THE RURAL DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL CH ORUS HELD UNDER THE AUSPICES OF NORTHERN STATES TEACHERS COLLEGE, APR, 23, 1926 In January, 1925, the Public School Music De- partment of the Northern State Teachers College, on the request of the Rural Department, introduced systematic work in music in seven of the Rural Demonstration schools . In the fall of 1925, six more schools we re added and in January 1926, two more. All of the fifteen Demonstration Schools now have music every day for a period of fifteen minutes, the work being done by student teachers supervised by Miss Cleva J. Carson, head of the Department of Public School Music. Music had not previously been systematically taught in all of these schools and many obstacl es were encountered such as a large percent of mono- tones, poor tone quality and the absence of books of anv kind to be used in a music class. Never- theless, music went bravely on until a great per- cent of the out-of-tune voices were correcte d, the tone quali ty became lighter and the children be- gan to s ing the longer songs such as folk songs of many countr ies instead of the shorter songs that it was n ecessary to teach at first. In March, 1926, ninety children responded to the invitation to sing together as a chorus for the Mid-year Educational Conefrence held at Northern State Teachers Coll ege at that time. This was the first att empt of this kind with the Demonstra- tion Schools associated with the Teachers College and also the first chorus of its kind in South Da- R eprinted fr om the s. D. E. A. Very few s uch choruses have been attempt- ed in the United States as they are possible only in Ohio and the eastern states where there is state and county supervi sion of musi c. The warm reception the childr en recei ved at the first chorus a ttempted , made th em eager for the big concert held in Aberdeen on April 23 in con- n ect ion with the Rural Demonstration School Rally Day on which day they also had their music memory contest. If "Music for every child and every ch ild for music" is to become a r eality a nd not a dream, then th e over fi fty perc ent of rural children in our country must be taught more than the ability to drone out "America" a nd one or two ot her tunes so often the ca se in the one-teach er schools. Work in music appr eciation and well dir ected sing ing should not be confined to our city schools; music is a heritage to which every child in America is entitled, the rur al child included. The Rural Dem- ons tration school Ch o rus is an exemplification of the fact that the rural child CAN sing and should be an objective plea for affording opport uniti es to the 77,000 children in our South Dakota rural schools to s ing a nd to appreciate music. A systematic course in music appreciation also has been gi ven the children in the Demonstration Schools. During the year about a score of the world's masterpi eces in music have been studiegl. A selection is played on the phonogra ph, and the student teacher gives an expos ition of the motif or theme, the circumstance s under which the piece was composed and some of the interesti ng facts abo ut the a uthor. The sel ection is played fre- quently during the term and the children acquire ma rked ability in distinguishing the masterpieces played. On Rally Day ne a rly a score of the great mus- ical masterpieces of the world were played on in- struments, not on the phonograph as the children had previously h eard them. Th e children were asked to write the name of each selection, t he na me of the composer and the name of the country to whi ch he belonged. This work was done so well that the judges fo und it ve ry difficult to de- cide on th e winning school. On Rally Day the chil dren al so parti cipat ed in contests in geography, pict ure study a nd number work. Test flash cards were run on a Auto-Flash- Card machine, the time exposure of each card not exceeding four seconds. It was found necessary to gi ve a second and even a third test in order to decide some of th ese contests, the childr en a ll scoring perf ect in the first test. Lib eral prizes were awarded in each cont est a nd a grand prize of $25. 00 to the school winning the most honor poi nts was provided by Charl es Howard of Aber- deen.
