THINKING GREEN IN MARCH
Despite the extended winter season, we did our best to bring a little green indoors this month with Spring-themed activities and back-to-back St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. However, outdoors it was another story altogether. I am that sure you have all heard the expression “in like a lion, out like a lamb” which is used to describe the month of March. While this may have been true in previous years, we’ve seen no signs of lambs this month with all the cold weather, heavy winds and rains. And can you believe that we had a snowstorm (one of the many this year) on the first day of Spring, March 20? If this weather hasn’t been wild enough for you folks, our local weather forecasters predict an unseasonably cool April as well.
Nonetheless, we hope that you stayed warm indoors and enjoyed our green-themed celebrations this month. And do not worry⎯in just a few weeks we will be taking our lawn chairs out of storage so that you can start working on your lovely tans during the warmer days ahead.
Until then…Happy Spring and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Sláinte, Margaret

SPRING 2016 THE LOREM IPSUMS
We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in style this year with two days of events that incorporated Ireland’s history, culture, music and food. On Thursday, March 15, local historian and Island favorite, Pat Salmon, conducted a presentation entitled The Irish of Staten Island in the Lane Theater. Pat’s lecture and accompanying slides were so interesting that many of our ardent bingo players missed the day’s game because they stayed until the end of Pat’s presentation (which went a half hour over the usual allotted time). The following morning, Margaret conducted an Armchair Travel class for a bunch of interested folks who gathered in the Computer Room. She took residents on a journey through Ireland and then shared photos from her recent trip to the Emerald Isle. After lunch, the residents proceeded to the Shores Game Room in order to listen to Celtic Reel—a wonderful duet who has been performing traditional Irish music at Island Shores for the past several years. And while these musicians were serenading our folks, the Activities staff served a variety of Irish beers and cheeses to all. We hoped that you enjoyed Island’s Irish celebration this month! And may you have the ‘luck of the Irish’ throughout the remainder of the year.

SPRING 2016 THE LOREM IPSUMS
We had two lucky winners⎯residents’ Sandy T. and Carole O.⎯for last month’s Wedding Photo Contest. These savvy ladies guessed all of the eight couples whose pictures were displayed on a whiteboard before bingo for two weeks prior to the contest. And believe me, it was no easy feat guessing the identities of these lovely couples because most of their wedding photos were taken over 60 years ago. Congratulations Sandy and Carole! Each of our winners was awarded a beautiful handmade, crocheted blanket to keep warm through the rest of this unending cold season. If you would like to submit a photo for next month’s Wedding Photo Contest (round two folks!), please see Nancy in the Activities Department.

Troop 5289 of our local Girl Scouts visited Island Shores in early March to sell delicious Girl Scout Cookies to hungry staff and residents. The troop’s leader initially brought in three boxes thinking that this supply would be enough for their sale at Island Shores. But unsurprisingly, this poor mom had to run back out to her car several more times before the sale concluded. After the cookie sale, these lovely young girls offered to call a few Bingo games for our residents. However, because we had another event planned for the afternoon, the group promised to return again in the near future for a round or two of Bingo. These Girl Scouts rock!
GIFTED YOUNG FLUTIST PERFORMS AT ISLAND SHORES
Talented young f lut ist Ell ie Cohen performs for residents in the Shores Game Room on
February 10.
GIRL SCOUT COOKIE SALE WAS YUMMY!
On February 10, residents and staff were treated to a classical recital by the young and talented flutist Ellie Cohen. Ellie’s repertoire for her first recital at Island Shores included works by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn and Gossec⎯just to name a few. Her talented mom, who is an accomplished pianist and music director, accompanied Ellie. Ellie currently attends the Mark Twain Middle School for the Gifted and Talented in Brooklyn. But when she is not busy exceling at school, Ellie volunteers her time performing at various senior residences around New York area. We thank both mom and daughter for volunteering their time to perform at Island Shores.
The young Scouts from Troop 5289 conduct a cookie sale at Is land Shores In March.
