Environment Today

19th century

American immigrants sent a picture of their

new hometown which looks like this.

Page 4: The scope of environmental problem

Environment Today

These smokestacks were a point of pride

because it implies that cities was

prospering economically.

“It was a small price to pay

for economic progress…..”

Environment Today

20th century

Industrialization spread

Population increased

Resources become scarce

Page 6: The scope of environmental problem

Environment Today

Because of INDUSTRIALIZATION

Page 7: The scope of environmental problem

What is earth?

A single ecosystem, consisting of a

community of

animals, plants, microorganisms, and the

like.

Page 8: The scope of environmental problem

Pope John Paul II

“We cannot interfere in one area of the

ecosystem without paying due attention

both to the consequences of such

interference in other areas and to the well-

being of future generations”

-The Ecological Crisis: A Common

Responsibility

Page 9: The scope of environmental problem

Lack of attention….

Page 10: The scope of environmental problem

Lack of attention…

Leads to…..

Page 11: The scope of environmental problem

Greenhouse effect

a process by which thermal radiation from

a planetary surface is absorbed by

atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-

radiated in all directions.

Depletes the ozone layer leading to

GLOBAL WARMING

Page 12: The scope of environmental problem

GLOBAL WARMING

Page 13: The scope of environmental problem

Pope John Paul II says

Ecological crisis is the result of profound

DISRESPECT FOR LIFE

Without respect for human dignity and for

God’s creation, there is no way out of this

crisis.

Page 14: The scope of environmental problem

American bishops say

“A society that will easily dispose of

God’s good earth will also find

disposing of people easy as well.”

LAND

Used to grow food

But now, subject to:

Page 18: The scope of environmental problem

Waterlogging

Saturation of soil with water

Page 19: The scope of environmental problem

Salinization

a build up of salts in soil, eventually to

toxic levels for plants.

Page 20: The scope of environmental problem

Soil Erosion

a natural process but soon becomes a

problem when human activity causes it to

occur much faster than under natural

conditions.

Page 21: The scope of environmental problem

Status today:

Farm land turned into desert, subdivisions

Page 22: The scope of environmental problem

Use of rainforest

Serve as home for plant and animal

species

Medicines to be derived from tropical

species

Helps in absorption and neutralization of

greenhouse gases

Helps in the improvement of nutrients of

vegetation

Page 23: The scope of environmental problem

With the loss of

rainforests, many will

suffer.

Lives of everyone would

be endangered.

WATER

Page 25: The scope of environmental problem

Facts on water

consumption today

Over 1 billion people lack access to

clean water in developing countries.

Use of unsafe water lead to over 80%

diseases which kills more than 25,000

people everyday ( UN & WHO)

Page 26: The scope of environmental problem

Contamination of water

Industrial pollutants are major factor of

the contamination of world’s water supply

Underground tanks’ leak and seep into

ground water

Pesticides seep into ground, run off with

rain then contaminates groundwater and

nearby streams and rivers

Page 27: The scope of environmental problem

Contamination of water

Other sources of water pollution:

Excess organic matter

Thermal pollution

Infectious organisms

Page 28: The scope of environmental problem

Facts on water pollution:

Oceans provide habitat for aquatic

creatures, food and drinkable water for

humans.

But oceans are not immune from

pollution…..

Page 29: The scope of environmental problem

Facts on water pollution 10% of world’s coral reefs have been

completely destroyed; Philippines has only 5% remaining coral reefs which are in good condition.

Cruise ships generates water pollution for producing a big number of waste

Every summer, nutrient pollution creates a dead zone

Every year, over 300,000 dolphins, porpoises, and whales die because of entanglement in fishing nets

Page 30: The scope of environmental problem

God created the

earth to nurture

not to destroy.
