PROPHETIC PRE-ELECTION PHOTO FEATURES QUARTET OF WINNERS

LAKE BUTLER —Undefeated Union County Sheriff John Whitehead (right, in top picture)doesn't claim that every political candidate who attends his annual barbecue will be a winner,

but it apparently helped (left to right) U. S. Senator Lawton Chiles, Florida Attorney General

Robert Shevin, Secretary of State Dick Stone and Governor Reubin Askew. This picture was

taken at the barbecue, held just prior to the 1970 General Election in which the four candidatesregistered decisive victories. Also attending the annual barbecue were (left to right) Sheriff J. M."Buddy" Phillips of Suwannee County; Sheriff Jennings Murrhee of Clay County; SheriffWhitehead; Ed Yarbrough, former Sheriff of Baker County and second director of the FloridaSheriff's Bureau; an unidentified youth; Sheriff Harry Spradley of Columbia County; and

Harry Weaver, Executive Director of the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. The boys in front are all

from the Boys Ranch, and they do like sweet corn. (Top photo by Weston McDonald, Gaines-

THE SHERIFF'S STAR

YOU MIGHT SAYIT'S TRADITIONAL

NAPLES —The World Championship SwampBuggy Races (above) just are not run withanyone but Collier County Sheriff DougHendry as the Official Starter. And a swampbuggy race just isn't complete until theOfficial Starter has been given a mud bath(right). Consequently, Sheriff Hendry haslearned to take the dunking with a smile. He was also smiling when he got Gary Cooper-smith in T. G. Kelly's barber chair for ashave. Seems Coopersmith was in on the mudbath. Actually, Coopersmith was having hisswamp buggy beard shaved because someonesaid he disliked beards so much, he was will-ing to make a $500 donation to the Jayceesif the whiskers came off. Boys Ranch Success Story

Success stories are dime-a-dozen at the Florida Sheriffs

Boys Ranch, and this is just one of them. It's about Jerry Willard who grew up at the Boys Ranch,

and married Jeanne Schmutz, a girl who also grew up on the

Ranch as the daughter of two staff members, Mr. and Mrs.

John Schmutz.Jerry enlisted in the U. S. Air Force, served with

distinction in Viet Nam, returned to civilian life in 1970,and found a good job with Pitney-Bowes Corp.

Now he and Jeanne are living in Gainesville, and he

returns to the Ranch occasionally to service and repair

the Pitney-Bowes mailing equipment. (see cover photo).

INTERESTED WIVES FORM SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT AUXILIARY

CLEARWATER —During an evaluation of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department, SheriffDon Genung found out the wives of deputy sheriffs are like other wives —they want to know

what their husbands are doing. So four days were set aside for wives and female employees tomeet with the Sheriff and others in the Department to learn more about the county jail, crimecomputers, and some of the problems of the Sheriff's Department. During these meetings thewomen expressed a desire to help with such crime prevention projects as the Florida SheriffsBoys Ranch and Girls Villa, the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Pinellas County, the JuniorDeputy program and the Boys Clubs of America. From these discussions sprang the idea foran auxiliary to the Sheriff's Department.
