We build on His Word. So, we began in January, spending time with Jonah—seeing our stories as similar to Jo-nah’s. During the Lenten season, we will get involved in the “Red Letter Chal-lenge”—which will challenge you as we read and listen to Jesus’ words in the Scriptures. Maybe, you have a “red let-ter” edition of the Bible—with Jesus’ words in red. It’s cool (to me) that the red ink appears in Acts, Second Corinthi-ans and Revelation when Jesus’ words are recorded as well. themselves. Be-ginning that June, we will do something I have not done before. Each sermon—whether on a Sunday or a mid-week Advent, Christmas Eve/Day, Lenten or Holy Week—will focus on the message of a

book of the Bible. We will “read” through the Bible during our worship services. Let’s see what the LORD builds among us as we spend time in His Word! Joy in the journey! Pastor Jeff Shearier

This is always a busy and exciting time for Forest Hills! It’s busy with so many great events taking place, including the Lutheran Elementary Schools Tourna-ment (LEST) at Concordia, Portland in mid-February. Our students are work-ing hard learning music, practicing skills, and even programming their lego robots so they can compete in the tournament. It’s a joy when we can get together with other Lutheran schools, and LEST is always a high-light! It’s also an exciting time of year be-cause there’s a buzz right now about next school year! We are in our enroll-ment window and are seeing most of our students returning. Additionally, we are getting applications and tours al-

most daily right now. People are hear-ing about our school and wanting to come. We are incredibly grateful to God for this as it provides us more opportuni-ties to share the Gospel message.

One thing that real-ly touched my heart this month was when our Mid-dle School Praise Team had the chance to lead our entire school com-munity in praise and worship music. We had a concert in the gym, and the team opened this concert with wor-ship. It was incred-

ible to hear the entire community at For-est Hills – parents and students alike – singing songs like “Oceans” and “Revelation Song” together. I continue to thank God for our partner-ship in the Gospel!

www.blcfamily.org 4 [email protected] www.blpaloha.com [email protected]

Dear Bethlehem, Sunday my phone went off at first ser-vice letting me know I had Sunday school teachers that couldn’t make it and adjust-

ments to be made. God made a way for that to be fixed easily thanks to Katie Quick and Joanna Stiteler step-ping up to take more older kids in their class. Then at second service my phone went off again- and kept go-ing. I fought temptation to check until in a glance I learned Kobe Bryant had passed away in a helicopter crash. This didn’t make sense. Do we stop services to pray? What do we pray for? It didn’t seem real so I kept my thoughts to myself. As a long time Blazer fan, and knowing Kobe’s legal history, I’ve never been a fan of his. But it still hit hard. Just doesn’t seem right. I later learned why- the NBA really didn’t start going until the 1950’s so only 3 NBA MVP’s have died- Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, and now Kobe and he was only 41. They’re healthy guys so they live long. I think that’s part of it- the other is in December one of my friend’s fa-ther figures Griff, passed away, just a week ago Paul Maier passed away, and a lot unresolved emotions from that all came together. Then to hear that Kobe’s daughter passed away too and all the images of Kobe raising his kids and loving being a girl dad- I still don’t really like him as a player- but as now a role model for being a girl dad

and learning about his faith in Jesus- I love that about him and grieve for him. The quickest response that gave some perspective to me was this scripture from James 4:13-14, “Come now you who say, today or tomorrow we will go into such and such town… and trade and make a profit. Yet you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” We forget too much that this life is tempo-rary. Yes there’s the knowledge of the eternal life to come, but that doesn’t mean we take this life for granted. I’ve cried more over this and other is-sues closer to home facing Bethlehem in the last month than I have in years. I’ve probably needed it. It’s ok to put your guard down and feel what you feel even it’s over a guy who played a silly game for a living you’ve never met. Part of it is seeing so many in the me-dia crying over it too. Shaq’s tribute to him- seeming to tearfully admit he had-n’t talked to his teammate in years re-minded me of how much we need to not take people nor time for grant-ed. Shaq said should spend less time at work and more time talking to the people he loves- is a huge reminder to me of what my ministry and our lives are supposed to be about. Are their much bigger things in the world than Kobe’s death? Yeah. But if something touches you-take a moment to learn from it. Pray for the families of all 9- baseball coach and U of O alum

Trivia night: The youth ministry’s only fundraiser is March 7th! First, invite your friends to join! Secondly, we need donations for our auction.. You never know what you get until you ask! If your youth can make a craft or can go in with another kid or sibling on a service like babysitting or yardwork that would be awesome! Youth parents are responsible for the wine wall- so start collecting wine. Third, we are in need of adult help in our kitchen from 4:30-6:30pm on trivia night with plating and we need at least one more person to help with dishes– we will train you! We’d also like two or three families to help with clean up that’s around 9:30-10:30pm or so. Let me know if any of those works for you!

The One Gathering High Schoolers! We're going to the one Gathering July 7-13th with other NW Lutheran high school youth ministries. We will serve Boise during the day- and be entertained by comedians, illusion-ists, and musicians who share about their faith influences their talent at night. Cost is $225 for the week you can pay it all now- or pay first deposit of $100 by Feb. 9th, and final deposit of $125 by May 3rd. Refunds are only given if you're able to get another child of the same gender. You can pay with a credit card online at

For those in entering 6th through 9th grade this fall-we will get outside, ditch the devic-es, go to a lake in the mountains of Idaho, surrounded by people of strong faith, hear God’s voice, and sing praise to His name up at Camp Perkins!

Cost is a total of $225. First payment is due Feb. 9th of $100. Second payment

is due May 3rd of $125. More info here: http://campperkins.org/ Later you can add white water rafting or horseback riding for an additional charge.Let me know if you got questions!

John Altobelli, his wife, Keri, and their basketball-playing daughter Alyssa; mother and daughter Sarah and Payton Chester; Mamba Academy basketball coach Christina Mauser; and especially the family of the pilot Ara Zobayan. Then pick up the phone and call those people you love who haven’t talked to in a year or too. Look for opportunities to share the gospel and the hope you have in Christ, even in the face of death with those who grieve this and so many oth-er things. Death is not the final answer for us who hope in the Lord. Yet this life is short. Make it count! God bless, Eric Oswald DCE

Of course, these events would not have succeeded or been so joyful without the help of our donors and volunteers. A Special shout out to those who took time a week before Christmas to deliver food and holiday cheer to our neighbors in need, to our quilters who donated dozens of warm quits; and our blood donors who arrived in exceptional numbers. We thank you all. We also can’t help but feel the Holy Spirit at work in inspiring your generosity and a caring, and motivating our donors and volunteers. Praise the Lord!

February Service Team Notes:

With preparations underway for Trivia Night, there are no scheduled Service Team Events for February. If folks have Ideas on activities they would like to see us do for Lent or beyond, we would love to hear from you. February’s Service Team Notes are about thanks and praise. We capped off a successful holiday season with a bountiful food drive and Christmas food box program serving 25 families and resulted in an additional 400 pounds of food being donated to the Oregon Food Bank. We delivered a carload of Quilts, blankets and sleeping bags to the Union Gospel Mission just after the New Year

in time to help beat the threat of snow. Mission personnel were thrilled to receive so many quilts which brought back memories of home and a feeling of hope and caring. Finally, in January we hosted the Red Cross for a blood drive where we exceeded our goal by over ten percent, with the Red Cross Crediting our drive for saving up to 78 lives.

Bethlehem's Servant of the Month for February is Laurie Siewert. Laurie gives much of her heart and time in service to our God at Bethelehem. Laurie is part of our LWML and our Altar Guild. She has served on and led both of these groups for many years, and continues to raise up new leaders. Every Monday morning, Laurie can be found with our quilter group, working hard to make beautiful quilts to sell and

donate. She has even made some spe-cial quilted banners that we use in the Narthex. Watch for her "stained glass" banner to be displayed again on Easter! Laurie, we praise God for your heart of service, for your eyes of details, and for your wonderful joyful laughter. You are a gift to us, dear sister!
