INTRODUCTION

A SOLUTION FOR DSLR, ACTION CAMS & DRONES FOR LOW AND NO LIGHT SITUATIONS

Light is essential to achieving the highest quality photography and videography. Low and no light conditions pose a significant challenge as they require external light, which costs time and money and requires work to get a quality image.

Advancements in camera technology have improved image quality in low and no light conditions. However, such images tend to be grainy, unsaturated and low contrast without proper lighting.

In order to not let the sun go down on your photo and video shoots, you need quality light. It becomes even more important if the subject is farther away.

A NEW SOLUTION

RUGGED GO ANYWHERE LIGHT FOR CAMERA AND DRONE USE

CURRENT LIGHTING TOOLS AVAILABLEThere are many lights on the marketplace for cameras and action cameras. They vary in size and brightness and have one fixed beam angle. Many of these lights are waterproof and use LED technology. Some of the limitations of these lights include:

• Too broad or too focused a beam

• Unable to use in rain or underwater

• Swapping out replacement batteries may be

difficult or time consuming

• Insufficient heat sinking makes the light hot to the touch (heat also damages electronics in the long run)

A NEW SOLUTION: THE FOXFURY RUGO™

The Rugo™ is go anywhere lighting loaded with features that conquer some of the limitations

expressed above. This includes:

• Sliding Tri-Lens™: three lenses (area, spot and flood) in one

• Quick Swap™ Power Pack: quickly replace batteries as needed

• Waterproof and all-weather

• Mountable to handlebars, helmets, DSLR, action camera and most professional drones

Rugo™ with standard mount Rugo™ with cold shoe mount

A NEW SOLUTION

MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT

Lumens and lux are two different ways that light intensity can be measured.

Lumens refers to the overall amount of light a light puts out. Unfortunately, different light manufacturers report lumens differently. Some are quite aggressive and don’t factor in any losses due to heat or other energy. Others are more conservative. For this reason, it’s possible that Light A can be brighter than Light B even though it’s rated to have fewer lumens. Some lights drop off in intensity over time, so they may not hold the advertised number of lumens over the advertised run time.

Lux is another measure of light. It refers to the amount of light on a subject at a specified distance. It is a more accurate measure and more useful when comparing two lights.

BEAM ANGLES MAKE A DIFFERENCE

One overlooked aspect of lighting is beam angle. Beam angle refers to how focused or diffused a light beam is. Many camera lights only offer one beam angle. The FoxFury Rugo™ offers a Tri-Lens™ with 3 different beam types:

• Flood (120°): wide angle lens for close-up shots (up to 10ft | 3m away)

• Area (55°): for mid-range shots (up to 33ft | 10m away)

• Spot (18°): focused lens for distance shots (up to 98ft | 30m away)

The Rugo™ Tri-Lens™ has three (3) beam emission angles which can be used for many different applications by simply sliding from left to right and vise-versa.

1. Push the Tri-Lens™ to either the right or left side until it won’t go any further. Use your fingers to slightly pull the Guards away from the unit, while pushing the Tri-Lens™ with your thumb. This will help the Tri-Lens™ to overcome the ridge, (located at the end of the Guard) and will allow it to be easily released.

2. Once the Tri-Lens™ overcomes the ridge, pull it free from the Light Head.

FOR RE-INSTALLATION: Line up the Tri-Lens™ with the ridge. Then push it back into position on the Light Head.

CONSEQUENCES OF POOR LIGHTING

Low light photography can be challenging. Blurry, noisy (grainy) and low quality photos and videos are the end result of poor lighting (ambient and other). The powerful Rugo™ helps overcome low light conditions. With three lenses, light can be distributed according to the needs of the shoot.

LIGHT SET UP

The number and type of lights required on a shoot depends on the nature of the shoot and the amount and quality of ambient lighting. Rugo™ lights can be mounted to the flash hot shoe mount on a camera. A 1/4”-20 and Cold-shoe Mount (both included) are needed to use the Rugo™ on a camera. The Rugo™ can also be used separate from the camera. For example, on a tripod or strategically placed in a scene (tight spaces, etc.). See page 10 for more details.

CONTINUOUS VS. STROBE LIGHTS

Strobe lights (a flash or quick pulse of light) tend to be brighter with more power. They are used for photography only. There is less likelihood of getting motion blur or causing the subject to squint.

Continuous light is light that stays on. It enables you to see what you’re looking at in real time. The other main advantage of continuous lighting is that you can shoot both photo and video. Brighter lighting is needed to accomplish the same result you can get with a dimmer strobe.

ASPECT RATIO

Cameras generally have an aspect ratio of 3:2. That means the image is wider than it is tall. If you shoot with too focused a light source, it may lead to vignetting (dark areas around the perimeter your image). For that reason, the Area and Spot setting on the Rugo™ may lead due to a better image because the light beam is wider.

OFF CAMERA LIGHTS

ACCENT LIGHTS

The small size of the Rugo™ enables it to be used as an accent or accessory light. It can be used to light small places and spaces. For example, to illuminate the area around a drone landing pad (see left).

It can also be used off camera to provide lighting in unique locations. This is especially beneficial if space is at a premium. The Rugo™’s compact size also enables it to accent small spaces to call out key features. Rugos were the only light sources used in the shoot at left.

NAVIGATING WIDE ANGLES

Action cameras are inherently wide angle (almost fish-eye). A light source that is too focused will result in vignetting. Wider lenses like the Area and Flood on the Rugo™ will help capture footage that will properly illuminate the wider aspect ratio to capture the entire scene.

SMALLER SENSORS = GREATER NEED FOR LIGHT

On average, action cams have smaller sensors than DSLRs and mirror-less cameras. For that reason, having sufficient lighting is critical in order to avoid grainy, low quality footage. Rugo™ lights help offset this to capture higher quality content.

ASPECT RATIO

Action cameras can vary (4:3, 16:9, etc.) depending on the action camera used. That means the image is wider than it is tall. If you shoot with too focused a light source, it may lead to vignetting (dark areas around the perimeter your image). For that reason, the Area and Spot setting on the Rugo™ may lead to a better image because the light beam is wider.

DRONES

INSPECT OR SHOOT

The two most common applications for drones in night flight are either inspection (including search and rescue) or filming. The higher the drone is off the ground, the more focused the light beam needs to be in order to properly monitor and utilize what is being recorded.

The Rugo™ has a spot lens, which permits a narrow 18° beam. That makes it useful for inspections and filming at a distance of up to 98ft (30m) from the subject on the ground. The result is shown on page 15.

See page 16 to see the difference between illumination offered by the three lenses from an overhead drone perspective.

COMPARATIVE BEAM SHOTS

INSPECT OR SHOOT

These are the Seven Magic Mountains, an art installation just outside Las Vegas. These 7 day-glow totems range between 25 and 35 ft tall. As you can see from the picture above, these totems made of large fluorescent colored stones dwarf visitors. It is located on BLM land and therefore completely dark at night, which makes it a great location for night beamshots.
