Splinters From The Chair
oes your wife like antique cars? It's a simple
question, but it can be a bit of a scary one.
Mine tolerates them, and I may be putting too
positive a spin on it at that. Let's look at a wife's op-
tions. When the hus-
band suffers from such
an incurable, terminal
disability, she basically
has two choices. Give
the poor guy the chuck
or tolerate his afflic-
tion. But I have been
led to believe that there may be some wives out there
who actually like antique cars. If you happen to be
one of those fortunate blokes who has found such a
wife, you are indeed a lucky man. Such a wife is to
be greatly cherished for the rare and exotic lady that
she is.
I have spent most of my antique-car life fretting
over the weather. Will it be sunny or will it be
cloudy? Will it rain or even snow? Will the white-
stuff pile up until you can't see out of the wind-
shield? Or worst case scenario, what about that most

The Edmonton Antique Car Club
he Edmonton Antique Car Club is registered in the Province of Alberta as a
nonprofit society, interested in historical motor vehicles and related collectible
items. Our club is dedicated to the acquisition, restoration, preservation, sal-
vage, maintenance of and promotion of interest in cars from the following
categories.
The Horseless Carriage Era (1892 to 1905)
The Brass Era (1906 to 1915)
The Vintage Era (1916 to 1927)
Early Production (1928 to 1935)
Late Production (1936 to 1948
Classics (1925 to 1948) (Defined by The Classic Car Club of America.)
Our objectives also include encouraging the retention of such vehicles in Al-
berta, promoting driving tours, displays and other activities our vehicles can
participate in, and educating the general public in the historical contribution of
the automobile in the development of our Canadian heritage.
Our membership is varied as to careers and cars, and extends country wide. To
qualify as a member, new applicants must be at least 14 years of age; must
complete an application form (which is submitted to the club executive for
approval), and pay a nominal membership fee of $40.00 per year (spousal,
additional $20). It is not necessary to own a vintage car, but merely to have an
interest in antique auto memorabilia.
In the club discriptor on the lower half of page 2, please add back in the first two categories of automobile: The Horseless Carriage Era (1892 to 1905); The Brass Era (1906 to 1915).
Please add the following to the Schedule of Events for 2012:
Sat. May 26, Fort Assiniboine to Barrhead Run (contact Steve Bemount) Sun. Jun 3, EACC 50th Anni-versary Picnic at Leduc West Wed. Jun 20 thru Tue. Jun 26, EACC 50th Anniversary Tour
General Meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday evening of each
month, with tours and events being dispersed throughout the calendar year. The
Annual General Meeting is held each year in January.
Our club members participate in a variety of events and activities which pro-
mote social interaction among members, and give them an opportunity to drive
their cars and display them to the general public. Annual events include the
Klondike Breakfast, the Corn Roast, and mystery tours. Senior visits are a
way for our club to give back to the community. Members also participate in
community events such as Sunday in the City , Father’s Day in the Park, Crys-
tal Kids, and harvest festivals. Our club participates in the annual International
Meet in which members from all corners of Western Canada and the North-
west United States come together for a wonderful exchange of camaraderie,
trophies and good old-fashioned fun.
Our club publishes a monthly newsletter, The Running Board. Members are
encouraged to submit articles and other items of interest to the editor for publi-
cation. As a member you are entitled to receive a copy of each issue and to run
free classified ads in the “Swap Meet” section.
Club members as a group have a wealth of experience and knowledge of all
aspects of the antique car hobby which they will share with you. Bring your
particular problem to our membership and you will be probably be directed to
an expert in that field.

dreaded of unexpected events for cloth-topped buggy
drivers--hail? How many times has it been sunny all
week long only to be some version of less than won-
derful on the weekend when it's time to have a car
activity? It rained on the tail-end of our Easter Pa-
rade with some mercifully tiny hail thrown in. It was
rainy and miserable on our trek out to the Footloose
Caboose. Then, it was cold, blustery, and threaten-
ing for our run out to Chez Woytovicz. So I had
pretty much decided that I needed turn over a new
leaf and really work hard at not worrying about what
the weather may turn out like and just enjoy the mo-
ment. I even shined up the '39 to get ready for the
Spring Tour on May 18, which I knew was a risky
thing to do. The week leading up to our Spring Tour
was mostly sunny and reasonably pleasant. But all
week long the forecast had been for rain on Sunday
the 18th. But I had this new outlook and I tried ever
so hard not to care about the forecast. Sunday morn-
ing was nice and sunny and my spirits rose. We
headed out for our 1:00 p.m. gathering; there were a
few clouds starting to form, but the sun still pre-
vailed. Maybe this new approach of not fretting
about the weather really does pay off. Then it hap-
pened! We bumped over a pothole and the car died
just like someone had shut off the switch. I failed to
identify this mysterious electrical problem, but I be-
lieve we were no longer getting any spark going
where it was needed. We were hauled home in
shame on the AMA chariot of humiliation and obvi-
ously missed the Spring Tour altogether. We drove
that '39 over 2,600 miles down into US territory last
August without a hint of a hiccup, but the minute I
quit concerning myself with the weather, disaster
struck. Perhaps I should go back to my traditional
method of fretting about the weather; it seems to
work out much better most of the time. Also, I hate
potholes!
June promises another month richly endowed
with a great many opportunities for antique car mo-
toring. These include the "North Pointe Church
Show & Shine" on Saturday, June 07 where we get
to promote our EACC and hopefully ferret out a new
member or two. Then EACC has been invited to join
with the Edmonton Classic Sports Car Club for their
"Picnic in the Park " at Victoria Park on Saturday,
June 14. EACC's "Fathers' Day Car Show" at Fort
Edmonton Park is on Sunday, June 15; pre 1930 cars
are preferred but pre 1940 will be accepted. We
have our joint BBQ with the NAP&DA at the Old
Timers' Cabin on Sunday, June 22. This year's
"International Tour" in Missoula, Montana, goes
from Friday, June 27 through Sunday, June 29. Or,
there's the "Ukrainian Village Vintage Day" on Sun-
day, June 29 with the Weird Little Car Club and the
Edmonton Classic Sports Car Club; we will muster
at the Tim Hortons at Capilano Mall at 8:30 a.m. .
But above all, don't forget that our seniors visits be-
gin on June 3. Please try to get in on as many of
these as possible. It's a great chance to bring a little
joy to others.
And above all, try real hard not to worry about the
weather!

Woytovicz Garage Tour by Chris Bamford
Thirty-five members of the EACC and Edmon-
ton’s WLCC (Weird Little Car Club) decended en
masse on George and Lovette Woytovicz’ acreage
just north of the city for a garage tour on Saturday
May 10. The word “garage“ hardly does the place
justice... unlike most of our car caves, it is bright,
new, shiny, commodious, clean, neat, well-stocked
and filled (no, not filled, there is room for several
more) with an eclectic collection of lovely automo-
biles. The comment most heard by your reporter was
any number of variations on “Boy, would I love a
place like this!”
This was our first joint event with the WLCC and
they enjoyed looking at our cars and, although most
of them were travelling modern this early in the year,
they did muster a couple of weirdos for the run. Sev-

eral EACC members were particularly intrigued by a
1967 Fiat 500 that appeared to have a go-kart engine
in the trunk.
Many thanks to George and Lovette for a fun
morning and congratulations on your wonderful
“garage”!
Instant Car Show by Chris Bamford
Jim Boomer has been diligently signing up sponsors
for the North Pointe Church car show on June 7, in-
cluding the Part Source store on 137 Ave at 130 St.
They had a Grand Reopening Saturday April 26 and
the manager Larry Zachs called Jim Friday afternoon
to see if he could round up some cars to beautify
their event the next morning. Jim hit the phones and
found three members willing to brave the cool
weather in return for free burgers and 15% off 'most
anything in the store. Interestingly, it turned into an
All-Ford show spanning the nine years (and tremen-
dous progress in style and performance) from 1926
(Bamford) through 1931 (Surbey Jr) to 1935 (Surbey
Sr). Two highlight for me were talking with a fellow
who confidently assured me that all modern engines
had only two main bearings — one front and one
EACC member Bob Lee rode both ways with the
WLCC’s Jonathan Gregory in his ‘67 Fiat 500. Bob
enjoyed the experience but is not ready to trade in
the '29 DeSoto just yet.
The ladies enjoy a gabfest in the workshop area as
the menfolk admire more cars, more equipment and
EVEN MORE SPACE! The green ‘34 Ford behind
Clem Lamouroux and Jack Cairns is the actual car
that got Clem hooked on the hobby back in 1959
when he and Doreen rode with John Pasemko out to
a picnic at Elk Island Park.
The parts and tool room is just off the workshop and
shares a wall with the parking area (1st photo). Be-

NAP&DA Garage Sale
& Show ‘N Shine by Chris Bamford
Sunday May 25: Sixteen EACC members brought
their old cars out for our first-ever joint event with
the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Descendants As-
sociation, who are, of course, our monthly meeting
hosts at the Old Timers’ Cabin on Scona Road. Sev-
eral other members arrived in their moderns to buy
and/or sell at the sale and enjoy the company of
friends.
EACC Spring Tour by Ken Huff
Seventeen cars and their respective owners and
passengers gathered at Westmount Shopping Center
on a nice Sunday afternoon prior to heading out on
the EACC Spring Tour. We went west from the cen-
ter and then south into the Valleyview neighbour-
hood for a quick look at the Katz Mansion and then
stopped along the drive for a nice photo op provided
by Mario Tellez and his son Mateo. So far nearly all
There were some 40 tables in the sale, of which three
were run by five or six EACC members. I scored an
old flashlight I don’t need, several reference books I
might need sometime, and a replacement for my re-
cently-deceased handheld GPS speedometer at 75%
off the original price.
Members’ cars were lined up on the east side of the
OTC parking lot and easily visible from the nearby
road. Several cars were on their first event for 2014.
Two members cars I haven’t seen before were
Ken and Susan Denning’s very striking ‘57 Chevy
ragtop and Mike and Mary Reid’s beautiful 1911
Mode T Touring. The Ford enjoyed a full engine,
transmission and rear-end overhaul recently and is
one sweet-running car. The Reids put a lot of miles
on the old gal that weekend — the previous day they
logged some 100 miles on a planning run for the 50-
mile 2nd Annual Strathcona County tour in August
(did the route twice, once each way!)

Thanks Chris, a really nice way to spend a Sun-
day afternoon with friends and old cars.
Specialty Vehicle Association
Annual General Meeting Report by EACC representative Bob Callfas
The SVAA's purpose is to protect the rights and
priveleges of the auto hobbyists of Alberta and repre-
sents nearly 60 clubs and over 2600 members. Its
executives and directors consist of volunteers from
clubs all around the province and from all aspects of
the hobby.
1. It is a high priority of the SVAA to have more ve-
hicles inspected on an annual basis. This is to be a
visual inspection only, no components are required
to be removed. This may be done by a certified me-
chanic or anyone with the appropriate knowledge to
complete the safety checklist thoroughly. The EACC
has created a safety checklist form and the SVAA
has one online at www.svaalberta.com. All com-
pleted forms should be given to Ernie Korchinsky, he
will present you with a safety sticker and forward the
form to the SVAA.
2. The top-notch publication of the SVAA, Alberta
Rides is available in limited printed form and can be
found online at www.svaalberta.com. Please check it
out. We will send it out on the EACC e-mail list.
They are looking for articles of interest to fellow
hobbyists, especially from the northern part of our
province. It is a costly magazine to produce thus
more advertising is an ongoing goal for the SVAA.
Any leads on businesses that may want to get the
word out to hobbyists are appreciated.
3. A full slate of executives and directors was
elected, lead by President Harry Bullock of
Lethbridge.
4. Our very own EACC member, Earl Clements, re-
tired after 16 years as SVAA treasurer. He will con-
tinue on in some capacity with the SVAA.
5. A presentation by representatives of Lakeland
College in Vermillion informed us of their new pro-
gram “Street Rod Technologies”. It is comprehen-
sive, hands-on, and deals with all aspects of collector
vehicle building and repair.
the cars are still together as we head east on 102
Avenue across the steel deck bridge over Groat
Road. The bridge is closing July 1st to be replaced
with a new structure to open in 2015. Turning left on
124 Street heading north to 108 Ave where we went
into an alley to have a look at one of the few remain-
ing carriage houses in Edmonton. Very Neat. On-
ward to our tour destination, the Alberta Aviation
Museum located on Kingsway at the old airport.
We were treated to a guided tour of the facility by
Tom Hindricks, the executive director of the mu-
seum. He provided us with much information about
the facility including the building itself, the various
aircraft and other aviation memorabilia that is on dis-
play. This museum is a true jewel for the City and
must be supported whenever we can.
As we left the museum, mother nature decided to
provide a little liquid sunshine as several of the cars
made their way back to Westmount and coffee and
goodies at the local McDonalds restaurant. It was
really nice to see a large turnout, including several

“English Breakfast” at the
Footloose Caboose by Chris Bamford
Eight EACC members joined the ECSCC
(Edmonton Classic Sports Car Club) for their annual
run out to the Footloose Caboose near Tofield for a
delicious luncheon on Sunday, May 04. And al-
though we were outnumbered two to one, and despite
the cool damp weather, our team fielded five vintage
autos for the event — far and above the grand total
of One proper sports car from the other gang.
The Footloose Caboose is a B&B, weekend res-
taurant and assortment of funky attractions (barbed-
wire museum anyone?) 38 miles SE of Edmonton.

Winnipeg Swap Meet by Dave Halliday
Winnipeg – A benefit of seeing other car clubs’
newsletters via e-mail is learning about their swap
meets.
Sometimes, a trip to another city will coincide
with one of those meets. That’s what happened when
we traveled to Winnipeg to visit our daughter and
son-in-law in early May.
I saw in the Manitoba Classic and Antique Auto
Club newsletter that a swap meet was scheduled for
May 11 at the Red River Exhibition grounds. Swap
meet hours were 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but I didn’t get
there until 1 p.m. due to other commitments.
This is a good-sized swap meet that compares fa-
vourably with the Lethbridge meet, but not on a par
with Red Deer.
The vendors all seemed to be individuals selling
off excess parts — I didn’t see any commercial ven-
dors. These are the vendors I normally look for — I
know I can phone or e-mail commercial vendors
anytime.
The new and used parts ranged from the 1930s
through the 1970s. There were several vendors who
appeared to be clearing out new parts that may have
come from a service station or auto parts store.
Those parts included ball joints and wheel cylinders.
Unfortunately, those vendors didn’t have the parts
books needed to determine what the parts fit, so
unless there was something a buyer knew by sight,
buying these parts was a roll of the dice.
There some parts for pre-Second World War ve-
hicles, but not a lot.
There were a few vehicles for sale ranging from a
1935 Chevrolet (a partly finished street rod) up into
the 1960s. One interesting vehicle was a 1958 Ford
two-door sedan that had a three-carb setup on its six-
cylinder engine. Multi-carb setups on inline sixes
aren’t a common sight.
I felt prices were reasonable on both parts and
memorabilia. The prices for collectible oil cans were
much more realistic than what I saw a week earlier at
Red Deer.
Although I didn’t find anything I couldn’t live
without, I felt it was a meet worth visiting.
The Edmonton Antique Car Club Invites You To:
The 2nd Annual Strathcona
County Tour Sunday, August 24th, 2014
In 2012 because the Oldies Tour was cancelled
we held a one day leisurely tour of Strathcona
County taking advantage of the many miles of
paved country roads in the County. The plan is to
make this run an annual event travelling a different
route each year. This year’s tour is 84 km and is
specifically designed for the “Older” vehicles. The
tour travels mainly on paved back roads at a lei-
surely pace so you can enjoy the scenery of the
County. (approx. 2 km unpaved roadways)
The tour takes in the back country of Strathcona
County and finishes at Mike & Mary Reid’s House
@ 557 Estate Drive in Sherwood Park where light
refreshments will be served. (Please bring your
own lawn chairs)
Please RSVP to Mike or Mary Reid (so we can plan
for adequate food). Phone — (780) 464-6146 or via
e-mail—[email protected]
This 84 KM leisurely run is designed for pre-1939
vehicles so we encourage you to bring yours!
