UNIT NEWS
ClownsResponsibility, dependability, accountability, and commitment, theseare all words that we take part in as Masons and Shriners. We havethe responsibility to our family, to our Lodge, and to our units. I couldgo through and say the same thing about the other descriptive wordsabove. I was going to get on a big tangent about how we have a largeunit on paper and there are very few people that make the commitmentthat they signed on for. But that’s all I’m going to say about that. I’mgoing to go the other direction I’m going to tell you about that vehicleabove. It is the clown unit flagship for the Cincinnati Shrine Clownunit. It is or leaping Lena. It is by far one of the most interestingparade vehicles out there. For many years are old friend Huggy wasthe commander of the Lena. When Huggy left as the Director of theclown unit I had it set in my mind that I was going to sell this vehicle.Because of all the descriptive words above you must have to commandthis vehicle. But it was decided that we would give someone else achance to be the commander of the Lena. So, I approached one of ournewer clown. One thing about the Lena you must tow it, you must bevery familiar with this vehicle, and it can be very dangerous if put incontrol by the wrong person. Chuck Jeffers II or as we know I’m “HotRod” signed on for the job. And then the past couple years Hot Rodhas taken Lina to places that has not been before. He not only takesthe Lena up and Spins her around to the left and right he will set herup on two wheels and drive clearly Parade route on wheelie using thespeed brakes to control left and right turns. Oh, by the way did I alsotell you that Hot Rod is a Trustee that spends most of his days workingat the temple to keep things going. And that Hot Rod makes all theclown meetings. And many other meetings that he’s responsible for.All the mentioned words that I have above is Hot Rod and I’d like totake this opportunity to recognize Hot Rod and thank him foreverything he does for his clown unit and is temple. I would like toshare with you I’ll comment that was made about Hot Rod at theLoveland Fourth of July parade. “I don’t think the people of Lovelandhave stopped talking about you guys !!LOL! The big kids and littlekids couldn’t get enough of your amazing clown in the amazing yellowcar!! What a riot!...”Nancy-2018 Parade Coordinator
Directors StaffScott finally found his sister! We are proud he did not get the policeinvolved. To the boys in Florida get ready for the hurricane. Thanksto all who have turned out for the parades. John Miller is now home.He had a fractured femur and a knee replacement. It has been a longhot summer. Hope to see everyone at the Reds Shrine/Mason day, andalso at the Potentates Ball. Antique CaravanIt has been one “hot-hot” parade season, the Caravan has a few“larger than most” unit members, that barely made it through theJuly 4th holiday parades, by the Norwood and Owensville parade,Rod, Alex, Corey and Gary had all slimmed down to under 335 lbs.Every day, our Shriners Hospital here in Cincinnati is changing thelives through caring for kids. Our patients receive expert carecentered around their needs – physical, mental and emotional. Ourinnovative research and teaching programs at the Cincinnati hospitalhelp us carry our mission even further. It has been an emotionalsummer for Shriners, as we had some “ugly” discussions at Imperialabout our hospital system. Let’s neverforget we are a fraternity based on fun,fe l lowship and Masonic pr inc ip les ofbrother ly love, t ruth and re l ief . Let’scontinue to support our hospital systemwith time, talent and means, as our creedcalls for. Gary
Shrine Golf LeagueGreetings Nobles and friends. The Syrian Shrine Golf League isfinally in full “swing.” Mother nature has been pretty kind to ussince the very damp spring. We’ve had some great golf weather anda golf course that is in excellent shape for us to get all the pars andbirdies we can handle. We continue to invite golfers to join us.Singles, twosomes or foursomes. We can fit you in for a great nineholes on a terrific golf course. We usually play the East course, however, for a little variety, on certain dates we may get to play theWest or South nines. Thursday morning approx. 8:45 A.M. atGlenview Golf Course, at Sharon Rd. and Rt. 4 (Springfield Pike)easy access from I-275. We are usually finished around 11:30/12:00,plenty of time to get home and check on how well the wife is handlingthe yard work. Remember, it takes longer to learn to be a goodgolfer than it does to become a brain surgeon. On the other hand, you don’t get to ride around on a cart, drink beer, and eat hot dogswhen you are performing brain surgery! One more. HAZARDSATTRACT; fairways repel. Nobles, keep on swinging.Dick Manifold
Mini RacersThis summer has found all of us busy juggling schedules betweenwork, family, vacations and trying to fit in some of that so called“leisure “ time. Now we’ve had to squeeze into that time to work onand maintain our cars for a busy stretch of the parade season. Unionallowed for a lot of racing and maneuvering. A great time was hadover the 3 parade 4th of July which included our Illustrious GregPelfrey driving (?) the big orange! Owensville was fun for all.Members are staying actively involved with other units/groupspromoting good will and friendship amongst all. We also welcomedour newest member, Mike Schneider. If you’re interested in the MiniRacers, please contact us. We welcome anyone in an active orsupportive role. God bless the Divan, nobles, friends and families.Mike Miles

UNIT NEWS
Hospital HostsGreetings Nobles and friends. The Syrian Shrine Hospital Hosts Unitcontinues to dedicate itself to assisting in every way the volunteer functionsat our Shriners Hospital for Children. This Unit meets every first andthird Wednesday each month, 9:30 A.M. in the hospital Board Room. Weinvite any Noble who would like to join us and contribute a day or two ormore, volunteering at this wonderful institution. Check us out. A majorfunction of this Unit was put to the test this past month. Hospital Tours. We conducted tours for the visitors of the National Convention of theDaughters of the Nile, held here in Cincinnati. Over the two-week period, approximately 300/400 members visited the hospital. The ladies werevery impressed with the facility and the tours. This dedicated ShrineWomen’s organization has donated approximately 72 million dollars toShrine Hospitals across the country. Thanks to Betty Whitacre, Daughtersof The Nile, the Hosts tour guides, and their leader, Al Tucker for handlingthis major undertaking. During this time the Hosts continued to handlethe usual unit functions of transporting patients/parents, delivering thehospital mail, assisting OPD, etc. Of note, since there seems to be someuncertainty as to how this hospital will be functioning, as we now knowit, in the future, the Hospital Hosts Unit will continue to support thishospital, regardless of whatever the Imperial Board decides. Reminder, the Hosts Unit picnic is scheduled for August 22. Get reservations inASAP. Then there’s the one about Mildred, the church gossip and self-appointed monitor of the church’s morals, kept sticking her nose into otherpeople’s business. Several members did not approve of her activities butfeared her enough to maintain their silence & distance. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholicafter she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town’s only bar oneafternoon. She emphatically told Frank (and several others), that everyoneseeing it there would know what he was doing! Frank, being a man of fewwords, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. Laterthat evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred’s homeand left it there all night….Pay backs are tough but you gotta love Frank! My friends, Live life…laugh often…love much and keep on smiling.Dick Manifold-Unit Director
Ishtar Temple No. 54Daughters of the Nile …Our Supreme Session is over!! And we were excitedto see our first ever Cincinnati/and Ohio Supreme Queen Shirley Henleyinstalled – now her work begins as she travels to each Temple and eachShrine Hospital in the United Stated and Canada – all from the middle ofJuly through February!!! We couldn’t have done this without the help ofso many volunteers, all willing to step in and help as needed. And theShriners!!! What can I say – thanks to the leadership of Ill. Sir GregPelfrey and the help of Ill. Sir Gary Caudill, more than 600 visitors wereable to check out our Shrine Burns Hospital. The Shriners and the HospitalHosts went over and beyond the call of duty to accomplish this – and itwas appreciated by all our visitors. It was a privilege to have theImperial Potentate and Imperial Chief Rabban with us during theconvention and our Shrine Officers took good care of these dignitaries.Thank you to everyone who helped make the Supreme Session in Cincinnatia memorable one for our members and all our visitors.God is good!
