The Sewing Machine Buzz By Jeff Vogel Another year is upon us, and as we fill in our calendar and plan our events and promotions for 2013, I am reminded how much we have accomplished in twelve months. As a tribute to the late Andy Rooney, here is a short summary of a typical year: 808 machine tune ups, 355 machine sales, 1,252 bolts of fabric purchased, 207 classes taught, 4 major events, 37 rolls of cash register tape used, 3 vacuum cleaner belts and hundreds of happy customers. Do you ever wonder what happens to those empty fabric winders? Some actually get reused by the customers, but most just end up in the trash. We tried to recycle them but they are not a good candidate because they are comprised of two different types of cardboard. And, did you know that used machine needles work perfectly to hang a quilt on the wall; they don’t hurt the quilt and leave a only small hole in the drywall. What do you do with a zipper that doesn’t work any more? You bring it to Jeff to replace the slider. I’m worn out just thinking about all that a year entails! We have a big change in our Sew Savvy Club for 2013. Instead of monthly meetings, there will be four meetings held throughout the year, culminating with a Thank You party in December. There will be more membership privileges which include two free classes a year, being able to shop early on major sale events, 15% off kits every day, two “Sew-in” Fridays with lunch, special E-mail coupons about once a month, and special meeting day discounts. The feedback from current members has been very positive and they feel it is a good value at the $60 annual membership. Remember, any brand of machine is welcome in our club. Tech corner By Brian Davis

A Technological MarvelIf you haven’t had the chance to stop into the store and see the new BERNINA 7 Series machines, you should. As a technician I think these may be the best machines BERNINA has made in years. That’s saying a lot, I know, as BERNINA has made some fine machines over the years.

There’s lots of features that make the 7 Series unique. Here I’m just going to focus on one part, the NEW BERNINA 9 Hook.

Since the early days of sewing machines there have been two types of hook mechanisms; the oscillating hook (BERNINA calls theirs the CB Hook) which goes back and forth, and the rotary hook which goes around and around. There have been slight variations on these, like the bigger bobbin in the BERNINA 8 Series, but basically it’s been the same mechanics for about 100 years.

No longer!! BERNINA has invented something NEW! The BERNINA 9 Hook combines the best of both technologies. Here are the features:

• A central diver, which keeps the hook very steady. The 7 Series machines are quieter due to this! Really quiet!! Smooth as silk and a beautiful stitch. They even sound different from any sewing machine you’ve heard. It’s a cool sound! (OK, that’s a guy thing.)

• Operation is like a rotary hook. It allows for a stitch width of up to 9mm, at up to 1,000 stitches a minute! That may sound like another guy thing, but when you’re doing embroidery you’ll appreciate that speed.

• This bobbin is BIG! It holds 80% more thread than BERNINA’S standard bobbins. It even holds more than the 8 Series bobbin! You’ll think you can sew forever. (You can’t.) And it goes in only one way.

• The hook comes out like any of the BERNINA CB hook machines. This makes cleaning the hook area a snap. And the hook is self oiling. We fill a reservoir with oil during your annual tune up and you leave it alone for a year. Just wipe out the hook area after every couple of bobbin fulls. The hook is easy to align and put back in the machine. Simple.

• BERNINA used only the highest quality materials on this hook. Even sewing with the worst quality thread (don’t!) it’s almost impossible to jam this hook.

• No special threading of the bobbin is required to do embroidery or decorative stitches. You thread the bobbin one way...and go! No smoke or mirrors!

Precise, simple, strong, fast, and still Swiss made. The BERNINA 9 Hook has got it all. Watch a video about this amazing NEW sewing invention at http://www.bernina.com/en-US/Company/Innovation-us/9-Hook-us. Then come in for a demo of any of the three 7 Series machines. Because the 9 Hook is just part of what makes the 7 Series machines fantastic. Better yet, sit down here and take one for a spin! You’ll LOVE this machine!!!

BERNINA has done it again!
