The Sewing Machine Buzz By Jeff Vogel One could conclude that after writing dozens of these articles it would become easier, however, it is a chore I put off to the very last deadline. I rely upon my qualified staff to cover my shortcomings, like “planning and scheduling.” Our calendar is already filled through December this year. My right hand person, Heather, has accepted a position with BERNINA to be a traveling educator for 2015. I am totally supportive of this endeavor and she, in turn, will continue to work part time at Hi Fashion. I am so proud of her and lucky to have any time she can give us. Our new mother, Trista, is expected back to work in April. Her help with new owner classes and serger support will be greatly welcomed. I hired Julie to help with sales and classes; she brings quilting skills and is learning the sewing machine lines. BERNINA is introducing an upgraded 7 series line; the NEW 790, 770, and 740 will be in the store in April. They feature a 10” work space to the right of the needle and a huge bobbin capacity. It’s time to trade up those 180’s and 440’s for more room and new features that will improve your sewing, quilting or embroidery skills with a touch of a button. We all love the 7 Series and the new enhancements make these models even better. I carry the best three brands of machines made, and I strive to fit you with the best model for your needs and price point. Every machine I sell comes with lessons--even the “previously loved” machines for under $100. I have a service department that strives to have your machine finished within 5 days. One could conclude that after writing dozens of these articles it would become easier, however, it is a chore I put off to the very last deadline.

BERNINA is introducing an upgraded 7 series line; the NEW

790, 770, and 740 will be in the store in April.

Although this winter has been pretty mild so far in Grand Junction, spring is just around the corner. I wonder if March will come in like a lion and go out like a lamb? I am just thankful we are not located on the eastern half of the United States; they are experiencing winter!

As many of you know, we have had a few changes around the store since the last newsletter.Trista will be back from maternity leave. Serging Through the Snow… See how I managed to work the season into this? Only it seems we’re having summer already! Who can figure this weather out?

In my service column I didn’t want anyone who owns a serger to think I was neglecting them. A serger is a great tool to have in your sewing arsenal. Everyone should have one. It’s the sports car of sewing, small and fast. A serger can expand what you can do, and do it faster. It doesn’t limit your creativity, rather it expands it. There are even quilt patterns that can be made entirely with a serger.

90% of all problems with sergers come from threading mistakes. If your stitch isn’t right odds are you need to rethread it. I suggest if you are new to serging, or have a new serger you’re not 100% familiar with, thread it, unthread it, thread it (repeat, repeat). Practice, practice, practice. Do this before starting any projects. It will cut down your frustration level in the future.

The other 10% of serger problems come from trying to “help” the fabric. Be One With Your Machine. Let the feed dogs do their job. Don’t bend, jerk, pull, push, or do sudden turns with your fabric. Just guide it through. Bending the needles in a serger, at these high speeds, can cause havoc.

Maintenance is similar to a sewing machine with one notable difference. I tell you NOT to use canned air on a sewing machine. But on a serger it’s fine. After every project, open the front door and the left door (most machines have one) and blow all that lint out. Then oil the upper looper bar, put in new needles, and you’re good to go. If you’re not sure on cleaning and oiling please come see me.

teCh Corner By Brian Davis

Some other serger tips:

Make sure your needles are inserted all the way up. We sell a needle holder that makes this much easier.

Change needles after every project. You’re going much faster, so there’s more friction to dull them.

Remove pins! The knife blades really don’t like them. You may think you can keep ahead pulling pins, but these machine move fast!

Practice threading with different colored threads. Learn which tension control affects what part of your stitch.

Use thread designed for a serger. You’ll get better results.

Good tweezers are a must! We sell, what I think are, the best ones. They are not expensive and a great tool when doing your threading.

Have fun with your serger!
