Jake calls this time of year "workshop season". Truth is, if we don't spend workshop season in the workshop, we won't have airplanes ready for the "Flying Season" that starts, you know, in April.

We had a great Christmas party with Chapter 26. Food, friends, airplanes, and the annual gift exchange. I think I won the grand prize, because of a late challenge call. The referees con-ferred with the rule book and it was done. So sorry my imaginary friend Jake couldn't be there. Rochelle from Chapter 26 still thinks I have an imag-inary friend named Jake. Roger was able to make it despite his less than graceful mobility. A good time was had by all.

Don't get depressed. Get into the workshop while you can so we can be ready to fly in the spring.

Stay safe.

This week was trim tab time. I figured I could knock them out in a few hours....right... Anyway they are getting close to being ready to "glue" up and then riv-et. I skipped a few steps on the elevators because the next step for them is to glue (proseal) some foam spacers in place and I wanted to do the prosealing all at one time.

I did get to do a little flying the weekend. Jeff and I went out Friday afternoon and just looped

the Puget Sound. Then on Satur-day we met up with Martin and went to Jefferson County airport for a little breakfast.

More Elevator time

Yep, this week I spent most of my free time on the 10. The ele-vators seem to be taking forever but slowly they are coming to-gether. I find that when I reach a point where I stress about a par-ticular step I tend to delay it more than I should. Such is the case here. I have been thinking about how to best rivet the trailing edge where Van's wants a special bucking bar. Well I figured it out and think I found a better solu-tion. I like to use my tungsten bucking bar whenever I can as it seems to make much better shop heads. I used a little gorilla tape and my old metal bolt gauge to come up with an interesting solu-tion that worked very well.

Here is the solution...Notice the bend in the metal plate. That's there to help angle the tungsten bar properly while allowing me to put some leverage on it and not ding the lower skin. One other note of interest, I did elevate the aft spar just about a quarter of an

inch so that the angle was better and the flex on the top skin was less.

And the top rivets are the ones I used the special bucking bar on. I think they came out better than the ones on the bottom that I had to do free hand.

And here they sit at the end of the day on Sunday. Still not done but very close. Just a little more rivet-ing and I can start on the trim tabs.

Last year the starter in the 9A broke just before I was to take one of my IFR lessons. I replaced this starter with a new one and put this one on the shelf thinking I might find another one and between the two make one working starter. I found out that Sky-Tec will rebuild any starter for less than half the price of a new one. I took this picture as I was boxing it up to send back. This will make a nice starter for the 10.

Steve Little Kitfox update

With the advent of winter and volunteering at the Mu-seum of Flight my building has slowed. I’m working on the final fitting of the upper and lower cowling halves. I didn’t like the fit on the fiberglass joints. I epoxied and flush riveted an aluminum edge to the upper cowling that fits over the lower cowl jog in the fiberglass making a straight and strong seam. Final fitting with Poly Fill and sanding is in process.

Next up will be making and fitting the oil filler door followed by installing the windshield. I also need to modify the nose bowl to make the spacing between the cowl and spinner uniform.

Novembers Meeting Minutes

Brian Lee conducted a Bi-Annual flight review for those that wanted to bring their log books and study materials.

This months meeting was the Christmas Party that we celebreated with EAA Chapter 26. It occurred on December 10th and we had great food and a great time with the White Elephant gift exchange. I am sor-ry that we missed you if you could not attend.

Aviation and EAA are one of the few remaining areas in our society where people are friendly and gener-ous with their time and skills to others that need guid-ance or assistance. That is what I like about our Chapter and aviation in general.

Thanks to Steve and Lynda Cryder for getting me and my wheel chair to the Christmas Party and to Dave and Tamera Nason for the ride home. The wheel chair I have is very heavy and would challenge my strength even when I have both legs to stand on. Thank you, it was great to get out of the house and I enjoyed the Christmas Party.

Headwind update:

The progress on the Headwind has been minimal. A small amount of work on the airfoil to get it closer to routing and not much other progress.

responded by replacing the engines with the proven Nakajima Ha-25. Flight tests were promising.

In October 1940, the army ordered continued im-provements such as switching to 805 kW (1,080 hp) Mitsubishi Ha-102 engines. This craft, designated Ki-45 Kai, was complete in September 1941 and was officially adopted for use by the army in February 1942 as the "Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter".

The prototype of a single-seat fighter variant, the Ki-45 II, was also built; development continued under the designation Ki-96.

The Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu (??, "Dragon Slayer") was a two-seat, twin-engine fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. The army gave it the designation "Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter"; the Allied reporting name was "Nick". Design and development

In response to the rapid emergence in Europe of twin-engine heavy fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf 110, the army ordered development of a twin-engine, two-seat fighter in 1937, and assigned the proposal by Kawasaki Shipbuilding the designation of Ki-38. This only went as far as a mock up, but by Decem-ber of that year, the army ordered a working proto-type as the Ki-45, which first flew in January 1939. Results from the test flights, however, did not meet the army's expectations. The Ha-20 Otsu engine was underpowered and failure-prone, while the airframe suffered from nacelle stall. The Ki-45 did not enter service, but the army, in-sistent on having a working twin-engine fighter, or-dered Kawasaki to continue development. Kawasaki
