Core of Community Acts 2:43-47
With you as the nucleus
Of every group that gathers,
Differences are respected
And tensions are overcome.
Those speaking from the edge
Gain a listening ear.
Compassion thrives.
Egos maintain a low profile.
With you as Core of Community
Peace abides and love abounds.
Today: The Core of Community
affects my relationships.

Prayers for the family and friends of Betty
McFall. Betty, a long-time member of St. Paul’s, passed away on May 21. She will be fondly remembered for her volunteer contributions, generosity of spirit and love of nature and animals. A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, June 8, at 10 am at Parkview Community League, 9135 - 146 Street.
St. Paul's has been selected as one of 21 sites for the 19th Annual Eco-Solar Home Tour on June 3.
It is an open house style tour of homes and businesses that display practical and timely examples of sustainability, including renewable energy, water efficiency, emission technologies and natural landscaping.
We are proud that our church took the leap to go solar - it says a lot about what we are committed to as a community and is an example that other community buildings and churches can follow. All money came from grants and dedicated donations, so the project is already revenue positive and will significantly green the grid.
Save these dates:
June 10 - St. Paul’s Legacy project update: schematic drawings, cost estimates, Q&A with consultants over lunch
June 17 - congregational meeting for vote on our Legacy Project followed by spring BBQ
June 24 - St. Paul’s Foundation Annual General Meeting after worship
any thanks to those who came out and helped out with last Sunday’s Mission and Service fundraiser. Thanks to you, we had a lively, informative discussion and raised over $1,000 for the M&S Fund, which makes a difference in the lives of people in Edmonton, across Canada and around the world.

The Gilchrist Tea
What’s in a name? On a beautiful Sunday morning in June 1970, I urged my four children on as they started breakfast. “Why do we have to hurry?” asked my son Geoff, who was missing his working dad. “Because Dr. Gilchrist from Angola is coming to St. Paul’s to speak, and Mommy and all the leaders and girls are responsible for the tea we are having after the service to honour him,” Susan, my excited CGIT daughter, answered gleefully. “But Mommy, what if he doesn’t come?” my bored ten-year-old Geoff persisted. “Geoff, just eat. He’ll come. We HAVE to be there EARLY,” my young, sophisticated Susan countered.
I shall never forget that morning. The Rev. Ian MacMillan met us outside the main doors. “My Halferdahl friends, thanks for coming early. I have some very horrific news. Be brave, kids, and brace yourselves. Dr. Sidney Gilchrist, his wife Frankie and daughter Betty were all killed on their way to Edmonton.” We were in disbelief. I hugged my children, met with the leaders (two of them, Pat McGeachy and Betty Simmonds, are also still here at St. Paul’s - you may know them.) Then we met with the 70 CGIT girls. When the shock lessened, they decided unanimously to go ahead with the lunch and give the proceeds to Dr. Gilchrist’s hospital in Angola. Thus the tradition started. Since then there has been a Gilchrist Tea after church every June. When CGIT folded, the UCW and then the Congregational Care Committee took it on with the enthusiastic guidance of Isabel Becking who had been a missionary to Angola. All proceeds go
to the Angola Memorial Scholarship
The Gilchrist Tea - June 3
The Gilchrist Tea, the like of which your mother might never have time or energy to whip up, is being held after service June 3. This June, the Congregational Care Committee will lead the way in honouring all our new members at St. Paul’s. Do come and get to know them!
There is no admission fee. Instead, please consider making a donation to the Angola Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please make your cheque out to St. Paul’s United Church, designating “ASF” in the memo line.

Quilting Group News
On June 4th the Quilters will tie their last quilts before breaking for the summer. We will resume in September. Thank you for your continued support with donations of fabric, thread, unfinished sewing projects and gently used sheets. Please keep us in mind when clearing out closets or downsizing! We have several packages of quilt blocks ready for distribution; if you are looking for a simple summer sewing project, arrange pick-up by contacting Donna [email protected] or leaving word at the church office.
Godly Play Supplies
If you’re cleaning out this spring, please keep our church school in mind. I’m looking for natural containers for the Godly Play room: wooden cups/ bowls/ containers for markers and other small supplies, and small, mid and large-sized baskets (wicker or a softer weave). Also, I'm looking for any nice small, wood scraps and for leftover soft or textured wool or fabric scraps - things that are appealing to the senses! Thanks. Rondy
