EHA Foundation Takes Leadership Role On The Hill

Kinhaven’s Capital Campaign Continues

Kinhaven is extremely fortunate to count the EHA Foundation among its loyal friends. This winter, we received a grant of $50,000 from EHA to be used toward completing the residential quad in the boys’ housing area. When sufficient additional funds are in hand, Kinhaven will break ground to construct a second double cabin for boys, thereby completing the replacement and renovation of all the residential spaces on both the Hill and the Knoll.

Kinhaven’s campus – both the buildings and the grounds – have always captured the spirit of the Kinhaven experience. They are rustic but safe, attractive but simple. These qualities are important to all of us – alumni, friends, faculty and current students. And these qualities are important to the EHA Foundation as well. In this spirit, EHA has funded several important projects in the past: a cabin for girls on the Knoll, the renovation of Da Vinci (the art shack) and last year’s rebuilding of the Garden House. We thank EHA for its continued generosity and for its commitment to Kinhaven’s strong future.

Gifts from foundations are important to our Capital Campaign, but so are gifts from individuals. No gift is too small. And, needless to say, no gift is too large! To date, Kinhaven’s Capital Campaign has raised over $1 million. A stroll around campus will show the results of the generous gifts we have received from so many people. However, we are not yet done. Please join us by helping to raise the funds necessary to complete our major rebuilding project on the Hill. Thank you!

In Memoriam: Mildred Ellen Orton

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Mildred Ellen Orton.

Mildred Ellen was an alumna, member of the board and supporter of Kinhaven and a co-founder of The Vermont Country Store, the famous “purveyors of the practical and hard to find.”

Kinhaven was fortunate to be able to honor Mildred Ellen in a ceremony on campus last summer and to acknowledge the many ways she has contributed to the school over the years. She was 99 years old.

Lark Quartet ConcertBenefits Kinhaven Capital Campaign

By Adam Grabois, Board President'Cellist, 1978-'80; Trustee '05-'10

On April 19th, 2010, Kinhaven presented a concert of the Lark Quartet in the beautiful home of June Wu (ACMW ’08) on the upper west side in New York City. Several years ago, Kinhaven inaugurated a concert series to benefit our Capital Campaign. We are grateful to the many wonderful artists who have donated their services over the years and also to the gracious and generous hosts who have opened their homes to alumni, friends and students. April’s program featured works by Mendelssohn (Four Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 81), Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon (An Exaltation of Larks) and William Bolcom (Three Rags for String Quartet). Each piece brought down the house. The members of the quartet are Deborah Buck and Harumi Rhodes, violin, Kathryn

Lockwood, viola and Caroline Stinson, violoncello. Deb-bie Buck has been on the Kinhaven violin faculty for ten years and her remarks before the concert spoke to the deep emotional connection we all feel with Kinhaven, the nurturing quality of the place, the exceptional faculty and the outstanding students. It was clear that these thoughts resonated with everyone in the room. June Wu hosted our very first benefit concert back in 2006. A wonderful pianist herself, she has since attended Kinhaven’s Chamber Music Workshop. We are grateful to June, along with our many enthusiastic concert-goers, for her deep and abiding interest in Kinhaven’s future. Everyone was delighted to hear the performance and also to be able to do something lasting and significant for Kinhaven. We were particularily fortunate to have the concerts in Dr. Wu's beautiful apartment overlooking the New York skyline. More concerts in the series are being planned. If you would like to attend or host such an event, please be in touch with our office.

ALUMNI NOTES SPRING, 2010

Ben Riggs S’58-59 violin: It’s great to see that Kinhaven continues. For some reason, music seems to be out of many school curricu-lums, so my grandchildren (ages 6 & 8) are taking piano and guitar privately. I don’t want them to miss the experience. My wife Lee and I are enjoying a kind of semi-retirement in Newport, Rhode Island that gives us more time for doing what we want. Although I was originally a violinist, I have felt for many years I should have pursued piano, so now I’m setting aside time to do it. Since Lee has had some success composing (by ear) for television, I am going to start with her method and work from there.

Anne Bergstrom S’64-68 flute: It was fun to see 2 fellow alums in the summer of ‘08 – Josh Mostel, on Monhegan Island, Maine, and Peggy Pearson, who came to PEI to play an oboe concerto. I have moved back to Halifax NS, and I teach music to grade 4, 5, & 6 students, and teach flute privately. I play classical flute, and especially enjoy playing Irish tunes at my local pub session every week on my keyless wooden flute. Who knew one could learn to play by ear so late in life? I study every summer at Boxwood Fes-tival in Lunenburg, where teachers come from Ireland who don’t read the “dots” at all.

Ruth E. (Cole) Chodrow, V.M.D. S’66-67 clarinet/guitar: After 5 years on the job, I resigned as manager of the local veterinary emergency clinic. I wanted to stop working evenings and weekends, and have more time for music. I’m still teaching part-time in the biology department at James Madison University, and still running my pet housecall practice. I play in 2 early music groups and have discovered, late in life, a fondness for the bass recorder. Son Philip is a sophomore at Swarthmore College who enjoys an eclectic range of music but has no interest in making any. Still, it’s fun listening to his latest finds. The greatest pleasure is still playing music with other good people—I learned that at Kinhaven.

Francesca Contino Levitt S’67-68 violin: I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy receiving The Spirit of Kinhaven newsletter. It brings back such great memories of my childhood summers spent at camp with my dad Joseph Contino (S’67-84 staff, Chamber Music Workshop ’95-99 staff) My sister Adriana (S’67-70 cello) and brother Rick (S’67 trumpet) also spent summers there. My sister is a professional cellist and teaches in Freiburg, Germany. Kinhaven was a big part of my dad’s life and he loved spending time teaching and coaching there. I hope this finds you well. Thanks for continuing the traditions of such an awesome place.

Christine Ausnit Hood S’74 viola: Byron (J’02-04 trumpet) is now a freshman at Harvard! I’m still playing viola, currently working on duos by Mozart, Pleyel, and Handel-Halverson.

Matthew Brubeck S-74-78 cello (news via parents): Matthew lives near Toronto and is performing with several groups who appeared at various Canadian festivals last year. He is working toward his Ph.D. in music at York University in Toronto, and is also teaching there and 2 other music schools—U. of Toronto and Humber College. He performed with his brothers at the Kennedy Center Honors.

John Feaver S’74-77 staff: It has been years since I’ve written, but I always devour the Kinhaven newsletters, glad to dip mentally into happy memories of that wonderful place and people. Besides playing keyboard and violin (not at the same time!) in our church, this year has been a first for me: writing and arranging songs for a new musical based on the O Henry short story The Gift of the Magi. It’s been lots of fun to hear the songs coming from others’ mouths. My warm greetings to Nancy and Jerry and all my Kinhaven friends from ’74-77.

James Harding S’78-81 clarinet: In San Francisco, I bumped into ex-camper Nate Reit (J’97-00 tuba, S’02-05 trombone, J’06-08 staff, S’08-09 staff) because he was wearing a spanking new Kinhaven T-shirt (you don’t see many of those in San Francisco). Now his girlfriend, Morgan Nilsen (S’00-02 clarinet, S’08-09 staff) is working with me at my school. Also in West Coast Kinhaven news, Ariella Hyman (S’81-82 cello) turned up at my school this year as the parent of her spectacular boys Eyton and Gabriel Schil-linger-Hyman. Could a madrigal singing party in San Francisco be far in the future?

Alumni Notes (Continued from Page 3)

Anne Shybunko-Moore S’86 flute: My summer at Kinhaven will always hold special memories. I now have 4 sons (ages 8, 6, 5, and almost 2 years) and am watching them initiate their own love for music. I recently took them to visit Kinhaven and was reminded of the people and the times spent there. Thanks for the memories – would love to hear from my Fugue-mates and other friends. I am living on Long Island, and own a defense manufacturing company. My husband Jamie and I are enjoying the fun of raising 4 boys!

Shauna Dobbins Womeldorff S’87-88 violin: I just got married in August 2009 with a wedding in Las Vegas and reside in Chicago. Here, I am the head of the Costume Department at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. I have been working in theatre for about 15 years in various theatres, mostly on the East Coast. I still play violin, but only recreationally now. I fondly remember the summers at Kinhaven and hope to visit there again one day.

Peter Charig S’91-92 trombone, S’96 staff: Greetings! Things are well with me. I’m living in Boston, married, working for the Boston Early Music Festival, and freelancing. I’ve told my wife many, many stories about Kinhaven, and we even managed to sneak on to campus last winter, when we happened to be in the area. I’m hoping and planning a more involved visit with her this summer! My love and well wishes to everyone (and a special hello to Tony Mazzocchi (S’97, 99 ,00-01, 03-09 staff), that rascal!)

Meredith Cooper Mascolo S’91-92 violin: Meredith gave birth to her son, Cooper Gray Mascolo, in December. She works at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts as the Assistant Director of On-line Programs and plays violin in the band Dave Aaronoff and the Protagonists (www.daveaaronoff.com/albums/daprotagonists/), as well as other local groups/projects.

Carolyn Landis Kunicki J’92-93, S’94-97 horn: Carolyn is still a member of the Colorado Symphony and got the opportunity to play with the Saint Louis Symphony for two seasons.

Jennifer Kim S’96-97 piano, S’02 staff: Thank you for your contin-ued support of this wonderful institution and for all you do to help us understand the value of kinship and music. Kinhaven continues to hold a very special place in my heart, and I’m very grateful. I’m currently living and working in California at a Buddhist retreat center, learning about meditation, ethics, and happiness from the Buddhist point of view. The experience has been eye-opening, challenging and hopefully fruitful. I send my love and sincere wishes for a happy, healthy 2010!

Benjamin Larsen J’98-99 cello: I graduated from Manhattan School of Music in May, 2009, with a Bachelor’s degree in Cello Performance. I’m currently a first-year Master’s student there, studying with Clive Greensmith. I’m also a member of Salome Chamber Orchestra and the cellist of the Lorelei Piano Trio (www.loreleipianotrio.com).

Camille White J’98-99, S’00-01 oboe: I studied at the New England Conservatory and Curtis and now I am playing in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in beautiful New Zealand with

partner Carl. I miss the bliss of summers in Vermont. So many good memories of my friends and teachers from Kinhaven. I will come back and visit some day but in the mean time I’d love to hear from you: [email protected].

Ric Becker S’01-03 trombone: Still playing trombone!! Almost making a living at it – doing a little part time work for a friend’s non-profit, but playing music all the time! I’m working right now on getting my own group off the ground, and playing with a lot of other people, too.

Gina Leija S’05 flute, J’06-07 staff: After Kinhaven, I attended the Eastman School of Music as a flute performance major in the studio of Bonita Boyd. I recently won a position as a flutist with the United States Army Field Band. I am so thrilled to begin my career with this fantastic group!

Gabrielle Kramer S’07 violin: will be attending Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance with Honours. She has been accepted into Jacqueline Ross’ studio.

The Kinhaven Annual Fund

During this intense period of economic recession, more than the usual number of Kinhaven parents have needed financial aid to enable their children to attend Kinhaven. Since the Annual Fund is the main source of financial aid, we were extremely fortunate last year that the Kinhaven community responded to our urgent appeal and contributed in excess of the prior year’s amount.

Contributions to the Annual Fund this year are running strong, but we are still short of our target. If you haven’t given already, please, please consider a generous gift to the Annual Fund. We all Thank You for any help you can give.

Kinhaven's Barn is still RED!Come see it and visit us this summer.
