includes strategies for harvesting and building access roads, compliance monitoring and reporting, and sustainably managing the area.

“We are pleased to work with Pikangikum First nation so the community can undertake forest management activities in the Whitefeather Forest,” said David

Orazietti, minister of natural Resources. “issuing the Sustainable Forest License is an important step in implementing P i k a n g i k u m ’ s community-based land

use strategy and is a positive outcome of land use planning in the Far north. it will allow Pikangikum to influence its own economic destiny and guide forestry in the area to bring jobs and opportunity to the community.”

“i am pleased by this milestone and what it means for Ontario and First nations in this province,” added David Zimmer, minister of aboriginal affairs. “issuing the Sustainable Forest License is one of the ways Ontario and First

nation communities are forging lasting partnerships. Working together on priority areas, we’re creating economic development opportunities and helping build stronger, healthier communities, both now and in the future.”

Hudson saw mill slowly building workforceTim Brody

aSSociate editor

THE start-up has been slower than anticipated for

the mckenzie Lumber incorporated saw mill in Hudson.

When it was announced in February that the mill was back up and running it was hoped five to six months down the line 80 to 100 people would be employed at the mill.

as of last week, mill general manager Don Fenelon stated 32 people are currently working.

“We’re striving to get back into a range where we’re comfortable. it took us a bit to get our machines back up and running maintenance wise,” Fenelon said.

asked about the possibility of more jobs opening up at

the mill Fenelon said, “That’s going to take a while longer yet. We’re currently trying to gather up more wood supply for the sawmill itself and

that will help determine how many people we can hire.”

He continued, “We’re working with Lac Seul (First nation) and we’re

working with Domtar to try to ensure we gather enough wood to sustain us from the Lac Seul Forest.”

The company is

proceeding cautiously, Fenelon said. “We’re on the right track and the markets are favourable for us. We don’t want to go too fast and we’ll

progress throughout the year.”

Sawmill two is currently in operation at the mill producing 2 x 3 to 2 x 6 pieces of lumber.

Let’s keep it PG, okay?guess who’s back,

back again? meaghan’s back, tell a friend!

i guess i said my goodbyes a little too early… how awkward.

anyway, i have a little story to tell about my weekend. i went to the Red River

Exhibition and i went on the sling shot… again. now, now, that’s not the whole point of the story.

my friend had wanted to get these ViP type things that allow us to cut in line for rides. i thought it seemed pretty cool and it wasn’t

too expensive, so i agreed. We had a paper band that we had to wear around our wrist and they also gave us something else that went around our neck. Like an actual ViP necklace type thing, you know?

We made our way to the sling shot and i could already feel my butterflies forming in the pit of my stomach. i was excited – i lived for this! Well, not really, but i enjoyed these type

of rides. We paid the man at

the front and walked through the gate. as we approached the stairs, the guy who operated the ride was sitting in the pod and he pointed toward our stomach area. i looked down and realized my ViP pass was there. i removed it from my neck and put it on the table. my friend, however, didn’t make the connection. instead, she started removing the belt that she wore

with her shirt. Once i saw her doing this, i couldn’t help but laugh. The guy sitting in the pod gave her a strange look. i decided to help her.

“now, now, he meant your ViP pass. Don’t go undressing!” i laughed. She looked at me, looked at him, looked at her ViP pass and burst out laughing. Her face was a little red, but hey, at least i stopped her from completely taking off her belt, right?

Morgan Fuels Safety Rodeo

Dryden airport was the venue June 5 for the morgan Fuels inaugural safety rodeo, attended by 12 professional drivers of the morgan Team along with members of their senior management.

While the word rodeo may conjure up images of cowboys and, to most, excessive risk, this event is all about driver skill and safety.

Sponsored by the sales and operations advisor team of martyn iles (Senior account Executive) and Peter Szmidt (Operations advisor), the event

kicked off with a safety brief, purpose of the event, loss prevention observation on the tandem trucks (completed by the drivers), in addition to a virtual product delivery, whereby the drivers provided a commentary of the step by step actions they would take in delivering product when there was a change in service (i.e. - delivering dyed diesel then going to clear diesel).

The second phase of the rodeo was the driver skill portion, involving six manoeuvres in which the drivers executed a

lane change, reversed into a tight area, parallel parked, drove a figure 8 in forward and backup motions, drove a straight line in a narrow area and stopped as close as possible to a line on the tarmac.

Each of the course elements had safety cones and lines that the drivers had to stay within, and drivers gained or lost points depending how successful they were in completing the exercise.

Each event was intended to test the driver’s skill in handling the truck in various situations using the learning they have from the Smith System of Driver Training.

The event concluded with a teambuilding BBQ and award presentation, with the

top three scoring drivers receiving garmin gPS systems for their personal vehicles as well as bragging rights.

Darrell morgan, President of morgan Fuels, said, “The morgan Fuels Safety Rodeo is all about reinforcing with our drivers the knowledge, skills and

compliance to rules and regulations that is needed to safely handle petroleum products and equipment, and the driver professionalism needed to safely serve the communities morgan Fuels operates in.”

Sioux Lookout Public Library launches TD

Summer Reading ClubOn Wednesday, June

19, the Sioux Lookout Public Library welcomed a group of children from the Waninawakang aboriginal Head Start and a grade 1/2 class from Sioux mountain Public School to celebrate the launch of the 2013 TD Summer Reading Club.

These young readers viewed the premiere of a promotional video produced by the Sioux Lookout Public Library with the assistance of volunteer filmmaker Joseph Hunt. This short movie stars mike Laverty (assistant /

Children’s Librarian), his son isaac, and a group of visiting animals, who are the stars of this year’s reading club. Visit the library youTube channel to watch this video: youTube.com/SLPublicLibrary.

a decorative cake, featuring the work of award winning illustrator matt James was served as children listened to a classic children’s story, michael Rosen’s We’re going on a Bear Hunt.

The theme for this year’s TD Summer Reading Club is go! Children are invited to visit the library for a summer of epic adventures, stories from around the globe,

and fantastic voyages! Three different age groups (preschool, 4-8, and 8-12) meet every Wednesday from June 26 to august 21. Everyone who registers in the Summer Reading Club receives an activity book and a passport to be filled with unique stickers. Participants meet once a week for storytime, movie making, crafts, musical performances, drama, and other fun activities.

Children also discuss their favourite books and add their progress to the library’s wall of fame! The library will host several special events and visits from local artists throughout the summer that are open to everyone.

Every book a child reads, and reports on in their activity booklet, earns one ballot in a prize raffle for a children’s eReader tablet.

Visit the TD Summer

Reading Club website at tdsummerreadingclub.ca and enter the code word aRViaT to unlock games, stories, and literacy activities on the TD Summer Reading Club website.

For more information about this program visit SLPL.On.Ca, phone 737-3660 (ext. 4403), or email [email protected].

Health Centre Foundation President marnie Hoey stated, “i think that we should share with everyone how important it is to have a leader and a champion and definitely Harvey Friesen and Bearskin airlines are champions at fundraising, generosity and encouraging others to support healthcare. He’s raised awareness for us. We’re able to provide better services and more services thanks to support like his to

make meno ya Win the best healthcare centre in this area.”

Crime Stoppers representative Shelley mcammond said, “We’re very grateful to receive this support. it goes a long way toward stopping crime in our communities and making them safer.”

Bearskin airlines President Harvey Friesen commented, “i think the tournament went very well. We had a little different format with two groups of four

going out together and it was excellent. People had a great time. The play moved along at a good pace. Except for the thunder storm, which nobody could do anything about, it was perfect.”

Commenting on the organizations this year’s tournament is supporting, Friesen said, “We have supported Crime Stoppers once before in the past. We felt that they do really good work and we like to support them. it’s impossible to support

everyone. There are so many groups in need. you do what you can.”

He continued, “We really support the hospital and the foundation. There is so much need, not only from Sioux Lookout but from the north as well. unfortunately i think we could have more support from governments, with the things that are happening in the north, diabetes and other health issues and now we’re looking forward to a senior citizens care home of some

kind. it’s a huge need and it’s going to be a huge expense but when you look at the north and all the people there that are going to need a home as they get older and with the health issues, what we’re really pushing for is another full care home near the hospital area. not necessarily taking away from the William george centre but something similar to it. it’s just way too small. it can’t handle 10 per cent of what we need so that’s going to be a push. We need to do something to help.”

This was also the 15th

year Bearskin airlines has held the charity golf classic in Thunder Bay.

Friesen said both tournaments combined have raised more than a million dollars to support their respective communities. “in fact it’s approaching two million,” he said.

Friesen thanked sponsors and participants for their continued support over the years.

He said it is important to him and his company that the funds raised at these charity events remain within the community.

Cross-Canada cyclist Kirk Davis shares travel talesShayla Bradley

Staff Writer

many people travel the country by train,

plane and automobile, but Sioux Lookout resident kirk Davis has seen it all from his bicycle.

“in 2008 i was looking for a summer activity besides walking and running, and biking was

an obvious next step,” he said. “i often go down to Southern Ontario to visit family and decided i would cycle down that summer. i ended up doing a fundraiser for a teen program based out in Lac Seul.”

Davis cycled Ontario that year, then Toronto to Halifax in 2011 with local friend Bill michaud.

most recently he cycled his way from Vancouver to Calgary.

“The Toronto to Halifax trip was very nice and for those interested, they can go to the ‘crazyguyonabike’ website and search by author for kirk Davis or search journals for Toronto to Halifax and my journal about the

trips should show up,” he shared. “i’m still working on the Vancouver to Calgary journal.”

The Vancouver to Calgary trip took nine days of cycling, with one rest day in Revelstoke.

“Cycling to the top of the summits was a highlight,” he recalled. “it feels great reaching the top; going down the other

side feels pretty good too. my favourite part of the ride was from Lake Louise to Banff through the Banff national Park on the Bow Valley Parkway and then onto Canmore cycling on the Legacy Trail. i have to say that it felt good cycling by a gas station and not having to fill up.”

The best part of cycling trips, according to Davis, is meeting local people and other travelers.

“This trip i met people from France, germany,

a 70 year old cyclist from Japan, a fellow from Spain, a group of Europeans doing a one year hiking tour of different hiking trails around the world, a man close to my age from South korea,” he said, adding that the young man will be staying with him in Sioux Lookout for a visit. “He spoke no English but we communicated through internet translation programs.

“i started the trip with a couple of cyclists from

“i usually stay at campgrounds and motels but this time we used the warmshowers website where other cyclists host you and that worked out very well.”

His goal with cycling is

to keep in good health and have fun at the same time, something he encourages others to try.

“For those who like to bike, i would recommend they try some rides to Hudson and back, then try a trip from Dryden to Sioux,” he said. “if you can do the Dryden to Sioux run then you’re ready to roll anywhere.

“i really enjoy riding on long trips; the smells, the people you meet, the challenges, even the rain. it’s a good way to see the country.

“When i left i weighed in at 183 pounds and the day i returned home, i weighed in at 169 pounds. Obviously, i was not eating enough ice cream.” Davis entering Rogers Pass in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia. Submitted Photo

Public updated on new transmission line Tim Brody

AssociAte editor

A project to bring a new transmission line to Pickle Lake

and later into northern First Nation communities is in the Environmental Assessment (EA) stage.

Wataynikaneyap Power, a jointly owned venture among 13 northern First

Nation communities and Goldcorp Canada Ltd, has started the EA process for phase 1 and is currently at the Terms of Reference stage of the EA process with approval to undertake the EA expected later this year.

While awaiting that approval, open houses have been conducted

throughout the area to provide updates on the project and gather further feedback.

The EA will look at everything from impact on the land and waterways to plants and animals to recreation and tourism uses, mining and forestry to traditional uses such as trapping, hunting and

fishing, gathering and to determine if any important sites are located along the proposed route.

An open house was held June 18 in Sioux Lookout at the Centennial Centre.

Phase one of the project, getting the line to Pickle Lake, is expected to generate 650 jobs during construction and 15 long term jobs afterward.

The existing line into Pickle Lake is more than 70 years old and is prone to frequent and sometimes prolonged outages. This project will reinforce transmission supply to Pickle Lake and provide a connection point for remote First Nation communities.

The line is expected to pass near Sioux

Lookout creating future opportunities to tie into it.

Phase one construction could be completed by the end of 2015.

Getting the line into northern communities, phase two of the project, could be completed by 2017.

Phase two is expected to create 1050 jobs during construction and 45 long term jobs.

Cuts From Time explores history through artShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

OLd family photos are new works of art, showcased at

artist Jenifer LaFrance’s hometown show Cuts From Time.

LaFrance, who recently graduated from Lakehead University with an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts, combined film photos, digital effects and woodworking to create the pieces, images painted on plywood, screened onto transparent blocks, and integrated into mixed media creations.

The end result brings to mind topographical maps, a connection LaFrance links with the lakes, rivers, and ground formations that form the landscape of Northwestern Ontario.

Her inspiration came from a desire to connect with her past.

“I’ve only met two of

my grandparents,” she explained. “I’ve always had this disconnect from the other ones. I didn’t know who they were, so I really got to explore who they were through old photos. I felt closer and more drawn to them with every piece.”

After putting the original images onto a computer, LaFrance applied digital effects, then considered how to turn them into physical pieces of art. She wanted to avoid creating flat paintings, opting to work with wood.

“I had done carving the year before,” she said, noting the material is something solid that stands out.

She had to show her professors what she planned to do, to prove it would work out. The gamble paid off.

“It was basically on a whim,” she said. “I started doing it, and it

was successful.”Her work is unique,

even within her university program.

“At our grad show there was a lot of drawing, ceramics, printmaking and stuff like that, but mine was the only one that was really sculpture or wood painting,” she recalled.

Looking at the intricate artwork, it is easy to tell each piece was part of a labour-intensive process, which LaFrance completed using a coping saw and drill along with other tools. She said the smaller pieces took longer as those were the first she undertook.

“The last one I did

was the self-portrait,” she said, referring to one of the largest pieces in the show. “That took me a week, probably, to do, but it was a lot of seven-hour days in there cutting.”

Having her family

history hanging on the walls of a Sioux Lookout gallery is especially fitting.

“I love coming home,” she said. “Everyone here is so supportive… people know who you are

because it’s such a small town, so it’s so easy to be welcomed.”

The show at the A-Frame Gallery runs through July 16, by chance or by appointment.

Are you interested in making a difference in a young man’s life?

If you are, a 22 year old First Nations man living with FASD is looking for a couple to share his life with.

Ideally one person living with him would be able to share his day. This gentleman is most successful when his environment is kind, caring and structured. He likes to keep busy and would appreciate country living where he could help with outside chores, including pets. Hunting and being out on the water fishing is very important to this young man. He also enjoys playing sports such as hockey and weight lifting but can also find pleasure in cooking and being a help around the home. He has just begun to explore his First Nations culture and would welcome the support to continue this journey.

Community Living Dryden-Sioux Lookout is currently supporting this young man. His circle of support is very diverse and will continue with him throughout his life.

If you feel you are a suitable match and you would be interested in joining our dynamic team, as a Family Home Provider, please call Amy Woolfrey at 223-3364 extension 26.

Seeds of good relations planted by friendship accordShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

JUNE 21 marked the one-year anniversary of Sioux Lookout,

Lac Seul, and Slate Falls signing a friendship accord recognizing the ongoing cultural, social, and economic relationships among the three communities. In the year that has passed, partners worked together to build the foundation for the accord to potentially develop in the future.

“I believe it’s going along pretty well,” said Lac Seul Chief Clifford Bull. “We’ve had several meetings

and we’ve certainly had a lot of issues that were put forth. We’ve had a facilitator that kind of oversees the whole meeting process. We’re guided by timelines and work that we have to do in order to meet some of our goals.”

Leaders routinely connect outside of regularly scheduled meetings, Bull added.

“We try to have supper meetings and talk about issues, for example things like homelessness and how we can work together to address those serious issues.”

Bull said the partners try to be diversified in

holding their meetings both in Sioux Lookout and Lac Seul with a goal of ensuring every community is represented.

“At some point we’d like to meet in Slate Falls,” he added.

The geographical distance between communities, along with busy calendars, can be a challenge. A June 20 meeting was cancelled due to the state of crisis in Slate Falls following a car accident that claimed the lives of community members.

“The only thing I see that is kind of challenging is trying to

bring everybody together under one roof,” said Bull. “Everybody’s schedule is so busy and hectic… other than that it’s been great.”

Bull said he sees the accord continuing in a similar path, noting he has had people from other communities approach him to learn

about the partnership, including Treaty Three chiefs.

“It’s been very positive,” he said.

“I think it’s really

going well,” echoed Sioux Lookout mayor dennis Leney. “We’ve had two meetings with Lac Seul and Slate Falls and we brought in a facilitator a month ago. We brought up different things we feel we should be looking at in the future.”

A common issue shared by the communities is sorting out social problems, as many people who are removed from their home communities through band council resolutions end up in Slate Falls, Lac Seul and Sioux Lookout, said Leney.

“They’re having the same similar problems that we are,” he said.

Here in Sioux Lookout,

there is visible proof of relationships among the partners.

“It’s good to see Lac Seul is working with our community and they’ve got their Tim Hortons now, and the arena is opened up over there,” said Leney. “Everything they do reflects on all of us.”

Similar to Bull, Leney has experienced outside communities wanting to know more about the accord.

“One thing we found out when Ann (Mitchell, municipal CAO) and I went to the FCM (Federation of Canadian Municipalities) in Vancouver last month, in the networking part of it we sit and talk

with other mayors and councilors,” he said. “They couldn’t believe we had this going on with First Nations people. They were asking us for information… we’re kind of an example and it’s kind of snowballing, which I think is fantastic.”

The partners are now approaching Pickle Lake, Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake to join the accord, Leney shared.

“I think it’s a really momentous thing to have occurred,” said Sioux Lookout councilor Joyce Timpson.

Timpson said she is happy to see a number of committees formed between municipal and First Nation

representatives, working to define what formal relationships will be.

The grandfather rocks now located in Centennial Park, donated to the municipality by Lac Seul, are a tangible display of a good working relationship, according to Timpson.

“I think the existence of the seven grandfather rocks here, it’s almost like a climax and it’s fitting for being one year from the day we signed,” she said on National Aboriginal day.

“I feel the friendship accord is a good thing, particularly when we have neighbouring communities like Lac Seul and Sioux Lookout,” said community member

Garnet Angeconeb. “There are other First Nation communities within driving range that need to come together, even the fly-in communities.

“This is a meeting point for Aboriginal people and many others, not just Aboriginal people. It’s a meeting place. We have Americans that come up here. We have the hospital that attracts people. Part of that friendship accord is specifically for First Nations, but there are a lot of good spinoffs from that.”

Angeconeb said the accord sets the tone to build relations.

“I think we haven’t

seen the friendship accord go into action yet simply because I know the leaders are still working on developing it, what does it mean, what are issues out there we need to tackle, but it’s a really important starting point,” he added. “We may have not seen a lot in the last year but let’s just say that we want to do it right the first time, and so we have to work very diligently, but carefully, in terms of what this accord means for everybody in this region.

“We’ll see the fruits of the labour coming out in the months and years ahead. It’s a good starting point.”

QEDHS offering summer learning opportunities

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

QUEEN Elizabeth district High School (QEdHS)

is offering opportunities for learners to catch up or even get ahead on their courses this summer.

Four programs are underway at the school, including summer co-op, a connections program through which students can take a variety of courses, a reach ahead program and an outreach program.

QEdHS principal Steve Poling explained, “The

reach ahead program is for incoming Grade 8 students who are interested in learning more about the school. The outreach program reaches out to students who haven’t been connected with school or have become disconnected from school, trying to reconnect them with school to help them get a credit and set them up for success in September.”

People can still sign up for the programs which are running until the beginning of August.”

Poling concluded, “This is my third year as principal and this is the third year we’ve done this. Last year we generated 150 credits during the summer. We have a large, very strong summer program. For some of the students who didn’t finish off a credit or fell behind this is an opportunity to get caught up. Any situation where a student fell behind, this is a great chance to get caught up. We have one student who plans to work ahead.”

Sacred Heart School Valedictorian addressJessica Wisnoski &

Cassidy RomynsHs VAledictoriAns

i’m Jesse, and i’m Cassidy. Ten years ago in

Kindergarten we came into Sacred Heart not knowing what to expect. We learned our aBCs, 123s, and how to share with our friends, although some of us still have trouble with that. The most important thing in Kindergarten seemed to be who had the best toy. The girls were always fighting over the Barbies, which didn’t always end well for the Barbies.

Then next year after graduating Kindergarten, we were now doing full days of school in Grade 1. The days were much longer and more was expected of us. i remember pointing to the calendar with my middle finger and getting in trouble. i had no idea what i did wrong. i didn’t know what it meant to use your middle finger then. Another fond memory in Grade 1 was watching lizzy and Taylor stand on the desks and fight over Evan. He was a ladies man.

in Grade 2 we heard loud bomb like noises and we had to hide under the desks for like two hours for a lockdown. We later found out that the hospital was doing blasting! i don’t think any of us understood what was going on. We were just happy to not have to do work and sit on the floor with the lights out.

a confusing moment in Grade 3 was when ms. Switzer came back

and had the new name of mrs. Gaudry. She helped us to work hard to prepare for the EQaO testing. We had a lot of pressure on us. it was a good feeling to finish the testing, however, the gum was the best part.

in Grade 4 we decided to have a strike. it was indoor recess but we really wanted to go outside, even though it was minus 40! Our political reign did not last long. after the bell rang for class we all sat back down ready to learn. So it wasn’t really a strike!

The medieval feast was the highlight of Grade 4. We had chicken wings, Shae was queen and Justin was king. We all had our desks in a square shape and could throw the bones in the middle on garbage bags. Thank you, mrs. Pruys.

in Grade 5 my most memorable moment was when i stole ms. Crupi’s stapler and took it back to her in a bowl of cherry jello. april fools, ms. Crupi!

in Grade 6 the Old

Fort William trip was the big thing to look forward to. On the way there Chris O. put a barf bag on his head with eyes holes and a breathing hole. For some reason, we all started to call him Cat man and the bathroom on the coach bus was his cat cave. Old Fort was fun but we soon got tired of wearing the clothing on the hot sunny days, and eating soup with no broth.

in Grade 7 we had the rotary system which made classes faster and easier. around march ms. Savoie left because she was having a baby and we then had mr. Berst, aka Bersty. We all had mixed feelings about him. We loved him and disliked him at the same time. We liked him because he would waste class time with his spiels and we disliked him because he would waste time in class with his spiels.

One time at our Kenora soccer tournament a person accidentally bumped into him and he turned

around and jokingly said, “Come at me bro!” Which embarrassed all of us! The next day he had a really bad burn that only went up to half of his forehead and we enjoyed laughing with him about it.

Then one day when we were supposed to be doing science, he ended up spending the class explaining why Bella should choose Jacob instead of Edward. mr. Berst would choose Jacob.

We are now finished Grade 8. We ended our year with the Toronto trip. We spent 24 hours to get there and 24 to get back. all that time on the bus was well worth it. We have many fun memories of the trip. When we were at the Blue Jays games we were dressed in tie dye and we were on the big screen twice.

at marine land Paytan got to pet a huge beluga whale and make it dance. Canada’s Wonderland was one of the best parts. it was pouring rain and we were

soaked but we didn’t have to wait in any lines and it was awesome!

at Niagara Falls there was no point of trying to stay dry; the maid of the mist and Niagara Fury ruined any chance of that.

When we were shopping at Eaton’s everyone was buying clothes or shoes or souvenirs but, of course, Chris O. bought a child’s tricycle. it’s hard work to walk around that mall!

We had a great time, experiencing Toronto, building friendships and having some good laughs. We were all happy to come home from Toronto and get off the bus.

We would like to give a big thank you to some awesome people who made it possible for us to complete our journey from JK to Grade 8. Thank you to our Kindergarten teachers mrs. Gaudry and ms. Kuritnik, our Grade 1 teachers ms. Carbone and mrs. O’Donovan, our Grade 2 teachers mr. Carroll and mrs.

Vinczeffy, Our Grade 3 teachers mrs. Gaudry and mrs. Vinczeffy, our Grade 4 teachers ms. Pruys and mr. legros, our Grade 5 teachers ms. Crupi and ms. Glen, our Grade 6 teachers ms. Pauselli and ms. Crupi, our Grade 7 teachers ms. Savoie, mr. Comhaire, mr. Vinczeffy, mrs. Hildebrand, and Bersty, and our Grade 8 teachers ms. Savoie, ms. Briska, and mrs. Hildebrand who had to put up with us all year long, our Eas and supply teachers that had patience and were very kind to us, as well as the parent chaperones who took us on the Toronto trip.

We would also like to give a big thanks to madam Wyndells and mr. Palko who are both retiring this year and will be missed. madam Wyndells will be remembered for her musical talent and humorous sarcasm. mr. Palko will be remembered for his technical skills and abilities. Finally we would like to thank mrs. maclellan, mrs. Vinczeffy, and mrs. Saari for being our principals and vice principals.

Even though we are all excited to be leaving Sacred Heart we will miss the good times had here and the friends made. We are beginning a new journey to high school. We will be facing new challenges and meeting new friends. i’m sure a lot of us are scared but we will all have each other to support us.

We are excited to say CONGRaTUlaTiONS ClaSS OF 2013!

Thank you.

Centre graduates were all smiles at their graduation June 19, many celebrating a hard-won accomplishment carefully balanced with jobs, families, and other commitments throughout the course of their education.

Principal Darrin Head said many Wahsa students dealt with tragedy and difficulty over the past few months, extending thoughts and prayers for victims of last winter’s Wunnumin lake house fire, former NNEC director and board member Frank Beardy, and the Wahsa student and students’ relatives lost in the recent car accident near Slate Falls.

“We still have 14 proud graduates sitting before us,” he said. “it’s a testament to their endurance, their stamina and their fight. They just don’t give up.”

Head highlighted the first husband-wife couple

graduating together since Wahsa was established, as Eliezar and Janey mcKay sat side by side on the stage.

NNEC director of education Norma Kejick said watching the graduates walk into the ceremony made her smile.

“and, to truly feel the warmth that i’m feeling right now in my heart, knowing the sacrifices each of you made to get where you are today, to sit up there on stage in front of all of us,” she added.

Kejick said she was proud of each student, knowing it takes a lot of dedication and commitment to go through personal struggles while pursuing an education.

Stan Beardy, Ontario Regional Chief, said statistics show only 50 per cent of First Nations people have a high school education, 17 per cent have college, and seven per cent have some university.

He said the only thing that holds First Nations people back is how they

see themselves.“it’s very encouraging

to see these graduates,” he said. “Every time we make progress as First Nations people it’s for the benefit of the whole country.”

NaN Deputy Grand Chief alvin Fiddler said it takes a lot of work to graduate, not just as individuals but as families, acknowledging family members who supported students along the way.

“you have the potential to be leaders in your community and be the leaders of this country,” municipal councillor Doug Squires told graduates. “Take that dream and never lose sight of it. When you have the ability to dream there is nothing you cannot achieve.”

Valedictorian Della mushquash said each student had a different story and determination that brought them to graduation day.

“No matter what ups and downs we’ve been through we are stronger people for living through it, dealing with it, and now making the best of it by having obtained a greater education,” she said. Valedictorian Della Mushquash addresses fellow graduates and the gathered audience.

GOOD afternoon parents, family, and friends. i am

thrilled to be moving on to high school, a new step in life.

Today as we leave elementary school and enter a new and exciting environment, we all remember something special that

made us who we are today. Some of us will go one way, and others will go another, but at the end of the journey, we will always have memories of this school and Hudson school, like skiing, track and field, and our Toronto trip.

Through fun and games we’ve had, it’s hard to believe that we have learned so

much over the years. For one thing don’t skip or be late for school. it is important that we as young adults realize that this isn’t the end, but the mere beginning. From here on out what you do will impact your future greatly.

Nelson mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to

change the world.”i’d like to thank

all my teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 8, especially mr. Kejick and mr. Korbanik for these great years i’ve had here. and i’d like to thank all my classmates for being kind, generous, and being good friends to me. Farewell and good luck to my fellow classmates.

SEVEN Senior K i n d e r g a r t e n students and ten

Grade Eight students from Obishikokaang Elementary School in Frenchman’s Head graduated June 20, receiving diplomas and throwing their caps in the air in front of a large crowd of friends, family, and community members.

Principal mila morris led the crowd in a round of applause for all graduates, extending her wishes for continued success.

Patrick Strang, Queen Elizabeth District High School graduate and guest speaker, counseled students to continue their education, make friends, and join groups.

“Next year in high school you should try to avoid the temptation of skipping class,”

he advised Grade Eight grads.

“For parents, don’t be afraid to contact the school and find out how your kids are doing in school. See what their marks are,” he added.

“Get involved with good, positive things in school,” agreed Chris Southwind, master of ceremonies.

Southwind thanked Gordon Keewaycabo of Keewaycabo Bus lines for transporting children this year.

all year, he said, he watched his kids go up the hill, go to school and come back safely.

The process is different from how it used to be, he reflected, when students would go away in September and not come back until the end of the year.

Grade Eight valedictorian Drew Vincent said that no

matter where they end up, students will always have memories of going to school together.

He, too, encouraged

fellow graduates to take their education seriously.

“This isn’t the end, but the mere beginning,” he said, noting all

actions from here on out will impact students’ futures.

Vincent thanked all teachers from

Kindergarten to Grade 8 as well as his classmates, wishing farewell and good luck to fellow students.

QEDHS graduates celebrated June 21, plans for a new school building announced

Tim BrodyaSSociate editor

SEVENTy students crossed the stage to receive their

diplomas June 21 at the Queen Elizabeth District High School graduation ceremony.

Valedictorian Jared Binguis commented on graduating after receiving his diploma, “A lot of emotion. Excited, scared, happy. A sense of accomplishment.”

Asked about his time at QEDHS, he said, “I didn’t know what to expect, as I said in my speech. Coming from Hudson Public School with a population of maybe 80 to a school with 400 kids was an eye opener. It was a big transition for sure.”

Of his future plans, he said, “I want to get into political science or law, anything to do with

public speaking. I like public speaking.”

Jade Beaulne commented on graduation, time at QEDHS and future plans. “It feels amazing. It’s wonderful to finally be done high school and to move on. my time at this school flew by. you find out you can’t take high school for granted because your time there goes by so fast. I’m going to stay back a fifth year to prepare for a career in healthcare.”

Governor General medal recipient Adam Osmond said of graduating, and his time in high school, “Pretty exciting, nerve-wracking. Looking back, it was good. I learned a lot. I wouldn’t have wanted to go anywhere else. I had a good experience and made a lot of friends.”

Osmond plans to

attend the University of Waterloo to study civil engineering.

Migwin Orzechowska-Beardy, recipient of the OPC Principal’s Award for Student Leadership commented on graduating, her time at QEDHS and her future plans. “It feels amazing. I can’t believe I finally made it here. All those years of laughter and sadness and achievement and everything we’ve been through has just been amazing and I’m just so glad we’ve made it here. I plan to travel Europe and maybe get a bit of work and will be working this summer at the MNR so I can afford to go.”

Guest speaker Todd Nadon, co-owner of Johnny’s Fresh market, spoke to students about his life’s journey, its ups and downs, and

discovering the things that are important, customer service in business and family on a personal level. Nadon talked about coming up the ranks in the grocery store business to his and his wife’s decision to come to Sioux Lookout where he could spent more time with his family instead of accepting an offer to be manager of multiple stores elsewhere.

He encouraged students to work hard for what they want and really think about what is important to them.

Jared Binguis’s valedictory address was met with a chorus of applause.

QEDHS Principal Steve Poling commented, “Over the years our graduates have travelled a variety of paths to get here today.”

He thanked parents and the community for supporting graduates in their educational journeys and also thanked them for more than $50,000 in monetary awards which were presented to students.

He also talked about how the school has

molded students, helping teach them the value of hard work, perseverance and to be caring, tolerant people.

He encouraged students to go out into the world and make a difference.

K e e w a t i n - P a t r i c i a District School Board Superintendent of Education and in-coming Director of Education Sean monteith told those gathered what a privilege it was to be part of the graduation ceremony.

“I was told by my predecessor Jack

mcmaster, you will really like it. It’s not like any of the other grads because it’s very real.”

He promised next year to wear a gold tie to go along with the green shirt he wore.

He told those assembled in the packed gymnasium that graduation day represents a lot of hard work on the part of students and a lot of worry and encouragement from parents.

He told graduates, “If you made it this far, you can go a lot further.”

He added, “When you see intolerance against other people you act against it. When you see racism and bigotry to step in and when you see our most vulnerable and disenfranchised or isolated you step in and give them hope. A community that takes care of its most vulnerable and at risk is a community that includes everyone. That’s what QE stands for.”

monteith also brought big news, stating when he met with board trustees he established five major

priorities for the board, one of which is specific to Queen Elizabeth District High School.

“I want this community to know I will work tirelessly and relentlessly to secure the funding finally so this school can be rebuilt and a new school building created.”

That news was met with thunderous applause.

“The staff and community and kids make this school work. I can’t give you a time or a date but I promise you no school will acquire a greater attention from

me as your director than building a new building, a new school, than Queen Elizabeth District High School.”

The graduation ceremony also included a slideshow of students’ time at QEDHS and students’ baby pictures.

Diplomas, awards and bursaries were bestowed.

QEDHS Valedictorian addressJared Binguis

QedHs VAledictoriAn

GOOD afternoon e s t e e m e d guests, restless

graduates, proud parents, respected teachers and staff. (Put on glasses) yes, things are getting real.

i stand here in front of you today with a brief speech i have prepared. Thank you… Boozhoo. Before i start i’d like to point out the emergency exits just in case someone pulls the fire alarm. Safety first. Well i remember having a dream in Grade 9. No, no, not that dream, but seriously, it was a day dream. i dreamt of standing here on graduation day, and here i am now. Talk about déjà vu.

Well here we are class of ‘13, or for some who are superstitious, the class of bad luck. you know, class of ‘13 may not flow very well so I have some other unique proposals. For instance, maybe the class of someone’s test score, not mentioning any names, or how about the class of age 13, you know when we possessed so much passion to attend high school, not knowing we would be in for a bitter-sweet treat. But here we are now, all grown up and graduating together today with no major differences among us. Well, i guess maybe some of us wear these hats better than others.

Regardless of our class official title, we made it. We are proud of our accomplishments, and we are honoured to be the class of ‘13.

Now it was only a

short while ago we walked into the hallways of Queen Elizabeth not knowing what to expect in our freshmen year. We didn’t expect the school to be a rectangle, well, at least i didn’t until i started to clue in on the saying “Wanna lap?” We were so active and cool. We didn’t expect our sports to be in heated rivalries among other schools in the district. We didn’t expect green and gold day to be an actual activity people took a lot of pride in. you know, the morph suits, the face paint and the leggings, and it sure sucked when you were the odd ball wearing a shade of black or another school’s colour. We didn’t expect the food from Fair Convenience to be so addicting. Oh those calorie-loaded mozza Fries i tell you. We didn’t expect our cafeteria, an empty room with tables in it, to have some obsolete microwaves and some sketchy vending machines that sometimes decided to steal our money. We didn’t expect our teachers to be who they are: dedicated, caring, and motivational people who have watched us grow, watched our hair change from greasy to clean, and watched us mature over the past four years. and we sure didn’t expect to grow up and come together as the graduating class of 2013.

you see, Queen Elizabeth District High School was definitely an experience over the years; it was a roller coaster, or even an uphill struggle for

students in the district coming from as far north as Fort Severn, to the surrounding communities of Sioux lookout such as Pickle lake, alcona, and lac Seul. Throughout our four years here we have all changed in some way, or just found out who we really are. it was the best of times; it was the worst of times. There were sports games where we came out on top and games where we fell under pressure. There were times we aced tests and times we didn’t do so great. There were times high school was the best place to be, and times where it was the worse, but in the end we managed to persevere. it was an age of wisdom; it was an age of foolishness. We have made some mistakes, some more embarrassing and amusing than others. On some nights, we would finally decide to start a major assignment, which would be due the next day. i’d like to acknowledge the Facebook procrastination group which i believe we are all proud members

of. We had relationships, bombed assignments, and decided not to answer someone’s text messages. High school was a place where our emotions got the better of us, and where procrastination and technology have come into play to alter our grades by making them low, or high.

let’s not forget about the slang that has affected our language, for instance, yologymswag, unreal, nee, wheels, and of course, “that’s what she said.” Lessons were learned, friends were made and we have memories that will stay with us forever.

memories which consist of the picnic table gatherings, the senior sandwich society discussions, gym blast, prom, winter formal, spring fling, spirit days, the stories our teachers told, getting together on weekends, classroom conflicts, embarrassing moments, people’s hysterical laughs, NorWossa, OFSaa, outdoor Ed trips, court sport over nighters and

graduation today.We are currently

writing our own books. Some may not be the next best seller; however, what’s important is that we are writing these ourselves. Our lives have only been through a few chapters and the rest of our lives are still left to be written. Regardless of the path we follow, attending post-secondary school, joining the workforce, getting into trades or staying back another year for a victory lap, we will now determine our stories. We encountered some crossroads and whatever path you choose, i encourage you to write the next chapters of your stories, so that someday, when you look back you’ll have a satisfied smile, a sense of accomplishment, a feeling of pride. after all, you are Warriors.

We had help to get to where we are today. as we all know, it has taken a community to get us through high school. So on behalf of the graduating class of 2013, i would like to acknowledge a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has influenced and supported us to achieve the successes we have. i would like to thank our teachers and support staff for doing their jobs by accepting our desperate bribes and putting up with us, the administration for doing their job of calling home, and for their unforgettable speeches and seemingly odd metaphors. i would like to thank the members of the town of Sioux lookout for

supporting us through co-op opportunities, sports, and bursaries. i would like to thank the various first nations’ education councils and lac Seul education authority. Thanks to the custodial staff for being there no matter the mess, Fair Convenience for supplying mozza fries, Subway for being only a couple of blocks down the street. and our parents, boarding parents and caregivers, i can’t stress this enough, thank you for your never ending support and, of course, for waking us up and sending us to school every morning.

i don’t necessarily see this as a goodbye or a farewell, but rather a simple, see you later. in my language, bamaa miinawaa, since there’s no such word for goodbye. Remember where you came from, where you graduated and with whom. To quote Denis Waitley, “learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.”

Enjoy this moment, and keep moving forward class of ‘13; be punctual, devoted and responsible when it comes to hard work. Take chances, and make the most of your opportunities. Remember, as arthur Clarke once said, “The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them, into the impossible.”

Good luck, even though most of you wouldn’t need it. meegwetch.

JUNE 20 was graduation day for Grade 8 students

at Sioux mountain Public School and plenty of proud family members packed the school gymnasium to celebrate students’ accomplishments.

Before getting into graduation celebrations, Principal michael Boos

asked those in attendance to observe a moment of silence for victims of the fatal car accident near Slate Falls First Nation.

Victims of the tragedy were also remembered at Queen Elizabeth District High School and Sacred Heart School graduation ceremonies.

Boos said he was proud of students’ work and character and encouraged them

to continue to strive for excellence.

STUDENTS of the graduating classes of mrs. Craig and

mr. Dumonski, thank you for giving mya and myself, Chase, this opportunity to speak to everyone on your behalf.

Over the past year we have had plenty of great accomplishments with special events, sports, fundraisers and more. Especially with the student council, that has had many events for the students and staff. like

staff vs. students sports games and theme days.

We’ve had a lot of fun times and good memories. Friends fighting and arguing over pencils! People throwing coffee filters, filled with whipped cream at teachers for pie the teacher day! along with many, enjoying the simple game of manhunt in the forest.

We all know that going to high school can be scary, meeting new people, being in a strange building and not having all the people

you grew up with in all your classes. We will miss our teachers who have helped us get to this point, and for those of you who say you’re not gonna miss anything or are not nervous at all.. you’re liars! Even though high school comes with a lot of fears and that gross feeling of nervousness.

There are a lot of things to look forward to though, like sports, new teachers, meeting more people who have the

same interests as you, learning more, more freedom. Really you just gotta look forward to everything!

Knowing or not knowing what we want to do with our lives is common. Some want to stay in school, as in finishing high school, college or university. Some just want to get

a job like working at a gas station or fast food restaurant. Others would just like to simply be happy and

successful. With our crazy dreams of wanting to be architects or pro athletes or traveling the world. We all know that we have to work hard to achieve these dreams, and graduating elementary is just the beginning.

We’d like to thank each and every parent for coming out tonight. Without the support of our families, none of us would have come this far. We would also like to thank all of the faculty of Sioux mountain Public School

for giving each of us something to take into high school.

most of all we want to thank all our friends, for being there for support, laughs, and moments to remember. With our differences set aside, we’ve all joined together for this day. as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “What lies behind us, and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.”

Congratulations to the Graduates

Message from the Director of Education

Congratulations to all graduates of the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board. Attaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is an accomplishment that we celebrate and we want all of our graduates to know that we appreciate their contributions within our schools and wish each of you great success in years to come. The commitment from our dedicated staff has provided you with avenues for success, and the leadership and learning skills that you have developed will be of great

benefit to you for future education or employment. My experiences at Dryden High School so many years ago, have allowed me to pursue other educational experiences that have made my career very rewarding. I hope that our graduates are able to reflect on their experiences in KP and realize that the learning has provided paths in life that would not have occurred without the great learning in KP. I do hope that the KP21C initiative will help prepare you for our highly technical world. Keep in mind that our world will continue to change rapidly because of the technological changes, and it is our belief that you will be well prepared for change. Be open to pursuing jobs in the future that do not exist today, and challenge yourself to continuously learn in preparation for those unknown positions. That may sound difficult, but staying on the leading edge of technology and teamwork, you will be ready for the many jobs that will evolve over time. On behalf of the staff and trustees of the KPDSB, we thank you for your involvement within the board and wish you a happy and successful life ahead. Sincerely, Jack McMaster Director of Education
