GOSPEL Luke 11:1-13 HOMILY CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow through “and became man”) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

As you are aware, the third and final phase of our Cathedral Campaign for a

Second Century is upon us. This three year campaign has brought major improvements and repairs to our Cathedral Campus and now it is time to make preparations for cutting down the cloud. Several parishioners continue to fulfill their three-year pledges and we are on track for removing the cloud this fall.

Currently we are making provisions for temporary sound and lighting as those elements are contained within the cloud. We are also planning on cutting back the sanctuary a bit so as to increase seating in the Cathedral and allow the Word of God to be proclaimed and the priest to preach without 1/4 of the congregation behind his back. We will be making adjustments to the historic marble pulpit and using it once again soon.

The reality is that removing the cloud and creating more room for people in the pews will create a ripple effect with other elements in the church. We will have to live with that reality until funds are available to restore permanent lighting, permanent sound system, pews, flooring, altar, etc. I mention this simply by way of asking for your patience as we move through this process.

We have included three different floor plans in today’s bulletin. Please look them over and consider the pros and cons of each. I will be leading an information session on the potential renovation of our sanctuary on Sunday, August 7th at 10:00 am and again on Sunday, August 21st at 10:10 a.m. Please plan on attending one of those information sessions. I have also asked Robert Carr to be present for these meetings to discuss the challenges we face regarding the death of our gallery organ (the organ located in the loft).

As we look forward to the further beautification of our Cathedral Church, I entrust this process to the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Darrin Connall Rector

Jesus is describing God’s immeasurable generosity when

He says in today’s Gospel, “Whoever asks, receives;

whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is admitted.” But it

should also be the description of us as Christian stewards –

those seeking to follow Christ by using our gifts in service

to others.

Sewer Problems

This past week workers were called to repair a significant failure of the sewer pipe leading from the rectory to the main sewer line. The terra cotta pipe installed over 100 years ago was blocked and crooked. Water backed up into the basement of the rectory and the whole thing was quite a mess. Some initial temporary repairs were able to be made which has everything flowing again properly. However, a more permanent solution is needed and will be completed this week which will consist of lining the old terra cotta pipe with new plastic liner. This unforeseen repair is estimated to cost $15,000.00 and is a reminder of the significant amount of financial resources it takes to keep our Cathedral Campus running smoothly.

Potential Floor Plans

The following three floor plans are being considered as options for the configuration of our sanctuary once the cloud is removed:

Scriptural Reflection

July 24, 2016 — Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gn 18: 20-23; Ps 138: 1-3. 6-8; Col 2: 12-14; Lk 11: 1-13

St. Paul advised us to pray constantly. In Today’s Gospel, Jesus in effect tells us the same thing. It is difficult for us to underestimate the power of prayer. An active and consistent prayer life is a key factor in being a good steward.

St. Teresa of Avila had this to say about prayer: “The most potent and acceptable prayer is the prayer that leaves the best effects. I do not mean it must immediately fill the soul with desire… The best effects are those which are followed by actions…when the soul not only desires the honor of God, but really strives for it.”

Her point is that prayer requires action. That is the same conclusion we might draw about stewardship as a way of life. Adding the phrase “as a way of life” implies that it is more than an attitude. It is something that should fill every moment of every day for us.

That is what Jesus is trying to communicate to us — that we must be consistent and persevere in prayer. Our lives should reflect our ongoing prayer. You might say how we live our lives is a living prayer. That is what the Lord wants from us. As the Lord advises us, “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
