What is R.A.P.?Research Advisory Panel -- this is an internal group comprised of orthopedic surgeons and other staff members from different areas of the hospital.

Why do we have R.A.P.?Its purpose is to ensure that research done at Scottish Rite Hospital has scientific merit, adheres to the mission of the hospital and protects the safety and privacy of patients and their families.

When was R.A.P. started?Although it was officially formed in 2001, the Research Review Committee (a larger group of staff members) had been monitoring research studies since the creation of the Research program in the late 1980s. Carol Wise, Ph.D., was the first R.A.P. chair, followed by Mikhail Samchukov (2004-2015). The current R.A.P. chair is Jeff Black, M.D. The hospital would like to thank Carol Wise, Ph.D., and Mikhail Samchukov for their leadership while serving on R.A.P. and helping improve the quality of Research at the hospital.

How many members are part of R.A.P.?11 active members, including: Jeff Black, M.D. (Chair); Kirsten Tulchin-Francis, Ph.D. (Vice Chair); John Birch, M.D.; Adriana De La Rocha, Ph.D.; Mauricio Delgado, M.D.; Shane Miller, M.D.; Nandina Paria, Ph.D.; David Podeszwa, M.D.; Brandon Ramo, M.D.; Heather Richard, Psych.D.; and Lane Wimberley, M.D.

Recently, the hospital celebrated a graduation ceremony for those who completed the Advanced Practice Providers (APP) Fellowship. The APP Fellowship is a combined program between Scottish Rite Hospital and Children’s Health for pediatric orthopedic Advanced Practice Providers. This is a training program that involves clinical teaching in various areas, including general pediatric orthopedics, trauma, infection and sports medicine. Online training is also included, where graduates are required to watch lectures on various topics.

Program director David Podeszwa, M.D., looks forward to this fellowship reaching beyond Scottish Rite Hospital and Children’s Health. “It is a great educational program for all APP’s who want to further their training in pediatric orthopedics,” says Podeszwa. All pediatric advanced practice providers, at both Scottish Rite Hospital and Children’s Health, train with our orthopedic physicians in this program. Congratulations to the graduates!
