ART LECTUREMANET at the FRICK

with Professor Thomas Germano Friday, December 13 at 11:00 AM

Considered the father of Impressionism, Édouard Manet was a revolutionary artist, recognized in his time. Drawing upon Japanese art, Titian, Velázquez, Frans Hals and Goya, Manet’s work has become synonymous with modernism, and this is exemplified in iconic works such as Olympia (1862–63), Luncheon

on the Grass (1863) and A Bar at the Folies Bergere (1882). Manet: Three Paintings from the Norton Simon Museum, on exhibit at The Frick, October 16, 2019 to January 5, 2020, will be discussed in relation to Manet’s broader body of works and Impressionism.
