Resurrection!

Even if you can’t come into the church yet, come over and drive by on Wildwood and

Highland! It’s Easter over here! Resurrection! Sue Burkhard and I agreed to meet and

transplant all our Easter lilies outside. (She did the most work by far. I transplanted about

three. I fear my days of crawling around in a garden may be over.) But COGS is abloom!

Resurrection. We celebrate it every year - once a year. But God’s truth is, we

will always be granted resurrection, whenever we need it - if we ask for it and trust in it.

Whether resurrection happens in nature or in our hearts, it is real. And right about now,

with all that is going on - with the corona virus - with the fear that leads to anger and hate -

we need to just stop - pause - and look around us. Look at the gifts that God has given to

us. Look at our beautiful spring and summer. Isn’t it nice to have fewer cars on the road to

pollute our air? It seems as if there are even more birds singing for us as dawn breaks every

day. Brad walks Max past Connie Parent’s house all the time. There’s an entire community

acting out a social drama every day in the brick retaining wall outside her house! Oh! If we

could only speak chipmunk! I’m seeing more squirrels and bunnies all over the place. It’s as

if we’ve gotten out of Nature’s way and God gave Nature the “go ahead.”

Yes, things are changing. They’re going to change even more — in nature and in society.

We need to remember, now more than ever, that God loves us and cares for us - all of us.

We are an important part of God’s creation, each of us. We are intended to be part of God’s

creation, part of God’s world, living our lives as functioning, contributing parts of God’s

plan. Sometimes/often God’s plan may not be clear to us. Well, God is God and we’re not.

Sometimes it’s hard for us to understand that we don’t need to understand everything. We

can’t understand everything. We just need to love God and each other. And have faith that

God loves us. That is the promise. That God will always love us.

Heard that before? Sound familiar? Well, our problem is, we keep forgetting that God

loves us. Do we live as if we are beloved by God? Do we live as if we hold the greatest gift

ever? Do we take God’s love seriously? Perhaps it’s time to do that.

Blessings!

Deacon Carl’s Corner

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore, we will not fear… Psalm 46:1-2

I think most of us love this verse and would not mind finding it attached to our refrigerator, or someplace where we would see it the first thing in the morning or even before we go to bed. We have been surrounded by scary events, predictions, news reports and so much more. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble.

But we really should keep reading – at least through verse 5:

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of the city;[a] it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.

With everything going on in your life, all the turmoil, the “troubled waters” not only around us physically but also in our souls, take a few minutes and look at these powerful verses and know that God is a “Help, one that is always near and we cannot find or desire one who is better.” He is the rock that protects and shields us. He is the source of peace which he provides.

The God of the universe is our refuge and strength…. May His peace surround you and give you rest.

Deacon Carl

are doing. We want to thank you all for continuing

to support Good Shepherd by mailing in your

pledges.

Blessings,

Mother Susan and Deacon Carl

THE FOOD PANTRY

We have changed our approach for collecting food

donations for the Pitman Food Pantry. Each week we will

be collecting a different food item. We will announce the

upcoming needed food item each week in the trifold. Also

we will have a monthly list here in the Crook.

7/4 & 5 – Tuna

7/11 & 12 – Cereal

7/18 & 19 – Canned Ravioli

7/25 & 26 – Jelly

All donations are greatly appreciated and accepted.

Since we are not at the church on the weekends you

could bring your donations directly to the pantry or Sue

Burkhard's house. Pantry hours - Tuesdays 6 to 7,

Wednesdays 4 to 5, Thursdays 12 to 1.

Altar Flowers & Sanctuary Candle

If you are interested in funding Altar Flowers or

the Sanctuary Candle in memory of someone or in

thanksgiving for someone, the forms are in the

Parish Hall, on the back wall on the Bulletin Board

near the kitchen. Please fill out the appropriate

form with your information for your desired date,

as long as it is available, on the appropriate chart

on the bulletin board. Please put your completed

form in Parish Administrator’s mailbox or under

her office door.

We do not have flowers during Advent or Lent.

The Sanctuary Candle is available year round.

PICTURES!

Let’s get in the habit of taking pictures of

everything around here! Pictures of Sunday School,

meetings, even of events at services if you can be

surreptitious! Please identify who is in each photo

and what the event is. Thank you!

Maryanne has received some great pics from

people. Keep ‘em coming!

Once we get back Save your spare change

for the SQUIRRELS’ NESTS! They are in the back of

the Church and in the Parish Hall

OUTREACH

We hope that everyone is staying in and safe and healthy during this difficult time of quarantine and pandemic. Please do NOT drop off any clothing for Camden donations until we notify you that we are taking them again. St. Wilfrid’s clinic in Camden is not open or accepting donations of any sort at this time. We do not have the space to store clothing until we have outlets to donate them to again. We will have to dispose of anything that is left on our porch. We will notify everyone when things open up again. We can rest assured that clothing and shoes will be needed even more when the quarantine lifts.

Thanks so much!

Deacon Carl and Ellie Dunn

THURSDAY STUDY GROUP

This group meets every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. on Zoom (ID 860 0220 4298). No password is required.

We are beginning a new study on May 21

called Following the Mystics Beyond the Narrow

Gate. This is a DVD series presented by Fr; Richard

Rohr and Dr. James Finley.

In this series we will learn about the history of the mystics

through the ages, including every major religion. We will

also be introduced to the mothers and fathers who have

gone before us, having attained a oneness with God.

If interested, please send Mel Caron your email so that

materials can be sent prior to the class –

[email protected].

PITMAN FOOD PANTRY

In service to the greater community, Jenn Harrington continues to accept and deliver donations for the Pitman Food Pantry, whose needs have risen greatly due to the pandemic. Those who live close to Jenn can drop off at her house at 7 Trafalger Court in Sewell. If you live closer to Church, you may also leave donated food at Beth Portocalis' house at 301 Washington Avenue in Pitman. You may also leave donated items at the Pantry during their operational hours. (30 North Broadway, Pitman Tuesdays from 5:30 - 7:00 pm; Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5:00 pm; and Thursdays from 11:30 - 1:00 pm)

Please Be Considerate of Our Neighbors!

We are so glad you're here! But when you park near

the church, please be considerate of our neighbors

and make sure you have fully cleared their driveways.

Thank you!

CONTEMPLATIVE GROUP We are meeting every Wednesday at 10 a.m. on Zoom (ID 813 1796 4254), No password is required. We begin with 20 minutes of silent meditation followed by a teaching and discussion. This week (May 20) we begin a new series on the Enneagram.

The Enneagram is a system of personality typing that describes patterns in how people conceptualize the world and manage their emotions. It describes nine different types and maps each on a nine-pointed diagram which helps to illustrate how the types relate to one another.

According to the Enneagram, every personality has a certain world view and looks at the world through their own lens or filter. This makes it possible to explain why people behave in certain ways.

We will be using a series by Fr. Richard Rohr and Russ Hudson. This will be an introductory to the Enneagram, which hopefully will enable participants to further their work in their spiritual journey.

If interested, please send Mel Caron your email so that materials can be sent prior to the class - [email protected].

FAMILIES IN NEED FUND

As the CoViD pandemic lingers on, we are each

facing difficult times; people losing their jobs,

children needing to be home-schooled (some

without computers), families trying to decide

whether to buy groceries or pay the

rent/mortgage, social isolation, and so on. Many

of you are experiencing anxiety over loved ones

you can’t visit with. Our Church is more than a

building we visit once a week, it is us, the people

of Church of Good Shepherd, the people of God.

We are on a spiritual journey together, no

matter where we start from, led by the Holy

Spirit. Even though we can’t be together

physically for the time being, we are always

there for each other spiritually.

The Church had a "Families In Need" Fund, and the Vestry has re-opened this dedicated fund given the crisis we are currently facing. If you find yourself in need, please reach out confidentially to Deacon Carl at 609-868-7102 or Mother Susan at 732-759-4358, and they will do everything within the financial abilities of this Fund to help.

Conversely, the Vestry is asking each of us as members of the Good Shepherd family to consider the financial needs of other Church members and possibly assist those who are in need by making a contribution to this Fund. Our Church has always been known for our outreach, but these times of uncertainty are when we most need to help those within our Church family with hardships. If you would like to donate to this fund, simply make a check payable to “Church of The Good Shepherd” and mark it “Families In Need Fund” and we will put it to good use as Jesus guides us. All donated funds will only be used for the purpose of helping other parishioners.

As always, we thank you for your generosity and we will continue to pray for our collective health, welfare and safety, and look forward to the time when we can safely worship and fellowship together again at Good Shepherd.

NEW EVENING STUDY!

Join Mel and Fr. Don Caron for a 7-week

study called “Living the Questions.” This

program offers a flexible format with DVD

presentations and group discussions. The DVD

features today’s leading religious voices in

theology and scripture.

We begin meeting on Wednesday, May 27,

7-8:30 p.m. on Zoom. The ID for the

meeting is 870 6705 8188. No password is

required. Each session is free-standing so you

can join for one or all of the sessions. This is a

recurring meeting, so put this ID in a safe

location (like under your phone contacts!)

We are offering this as a combined class

between St. David’s in Cranbury and Good

Shepherd in Pitman. Feel free to invite your

friends from other churches to join us

too! You can contact Mel at
