WHEN SCHOOL FIRST STARTS…
• Students are very nervous• hear rumors on how challenging college is
• Are not familiar with the new environment•Worried about finding their classes
• have new peers•New friends, social clique, teammates, classmates• Personal ex. Softball team were my first friends
• Are not used to living on their own•Use to parents doing everything for them• Ex. Laundry, waking them up for school, cooking, ect.
HOW STUDENTS GET INVOLVED IN CAMPUS LIFE…• Work study•make money, while involved in social environment• Personal ex: work for all athletics teams
• Sorority clubs• To form a brother/sister hood (core group of friends)
• Sport teams• To stay active/fit, play the sport you love• Personal ex: softball
• Clubs and Activities• To Stay involved, pick up a steady role•S.U.B- decide activities for students
EXPECTED CLASSROOM BEHAVIORS…
• Important to study for tests/quizzes•Cover many chapters for one test/quiz
• Gain a relationship with the professor•More helpful
• Important to look over notes•A lot of material in such little time to learn it
• Focusing in class•Getting enough sleep, eating enough nutrition
• Time management•Balance work, school, and sports
POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF DRINKING…
• Fail out or discontinue college• Partying becomes biggest priority
• Miss/ be late to class
• Show up to class not engaged•Homework not completed
• Show up to class sick•Hungover
THE INFLUENCE OF PARTYING
• Stressed about school/sports•Bad grades, no playing time
• Big universities• Tailgating for sporting events
• To meet new friends• Fit in with the social crowd
• Small campus• There’s nothing else to do
THE DIRECT EFFECTS OF DRINKING ON CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
• Inability to take part in class discussions/assignments
• Sleeping in class• No comprehension
of the issues/topics being discussed

• Miss out on additional information given by professor
• Possible exclusion from class
• Inability to grasp concepts relating to subject matter
THINGS TO REMEMBER…• It is ok to drink as long as your age appropriate
• Don’t let partying be your #1 priority
• Remember to always fit studying in
• Choose friends wisely• Not friends that encourage you to party all the time
• A part of college life is social interactions•While studying remember to build social networks
• Be safe• Don’t set your drink down• Take a drink from someone you don’t know
