held on January 4, 2020 at the Sherman Municipal Ballroom at

405 Rusk St., Sherman, TX 75090. The theme this year is King Arthur and

the Knights of the Round Table, and the event stewards are Lady Johanna

Jakobsdottir and Viscount Galen of Bristol. Baroness Alessandra Beatrice

Desiderio will be putting on a truly spectacular feast. It’s going to be a

wonderful event, and I’m looking forward to seeing you all there. Also, it

should go without saying, but many hands make light work and an event like

this doesn’t happen without the support of people like you. Please step up

    and volunteer!

I’m pleased to announce that this year’s Christmas Party will be at the home

of Mistress Katerine le Roux d’Anjou and Don Alain de la Rue, who will also

be our new Baron and Baroness! This is your chance to come and get to

know them better and enjoy the hospitality of their home. Bring a dish to

share at the potluck and if you want to participate in the gift exchange, bring

a $15 gift that you would be happy to receive. To RSVP on the event

announcement on Facebook, go here: https://www.facebook.com/

events/2443837555934006/ and let everyone know you’ll be there.

Speaking of events, I know it seems like a long time from now, but we need

to be thinking ahead to Warlord. At this time, we do not have a bid. Please

consider if you are inspired to volunteer to make that happen.

I am pleased to announce that I have two deputies, Lord Caradoc and Her

Ladyship Aurelia Yverneau. However, we’d love it if someone else

volunteered as well. This is a great way to meet people and learn about how

things get done in the barony. If you’re interested, please email me at

    [email protected].

    Greetings to the populace,

The winter months are a quiet time for the Oakenwald office. I hope that everyone had a good holiday, and that it continues through the year.

I am opening the office for applications to be my replacement. If you are interested, please contact the Central regional herald at [email protected].

Unto the Barony of the Steppes doth Abd al-Mahdi Jamal ibn Hakim, Rapier

Marshal of the Steppes sends greeting,

Queen’s Champion Tournament took place this month, miles from home, but

enthusiastically attended by a host of rapier combatants. The barony was

represented by five participants ranging from several Masters of Defense and

White Scarves to a cadet who comported herself with honor. Thanks to all who

    help support Her Majesty Ansteorra.

Steppes rapier practices over the past month continue being an adventure. Our

lighting issues have become a thing of the past. With the help of Ld. Sean

Tabor, we have now secured a key to the park lights. Now we will be able to

practice with sufficient lighting for the entirety of practice.

Unfortunately, we continue to be affected by the irregularity of Texas autumns.

An arctic wave dropped temperatures to ranges that were not conducive to safe

and enjoyable conditions for two weeks of the month. However, on those

occasions when we were able to practice, eight to ten participants joined in

    drills and sparring.

Thank go out to my deputies Ld. Sean Tabor and Ld. Llewelyn Brydydd Mir.

Their commitment to helping others during rapier practice makes this job all

    the easier.

My “Weirdly-Related-Shout-Out” for this month goes to Don Guyon Dupree,

our former Steppes Champion. He has been kind enough to offer me a ride to

this year’s Queen’s Champions Tournament. This type of effort may not seem

all that important, but this gesture harkens back to the days when it was

commonplace for SCA members to offer opportunities to friends and

acquaintances to enjoy events by providing the means to attend.

Thanks again to all who continue to support rapier combat in the Barony.

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood knights marshal!

An early season cold snap in November forced us to cancel two of our

practices. Many thanks to those that have stepped up and taught. We are

well into tournament season and we are spending a lot of time on one-on

-ones. I am still in the process of trying to get a monthly armor

workshop together over at makers space. If you are interested in helping

    out, please let me know.

As I enter my second year in office, I am looking to the future, so I am

trying to identify some deputies. If you are interested let me know. You

do not have to be a fighter to be a marshal.

    Greetings Steppes!

Both practices this month were a beautiful, grand 'ol time! We had 10

archers at the 1st Sunday practice and four at the 3rd Sunday practice.

Practices are each 1st and 3rd Sunday at 601 Gross Rd, Mesquite, TX

    75149 from 2p.m. until ~5p.m.

Loaner bows and arrows are available. Range provides water, but I highly

recommend bringing your own preferred form of electrolyte drink/

    mix.

Remember to check-in at the office when you arrive so they can get a

head count. Also, anyone that has not signed a waiver with the facility

during a previous practice will need to, so please bring a photo ID.

Greetings Steppers! First of all I want to thank Lady Elionora for stepping up to be my deputy! She will be handling the A&S schedule and meetings the months I will not be available. I'm sure she will do an awesome job! November passed in a flash! I can't believe we are only one A&S meeting away from New Year. This month our regular A&S meeting was shared with business meeting, but we still got charters done and delivered to all our wonderful illuminators! If you want charters to paint, or have charters ready to be delivered, send me a message and we can coordinate pick up. This way no one who wants to paint is left wanting. This coming December we have a very Exciting class! Mistress Katherine Cunningham has offered to teach a class on canvas banner painting that is going to be held on December 8 at the Dallas Makerspace! If you have ever wanted a sturdy banner for your encampment or table this is your chance to learn how to make them! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach me either through this email or through Facebook. • Greetings and Salutations to the Great Barony of the Steppes!

The Annual Inventory of the Baronial storage unit took place on Sunday, October 27th. Many thanks to all who showed up and assisted with the cleaning out and inventory of goods, especially Lady Esme', our fearless Seneschal and (dead) rat-catcher! At the November Business meeting, the 13 officer's banners were passed out and photos taken. The new rectangular pavilion top was also received from Panther Primitives and it was christened "Belle". A large Rubbermaid box was purchased for our new Belle. The Financial Committee moved and approved a motion to have the old "Beauty" (aka the Crone) taken apart and turned into a large full achievement banner. Beast is still the Beast and will be used the same. Belle will have the full achievement painted on it sometime after the first of the year. Fortunately, Mistress Honour still has the pattern for the achievement that she made for Beauty. The Financial Committee discussed, voted, and approved adding the Steppes European Dance Champions, Myfanwy and Tuathal, to the list of comps for 12 Night. There was a motion to give the 3 Round Archery Bats in storage to the Shire of Rosenfeld as they have not been used by Steppes in several years. The motion was seconded, voted upon, and approved. Master Duncan Hepburn is still our acting Quartermaster as the one application for the position was withdrawn. The position is still open for applications. If you would like more information about this position, please speak with either Master Duncan or myself. And many, many thanks to Master Duncan for his willingness to help with this office. Thorin will be stepping down from the At-Large member position of Financial Committee as of January. Many thanks to Thorin for his service to the barony these past few years. Applications will be taken until the December business meeting for this position. You must be a paid member to apply and will need to take the Exchequer's Financial Policy class at the next possible Round Table or King's College or have taken it within the past year. The committee meets once a month at the end of Business Meetings and also for a specific purpose or emergency action. Items can also be discussed by electronic communications. Please send your application to myself, the Seneschal, and Their Excellencies. Applications shall be considered and voted on by the populace at the December Business meeting. In Service to Crown and Kingdom, Mistress Xene Theriane, OL, OP, etc.

Greetings Steppes! I’m looking for a deputy Chronicler at this time, perhaps someone to fill my shoes next summer when my tenure is up. Current responsibilities would be to provide edits and general familiarization with the newsletter format and rules. Please email me if you have an interest in providing a behind the scenes, but exceptionally important, service to this great barony! As always, a friendly reminder that any new content for the newsletter must be submitted by the 15th of the month and any regular content by the 20th of the month.

Greetings Steppes and Glaslyn, Sometimes there are some really fun things to do as Hospitaler. One of those things happened on the 9th. The Lonestar Council of the Boy Scouts were having a jamboree at the Texas Speedway in Fort Worth. I was invited by Central Region to help with the demo. I had all my Hospitaler info and I had my loom there, warping it. We had hundreds of kids, parents, and leaders come by throughout the day. They were all interested in the SCA. Of course it helped that the table next to mine had lots of weapons on display. Also we had the list field set up right across from us. The fighting was a big draw and between rounds the fighters were talking with the kids, letting them try on chain mail and helmets. They were all in the Elfsea area, but it was still a worthwhile experience. In Service Johanna Jakobsdottir Hospitaler Barony of The Steppes

The Steppes Bowyer and Fletchers Guild is the oldest archery guild within Ansteorra

that we know of surviving even the later established now defunct kingdom's

archery guild. The Guild exists to share knowledge between members and instruct

others how to accomplish all the projects, skills, and items required to round out

personal kits for our SCA archery community. We have recently included thrown

weapons and siege weapons to our instructional activities since the kingdom has

combined all airborne missile activities together.

Guild meetings are a bit sporadic at the moment but ideally we will meet on the

last Friday of the month at a guild members’ home. If you want to know when the

next meeting is, please contact either HL Ironwyrm or the archery marshal who will

then put you in contact with him. [email protected]

  • Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse I swear, there are times when you can have a pretty good idea of whether you’re going to like (or dislike) a movie just by looking at the title. For example, if a movie title starts with a particular kind of word (for example, “Deathstalker,” or “Barbarian”) and ends with a number, you can be pretty sure that it’s not ever going to be on your list of “Best Movies of All Time.” To cite just two examples which have been reviewed before: Deathstalker II was one of the worst movies I’ve ever had the “pleasure” to review; and Barbarian Queen II: The Empress Strikes Back, well, I was always told that “if you can’t find anything nice to say, you should not say anything,” so I’ll just go ahead and stay silent about it. This time. (You can ask me later, if you just can’t live without knowing Da’ud Bob’s opinion!) Well, this month’s movie is no different. This 2015 flick’s title begins with “Dragon” and ends with “3,” so you know it’s problematical right off the bat. And the fact that it went straight to video is another huge clue. But there it was, just calling out for my attention of a Saturday evening, and I did not have the strength to resist. (Well, our motto is, after all, “We watch ‘em so you don’t have to.”) And so it is that this month, Da’ud Bob reviews for you Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse. Starring Ben Kingsley as the voice of the dragon Drago, Julian Morris as the squire Gareth, Tamzin Merchant as Rhonu, Jassa Ahluwalia as Lorne, Jonjo O'Neill as Brude, Jake Curran as Traevor, Dominic Mafham as Sir Horsa, Christopher Fairbank as the Potter, Ozama Oancea as Begilda, Harry Lister Smith as Kalin, Daniel Everitt-Lock as Cuthbert, and Serban Celea as Sir Wulfric, the synopsis for this movie was “When aspiring knight Gareth goes in search of a fallen comet rumored to contain gold, he is shocked to instead find a set of dragon eggs guarded by the dragon Drago. After Drago saves Gareth's life the two become intricately bonded, and must work together to defeat an evil sorcerer and stop his reign of terror. Along the way, Gareth learns the true meaning of being a knight in this fantasy action-adventure. Classical elements make this medieval epic one for the (middle) ages.” Yeah, sure, let’s go with that. Good points: The wagon, with its solid wheels. The CGI dragon was pretty well done (most of the time). The movie is only 97 minutes long. Bad points: The costumes, and pavilion, are from an odd mix of periods, few of them being contemporary with the time of the setting for this movie. Bullying the peasants, merchants, and artisans for protection money. Calling Merlin, of King Arthur fame, “the first Druid.” The use of the phrase “knight in shining armor” in a time before plate armor (although a few pieces do show up in the movie) is entirely anachronistic. Sharpening a sword with a rock. Rhonu’s green makeup vine-like facial “tattoos.” The plot is a bit disjointed, with too many bits and pieces to fit together truly well into a single narrative. Indeed, the whole thing comes across more like an adolescent fantasy tale than a serious movie with a compelling plotline and fully-developed characters. Zero breasts. One gallon of blood. 46 dead bodies. Magical fire fu. Wooden stick fu. Sword fu. Arrow fu. Flaming breath fu. Sickle fu. Dagger fu. Broken arrow fu. Gareth rolls. Horses roll. Gratuitous Stonehenge-style stone circle in medieval Scotland. Gratuitous (post-Roman) Druids. Gratuitous meteor. Gratuitous flash powder. Gratuitous hung men. Gratuitous eye patch. Gratuitous exploding dragon egg. A 52 on the Vomit Meter. 1½ stars. Da’ud Bob says, “Remember, if the title begins with ‘Dragon’ (or ‘Deathstalker,’ or ‘Barbarian,’ or some similar word) and ends with a number, beware! You have been warned, and have only yourself to blame if you watch it. Check it out!”
