The Maverick Region was well represented at the
15th annual “First Ever Anywhere,” PCA Club
Race at Pueblo Motorsports Park in Colorado in
September. The Colorado folks are always big
supporters of our race, so it was nice to have a good
showing for theirs. Leslie and Jim Buckley, Rosemary
and Colin Graidage, Bryan Henderson, Bill Miller,
Keith Olcha, and Judy and I were there. Mike Lapp and
Steve Marshall hung out with us and were honorary Mavericks for the
weekend. In what has to be a long distance award for a DE, Pat Benson did
dual duty as a race worker and DE participant.
As you would expect, if you know them, the Colorado guys were great
hosts. The weather got progressively nicer (read cooler) as the weekend
progressed and the track was fast and dry on race day. The track wasn't the
only thing that was fast. In F and G, where most of us ran, locals like Jesse
Wurmbrand,Mike Martin in F and Dave Stribling in G,showed us the way.
Bryan managed podium finishes in both races and Jim in one. Keith led
the way with two wins in C, but even he would tell you the competition in
his class was not that significant. I managed to knock 5 seconds off of my
best lap time from two years ago; but that still left me several seconds
behind Jesse, who set his personal best time on the track during qualifying.
On the whole, it was a fun weekend. Yes, it's a long drive, but the
beautiful scenery, especially in the Texas panhandle, made the miles fly by.
(If you believe that, I need to talk to you about some investment property
I have.)

Whoever it is needs to know that Tom Snodgrass requests the schools
take place later rather than earlier so we don’t have to stand in the snow
during registration. The AX/TT committee is waiting to set their dates
till they hear from the DE and Club Race committee. The DE/CR
committee had sent out a survey asking for date preferences and they
were waiting to talk about it this weekend. Tracey suggested January 20
for the New Member party then that was talked about as to why does it
need to be in January (nothing else is happening) or can it be in Feb or
Mar or combined with Father’s Day.
It’s finally my turn to speak and I’ve finished the cookie. Next month
I will present the board with a list of equipment that I will need to take
over Slipstream since I do not personally have a fully equipped office to
rival any professional’s dream like the Shoffits’ household.
Bill Dawson continued with the scheduling dates thread saying that
we’re getting very good rates from MSR and we’re in competition with
Drivers Edge for the premium dates. Registration for the Oct event is
starting slow and it’s been noted that White and Yellow run groups tend
to fill slower. They feel these drivers wait to watch the weather before
they commit monetarily to the weekend. The committee is discussing
adding a $25 to $50 late fee.
New Advertiser Lady of Steele, Lisa has been talking with Eagle
Canyon on a possible Slipstream Ad. They have contributed towards
the Founder’s Day raffle (You MUST come to take advantage of this
wonderful donation!)
Tracey Gross had a call from Poor Ranch (??) to come do a Happy
Hour. She’ll investigate. She has 23 signed up for Premier Wines of
Plano’s wine tasting and needs 30 to break even, would be even happier
with 40. She reported latest plans for Founder’s Day: dinner on the Palm
Terrace, Hula dancers and pictures. Holiday Party will be at the home of
Bill and Virginia Campbell and Tracey is investigating catering the food
this year instead of the pot luck bring stuff.
Michael Wingfield repeated Bill’s Oct DE entry numbers and that he
had them right other than the 3 latest entries that Bill didn’t know about.
Bill took back the floor to report that he has completed all the reports and
paperwork concerning the incident at September’s event and considers
it settled.
Mark Gluck was concerned, from the VP/Insurance guy position, of
the picture in last month’s Slipstream of some go-karts promoting the
Happy Hour at Speed Zone. He said that PCA insurance does not cover
go-kart events. The upcoming Happy Hour is a social event that will take
place at Speed Zone, after which what people choose to do is up to them.
Rocky discussed the look of the ballots for Founder’s Day
voting wanting the individual proposals listed for a Y/N vote on each
individually. This will eliminate the event of something being blindly
approved/disapproved within a bunch of others. He would also like a
one-line synopsis of each line item.
We discussed continuing the special invitation to our Slipstream
Sponsors and also the 20 year members. Wendy has an idea in mind for
these special invitations. Rocky then asked about moving the November
board meeting ahead one week so it would be in front of Founder’s Day
in case any executive discussion needed to take place days prior to the
event. So please note that Wednesday, November 1, 2006, will be the next
board meeting at Hackberry Creek.
8
When Rocky kindly inquired if I was ready for
him to start the meeting I stuffed in the rest of
the cookie and nodded. Charlie was the first
around the table and he proudly stated that the truxster
has new license plates. He noticed last week they were
6-months out of date.
Teri is looking for a couple more folks interested in
helping run a check point for the MADD rally next weekend. It would
also be nice to have people enter as the money donation is for a great
cause plus it will be a really easy rally.
Teri started a round of End-of-Year Trophy discussions. We
touched on the AX/TT trophies, even though Bryan Bell was not there as
well as the rally trophies. Are trophies accounted for in everybody’s
(anybody’s) budgets? Will Club Race give a trophy again and how about
DE folks and instructors?? Somebody mentioned that Dennis
Chamberlain should get a trophy for the most cocktails at the Happy
Hours. The Selcer trophy was brought up and the fact that there’s a small
“keeper”trophy that goes with it,which Rocky hadn’t known about. What
about the Gregg Murrell award? What about mention of tours? I think
somewhere in there Rocky said he’d contact Andy Miller about the tours
and Lisa will get the standings from Bryan and/or James’ website. Whew~
After a small lull Christy Dominick said the Goodie Store is online
and will get PayPal incorporated to make ordering and paying easier.
She is going to start a “For a Limited Time” feature so she can order and
turn around product quicker.
The full-room-nearly-standing-applause interrupted Denny Payne
mid-sentence when he said he would take over the website. Steve Boyd
is stepping down after several years of fabulous work. We sincerely thank
Steve for designing the Maverick site and getting it up and running. He
has put a ton of invisible man-hours working on it so Denny has some
large shoes to fill, but he’s ready and looking forward to it.
There was a quiet spot so Rocky jumped in with a report for
Keith Chambers saying the response for January Ski Trip has been
astounding……ly non-existent. The information will be put on the
Website with a link. The reason there was a quiet spot is because James
was next and he said he was only there for the food.
Wendy brought us up to date on Lanean’s condition and hospital
stay. For those that are interested in her fight against lung cancer contact
Wendy for the link to the blog she has created just for this. Wendy
reported on the progress made the past several weekends at the Hope
Shelter. Linda Bambina is keeping a spreadsheet list of progress, needs
and wants, and volunteers. Clara Lewis is coordinating the work while at
the shelter. The kids’ play room will be decorated in cars, checker flags
and the German colors of black, red and gold. Individuals, couples
and small grouplets are taking charge of sponsoring the bedrooms;
furnishing and decorating them. Christy and Tracey seconded a move
made by Mark Gluck to donate $3,000 towards these final preparations.
What happened to the “buy a brick”thing that was going on this time last
year. We think it was minimal.
Wendy finished up saying the AX/TT #6 had great participation, the
charity AX is this weekend and Oct Slipstream was going to the mail-
house tomorrow. She’s continually plagued with delays so will start
moving everyone’s deadlines forward. Information on future events is
slim and Wendy was wondering if there was a 2007 Calendar Committee.

Ilost a dear friend this month when Lanean passed
away. Many of you met her and were influenced in
some way by her. For those of you who did not get
the pleasure of meeting her, I hope the article about her
later can give you a glimpse into how fabulous she was
and how important she was to the club. From the
smallest of events to the largest, her influence showed.
She was the one who got me so involved with the club and it was through
her example that showed me the way it could be done. All because of one
fateful margarita at lunch. Once James and I became enmeshed in the
club, she became like a 2nd mother to me. Then, when my own mother
died, she was quick to try to fill that void. She helped me so much during
that difficult time. She also became like a grandmother to Jasmine, who
loved her right back.
So many people have stories they would like to share about how they
met Lanean or how she was important to them. If you would like to share
those stories, I would love to hear them and put them on the online blog.
What a wonderful source of inspiration and comfort it would be for her
family and close friends to read and remember this lovely lady. Although
she wasn’t perfect (who is?), she was memorable and truly truly loved. If
you would like to send me your story or rememberance, please email it
to me at [email protected] and I will post it to the blog. If you don’t
know the blog address, email me and I’ll forward you the link. I will post
them quickly so that everyone can delight in these memoirs.
This month is our Founders’ Day event. I hope many of you can
attend. It should be a wonderful,
fun-filled event. We’ve learned
from one of the best on how to
make it great. It’ll take a team of
people to pull off what Lanean
did seemingly so effortlessly.
Then, in December is not
only our Holiday Party, but we
will work on getting a date to
stuff stockings for the Hope Shelter and schedule a trip out to Mineral
Wells to celebrate with the staff and residents. This is when we get to
bring those wonderful donated toys and delight in seeing their overjoyed
faces. By that time, they will have moved into the new Huffaker-Hughes
Hope House! There have been numerous volunteer teams who have gone
to the shelter over the past few months to help paint, clean, install light
fixtures, door knobs, attic stairs, and whatever else that has come up.
Volunteers have also stepped forward to decorate rooms from top to
bottom. The region board has donated enough money to buy new trun-
dle beds for the rooms. The work is not completely done, but by
November 15th, it should be ready to move in. Over the next few weeks,
there will be a flurry of activity to make sure that it’s ready. With Lanean’s
spirit looking over us and an army of volunteers, we can make it happen!
We will miss our Hope Angel and hope we’ll make her proud. I won-
der what her view is like in Heaven? Embrace life, love unconditionally,
and enjoy your view like Lanean enjoyed hers.

In Loving Memory of Lanean
Back in May of 1992, Laneanjoined a singles group in herchurch. There she met a young,
good looking guy named BrianScudder, who she quickly found outowned a Porsche 928 and was a member of the Maverick RegionPorsche Club of America. Well, thatwas all it took… they became friendsright away. She attended a time trialevent with him, where he nearly took top time of day (in the rain),ostensibly trying to impress her. Theystarted dating soon after. That was thestart of her illustrious “career” withthe club. Her relationship with Brian
spanned 8 years, but her bond with the club was to last a lifetime. She bought her very own Porsche, a 944 turbo that had formerlybelonged to a Maverick member, Don Meredith, who had passedaway unexpectedly. His spirit was the reason she chose that car.
Since 1992, Lanean held several positions on the local board, including Vice President and (unofficially) “First Lady” to Brian'spresidency. She chaired countless events, both driving and socialand was active in organizing many others. Her highest positionwas at the national level, where she became the National AwardsChair. But with every position she held, she took it to new levels, beyond what anyone before had done.
Lanean also became instrumental in handling sponsors, bothlocally and nationally. These sponsors loved and feared her at thesame time. With her infectious smile, she was able to coax manyof them out of money and door/raffle prizes. When she left theirstores, “the cupboard was bare.” They knew, though, that theycould count on her to treat them right when the time came. Shegave her all to make sure they got the exposure and praise thatthey did, and their businesses were the better for it.
Through this work with sponsors, she also achieved a position with the national Porsche Parade committee. She helpedwith numerous Parades across the country and two in the Texasarea (San Antonio in 1997 and Fort Worth in 2004). Early on, shebegan integrating children into the formerly adult-centric eventwith her kids' autocross. This was just the beginning of greatchanges for kids' activities at Parade. Many children across thecountry have her to thank for a fun-filled week for them and notjust their parents.
During one of the many trips she made to events in MineralWells, she was told of a local shelter (the Hope Shelter) for battered women and children. She was instantly intrigued andwanted to help. She began raising money and collecting donateditems for the shelter. Her home would never again look the same,as she always seemed to have a pile of “stuff” to bring to the shel-ter. This was either in her spare bedroom, living room, diningroom, or on her porch/patio. If the pile wasn't goods for the shelter to use, it was a pile of items for a raffle or silent auction. She was always looking for ways to help them. She felt so connected, particularly during the holidays. She would ask everyone in the region to collect hotel soaps, shampoos, free cos-metic samples, and small toys during the year. She would then buy
a bunch of stockings to put these little gems in for the new guestsat the shelter. In December she would get a group of people together to sort and stuff ~100 stockings every year, all packed andlabeled according to the appropriate age group. What necessities weren't donated, she would buy. She never left the shelter workers out, either. She was always able to find a little some-thing for each of them to say thank you for all their hard work. Asmall group of people would accompany her to the shelter for a festive Christmas celebration, where she would happily give thestockings and toy donations collected from the Maverick Region'sholiday party to the women and children at the shelter. For Lanean,it was pure bliss… seeing the grateful faces of the battered womenand the overjoyed faces of their children, opening presents theynever thought they would get. She did it all for the hugs.
Two years ago, Mark Gluck, was moved by Lanean's passion forthe shelter, and came up with the idea to build a new facility for theshelter. The existing one was in a 100+ year old home,in extremely poor condition. Families were packed into few bedrooms and one bathroom. It was clearly insufficient. So, Laneanhelped take up that charge, even more doggedly finding ways to raisemoney to build that building. She inspired others, as well, which haspaid off. The new shelter will be ready for residents and workers injust a few short weeks. As a tribute to her and the shelter's director,it will be named the “Huffaker Hughes Hope House.”
Lanean's work with the club led her to receive numerousnotable awards. She received our local Enthusiast Award, theSelcer Award, THREE times - a record. In 1999, she receivedPCA's National Enthusiast of the Year Award. Through her tirelesswork for the shelter and moving other regional members toaction, she won the Public Service Award for the region in 1996,netting the Hope Shelter a $1500 prize. She was also instrumentalin helping the region win the much coveted “Region of the Year”award in 1998. Lanean has also been honored for her tireless workboth at Drivers' Education and Club Racing events, where she hassingle-handedly changed the face of hospitality at the track.
Actions and awards aside, kids were her life. Whether it washer own 4 children that she helped support or one of the countless region kids, Parade kids, or shelter kids… it didn't matter. She lived for their happiness. She glowed when they did.
People across the nation are mourning for our loss.Maverick Region and PCA have a hole that may never be filled. Shelived as if there was no tomorrow, with no regrets about what shecould have done. Her motto was, “Live Well, Laugh Often, LoveMuch.” She has taught us much about how to live life to its fullest. She has touched our lives so much and will be missed more than words could ever express.
Life is notmeasured by thenumber of breathswe take, but by themoments that takeour breath away.

As Labor Day Weekend approaches, the Maverick Region memberthinks to himself, “Ahhh…Labor Day weekend! But, what to dowith such a glorious end of summer? It's Texas, so the weather will
be great! How about a day or two at the lake? Naw, that's just too lazy-I'm an energetic, high-speed kind of guy.”
“A college football game or two? No way-that's watching other people having fun. Hmmm…well, how about just a day or two at home, with a barbecue? No, gotta have some excitement!”
“Wait! How about diving into the Rattlesnake braking zone at 110 orso? Then a nice right-left-right, little throttle steer on the left, little drift onthat nice big right onto the new section of track. Hard left-foot brake anddownhill fast after that left-hander…” The Maverick's thoughts quicklydrift through a mental rehearsal of the 3.1-mile course.
The grin begins, and widens.
“Keith Olcha and Lee Wilkins will be there for sure. If you can't learnsomething from those guys, you're probably dead. Jan Mayo has gotta bethe best and prettiest pit marshall in all of PCA, maybe all of motorsport.Bobby Archer is always good for tires, brake pads, tape, and advice… PSTand Fifth Gear, too. All the Mavericks will be there.”
Yes, sports fans, our Maverick PCAer has truly come into that decision-making zone called the “no-brainer…”
And the event more than lives up to his expectations! As the accompanying pictures show, the Mavericks and their fast friends spentLabor Day weekend in style on a dry, warm MotorSport Ranch track, saying sayonara to summer in the best of all possible ways!
There was, however, a sad note: Thiswas Lanean Hughes’ last weekend at theRanch with us. Many Mavericks learnedthat weekend of her diagnosis of lung cancer, and with many hugs, prayers, andtears wished her the best. Yet, after a valiantstruggle she passed away October 9. Ifheaven has a track, she is surely doing char-ity laps and organizing workers at the trackin a much better place!
Yes, the Mavericks said, “adieu” tosummer, but more importantly to Lanean,in fine style. We will be back for anotherround next year.
Stay tuned for more news of the Mavericks and their fast friends!
Ed and Tracey Gross get ready to go on track.

The 2006 Maverick autocross and time trial season featured several rule changes designed to improve competition and give morepeople a chance at winning the top driver award. The main changeswere a new classification system that reduced the number of classesand a top driver runoff where the top ten points-earning male andfemale drivers during the season would drive the same car for twolaps and the lowest time would win the top driver award. The charity autocross, sponsored by Autobahn, at the TMS bus lot was setfor the top driver runoff event and, for those not in the hunt, a greattime to come out and “run what ya brung.” It always features fun andunusual vehicles that you don't see at most autocrosses. Proceedsfrom this event go to benefit the Hope Shelter.
For the top driver competition, chairman Bryan Bell had procured aMazda Speed 6 with competition tires, arollbar and stick shift. This was a car thatnone of the competitors had driven inan autocross (to make things fair).Names were drawn to determine therunning order. Kevin Hardison, myfavorite to win the men's competition, was selected in the unfortunate number1 position. Most of the usual suspectswere in the competition including JamesShoffit, Mark Steele, Mike Lockas andRick Randall in the men's and WendyShoffit, Lisa Steele and Tracey Gross in the women's. After the firsteight drivers had completed their runs, I had managed to turn in fasttime of the competition and Wendy was fastest of the women but thecar seemed to be developing some problems.
The second group of eight drivers went out with the group Bautocrossers and unfortunately the Mazda developed a big problemand the second group was not able to get their runs in. Meanwhile, the Subaru STI's with their sticky tires and four wheel driving wereturning in blazing times on the slick surface at TMS. Rick Gonzales inhis very fast 914-6 put in the fast Porsche time. If you haven't been outhere and driven on the surface, it's really something. Smooth andslick, it gives you the sensation of floating and the fast way around iswhen the car is drifting quite noticeably. If it's wet, however, there's nogrip at all and I wouldn't go over five miles an hour.
Charlie Davis designed another fun course that was very fast anda suited the surface very well. Bryan Bell did an excellent job for theentire season as AX and TT chair. Wendy, Charlie, Rick, Mike, Shelley,James and Darron all helped make the 2006 AX and TT season go smoothly.

The 9th annual BoxstoberFest was once again held in central Texas
town of Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is a unique town -
borne of German ancestry, and is a perfect setting for this event.
BoxstoberFest is the largest gathering of Porsche Boxsters in the
Southwest, and is the only major Porsche event that is complety free -
participants only pay for their own meals and lodging. This is due to
the tremendous effort of the event coordinators from Hill Country,
Lone Star, Maverick and Longhorn regions:
Bob Bianconi, Steve Boyd, Ted Pietrzak, Lee Smith, Jim Basey,
Geoff Roberts, Michael Shassere & Matt (the Car Nut) Marcelissen.
Over 90 enthusiasts, arriving in over 50 Porsche Boxsters (and a
few, 911, 944, and 968s) descended on Fredericksburg for
Boxstoberfest. Attendees came from not only Texas, but Oklahoma,
Missouri, Louisiana, Colorado and several other states. On Friday
evening, the attendees gathered at The Auslander Restaurant for
registration, to receive their welcome packets with information for
the weekend events, to reacquaint with old friends and meet new
ones. Saturday morning the attendees gathered for the second
straight year at the Gillespie County Airport, and lined up to display
their vehicles on the tarmac in front of the Hangar Hotel and Diner.
This is truly a first class facility, and there is no better venue to display
these fine automobiles. Hotel guests and area residents came out in
large numbers to see the cars and talk to the owners.
Mid morning, the drivers departed in 3 separate groups to tour
the beautiful Texas Hill Country and enjoy the winding roads so well
suited for the drivers to experience the perfection of these vehicles.
The driving groups were led by Michael Shassere, Geoff Roberts and
Jim Basey. All three groups met up in Leakey TX for lunch at The
Frio Pecan Farm and enjoyed one of the best BBQ meals everyone
said they had ever had. After lunch the 3 groups again departed for
more driving in the Hill Country. The groups even made a quick stop
by a 2/3 replica of the famous Stonehenge monument - another Texas
uniguity.
Late afternoon all 3 groups returned to the airport to enjoy
refreshments at the Officers Club – an excellent lounge located in the
Hangar Hotel - to wind down from the days events and share with
others the adventures of the day.
Many first time attendees do not realize that this area of Texas
offers driving roads equal to or superior to anywhere else in the US -
Boxstoberfest 2006by R. Michael Shassere
winding, twisting roads with substantial elevation changes
punctuated by long open stretches and sweeping turns. Some post
drive comments were: "I had no idea there were roads like this in TX,
I'm coming back next year", "Wow, you sure drive fast in Texas
(someone from the slow group)", "Could barely keep up in the
twisties with my wife in her Boxster", "Awesome!!!".
The group left the officers club to freshened up, then gathered at
Torre di Pietra Winery and enjoyed a wonderful meal under the huge
open air pavilion. Due to our wonderful sponsors, each attendee was
able to receive 2 door prizes in the drawings. One lucky attendee
walked away with a Porsche Boxster child's pedal car, provided by
Autobahn Porsche, and another received a gift certificate for 2 free
nights to Das Gelbe Haus – a Fredericksburg Bed & Breakfast owned
by one of the event organizers.
In addition to Autobahn and Das Gelbe Haus, other sponsors
were : Zims Autotechnik, Langka, Longhorn Region, Mid-America
Motor Works, Pelican Parts, Beasley Porsche, jewels for Cars, Griot's
Garage, Texas Driver Magazine, Bumper Plugs, Ruf Autocentre,
Imagine Auto, Car Care Online, Porsche Pete's Boxster Board,
RadarRack and Suncoast Porsche.
The 10th annual BoxstoberFest 2007 has already been scheduled,
and will be held from Sept 7-9, 2007.

We are now building and taking orders for Porsche 924/944's for SCCA, PCA and NASA racing forthe 2007 season.
With the addition of the PCA 944-SPEC (SP1-SP3) series, there is now a greater than ever venueto economically race these cars. In SCCA, you can have a GT2, GT3, EP, or ITA racer. With PCA,you can pick from a number of classes, dependent upon your car.
Cars are built from mild to wild, depending upon what class you plan to enter and to what levelyou want to participate.
Our experience building and racing Porsches goes back to our 911's in the mid and late 70's,924's and 944's in the 80's in SCCA, IMSA GTU and Firehawk, PCA in the late and early 80's/90's,and Speedvision GT, Rolex GT and GT in 2000 up. In addition to the Porsches, we have had ahand in building five AUDI S4's for the Grand AM Cup, and a couple of AUDI TT's for SCCA.
We can build on our inventory of chassis's, or take yours and develop it into the race car you want.
Get ready for the 2007 season NOW!! We plan to attend and support as many race events for2007 as our racing schedule will allow.

The following is a question I had on the PCA tech site, along
with my answer. As I get similar questions often, it’s good
information to share.
Question: I am in the process of searching for a full
service shop that will complete the restoration of my 1969 911.
In order to make sure I have selected a competent shop what
questions should I ask? I would like to return the car to stock.
The car is in decent shape; however, a bad re-spray and some
other D.I.Y. fixes (by the previous owner) need to be addressed.
The car runs and does not have any appreciable amounts of
rust. I would like a complete a bare metal re-spray done with
the original factory color. It seems the 356 guys have any
number of shops that will do this...the 911 guys do not. I am on
a budget, but am more concerned that the restoration be
performed correctly. Please help!
Answer: I always suggest asking your local PCA members
who they have used for their work. Word of mouth reputation
always beats fancy print ads. Then go look at these places, talk
to the owner, see who you feel comfortable with, LOOK at the
work going on in the shop, stop in a month later and see if there
has been progress on those projects since you were last there.
Ask how a project is organized as far as how you are billed for
work completed. I don't know of any shops that can afford to
front your entire project until it is completed. Sometimes large
body shops that do a lot of crash damage work are not the best
place to do major restoration work; they sometimes get bogged
down in time consuming detail work. Any disassembly and
reassembly that you can do yourself (if you're able to do that)
will mean less chance of the shop losing things. When you think
you've found somebody, try them out on a small portion of
repair first (like a rust repair project) before letting them tear
into your car, completely disassembling it, then finding out you
don't like working with them. Sometimes a small shop can
better handle a large project better, because they will devote
more of their time to doing your car, and getting it done
sooner. A lot depends on their level of equipment and painting
facilities, and how long they've been around. You don't want to
be some fly-by-night outfit’s first customer.

Just a couple of years ago, Dan Gage and Bill Georgas sat under a
hot Texas sun waiting take a few more laps around a track, when
they started daydreaming about the type of track and amenities
they would offer if they ever had a facility of their own.
Their “daydreaming” has become reality as dirt turns on Racers
Ranch, the partners’ beautiful country club for car enthusiasts just
east of Dallas near Terrell.
“It’s become much more than just a track, with a few nice
garages and bathrooms, like we first talked about,” laughed Bill.
“Neither of us ever imagined we would be where we are today with
Racers Ranch. It’s incredible!”
What will set Racers Ranch apart from other tracks in the
Dallas/Fort Worth area and the country, is that the sprawling 1,300
acre site will include a variety of country club features such as a
clubhouse, pool, equestrian center, gun club plus a shared ranch,
with limited home sites, surrounded by conservation preserved land.
However, the center piece of Racers Ranch will be the flowing
3.5 mile road race circuit created by celebrated designer Alan Wilson
of Wilson Motorsports. Because of their commitment to making
Racers Ranch one of the finest venues in the country, asking Alan
Wilson to design the race circuit was a simple choice.
“We are dedicated to excellence in every aspect of Racers
Ranch,” Dan explained. “When we started considering who we
wanted to design the race circuit for us, Alan was the obvious choice.
He has such a strong reputation world wide.”
The feeling is mutual according to Alan, especially after
realizing the level of commitment from Bill and Dan to making
Racers Ranch a world-class facility.
“In my business I get numerous calls from people dreaming of
building a track. But I am very specific in making sure they have the
understanding of what it takes,” he said. “Bill and Dan know the
market in Dallas/Fort Worth; they have a very good business plan,
financing plan and a very good site. It all came together to make
perfect sense to design the race circuit.”
What excites Alan about Racers Ranch is that he is designing,
basically, two race circuits in one. Once completed the race circuit
will have the versatility to be divided into two separate courses
allowing for events or races to be run simultaneously.
“It is a beautiful tract of land and the race circuit will be fun,
challenging and above all safe,” Alan said. “The terrain has nice
slopes which will allow for good character to the track. This is
important since, at times, it will be divided into two tracks.
It’s essential that both are viable on their own, with their own
uniqueness.”
Besides safety, both Bill and Dan said the other major goal is
that the race circuit is one all members of Racers Ranch will enjoy
regardless of their level of driving expertise.
“Our idea is not to design a race circuit for the pro, formula-one
driver,” Bill explained. “We want it to challenge the average driver as
well as the experienced driver so everyone has fun.”
Much like the various car clubs, Dan said Racers Ranch will
foster a sense of unity that all car enthusiasts appreciate.
“We know we will have members who will enjoy simply polish-
ing their car while talking about cars with their neighbors and other
members,” he stated. “Just as much as we will have the members who
want to challenge their driving abilities. Racers Ranch will have
something for everyone.”
Besides prospective members, the excitement about Racers
Ranch is growing in the motor sport community. Recently, The
Drivers Edge, organizer of high-performance events in Texas, named
Racers Ranch their new home facility.
Groundbreaking was held in July and asphalt is scheduled to
be poured on the race circuit in the first quarter of 2007. Visit
www.racersranch.com to learn more about Racers Ranch and
membership opportunities. You can also read about visiting Racers
Ranch during Open Houses scheduled for October 21, November 11
and December 2, 2006.
To get a taste of the race circuit, schedule a tour of Racers Ranch
or get information on the limited home sites in the shared ranch, call
Dan at 214.215.4582 or Bill at 214.364.7483.

Our September 21 happy hour at Cantina Laredo was a quiet,
warm affair with about thirty Mavericks in attendance. As
was the case with our first happy hour here (about a year and
a half ago), we had a separate room upstairs that was comfortable
and semi-private, but not completely isolated from the rest of the
restaurant. The Cantina Laredo staff did a great job with the service,
and the prices and food are just right. It's another repeat for our
happy hour locations.
New members included Luke
Edson (1999 911) and Judd and
Jennifer Taylor, who were attending
their second happy hour. It was also
good to see Keith and Pat Chambers,
who were attending partially because
the happy hour was in their general
neighborhood.
For our November 16th happy
hour we're trying a new and exciting
place in Colleyville, close to the other
Colleyville restaurants that we've
visited in the past. This one is Rio
Mambo. Hope to see you there.
