THE YEAR OF ROVER!

Hi Folks,

This year, 2012 is the 25th anniversary of the Susquehanna Rovers. Make plans to come out and help us celebrate by walking our scheduled and Year Round walks and make this a record breaking walking year.

Our first walk, June 2nd is in Duncannon to celebrate the town of Duncannon becoming an Appalachian Trail Community. There will be plenty of activities for you to enjoy. And isn’t it appropriate to have the first Rover’s Anniversary Walk in conjunction with an Appalachian Trail celebration.

So far the Rovers have 3 other events scheduled for the year. July 28th - a Ned Smith celebration in Millersburg, a baseball special event—Canal Day walk in Newport on October 2nd and of course our big weekend at the Hershey Walkfest on Thanksgiving weekend.

To celebrate our anniversary, we have a cute giveaway for all that finish our scheduled walks. So make sure that you come out to help us celebrate the Rovers 25th year of walking.

If you are computer savvy or just use the internet for finding information, AVA has signed up at www.goodsearch.com. This search engine donates money to AVA each time you use it. The money comes to AVA for searching or shopping on the net, eating out and using their app on your smart phone. Right now I have earned $1.85 for AVA by using the search engine. That does not seem like much but all I do is use it as my search engine instead of Google. I would like to make a challenge to all: Use this search engine by registering and picking AVA as your charity (make sure you read the About US/FA in the blue shaded section at the bottom of their page) and if you are the highest ROVER money raiser at the end of the 2012 year, I will personally pay for all your ROVER YREs that you do in 2013.

Meeting Time and Location

Club meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM in the meeting room at Gander Mountain, 5005 Jonestown Rd (Route 22), Harrisburg. 717-671-9700. Everyone is welcome to attend! The next three meetings will be:

May 29, 2012* June 26, 2012 July 31, 2012

Come to our meeting on May 29th to start celebrating our 25th anniversary - there will be cake!

The Lincoln Highway Program

The Lincoln Highway crosses 15 counties in Pennsylvania. There are seasonal or year round events in all 15 counties. A qualifying event is one that touches, crosses, or uses part of the Lincoln High-way. You can download the record book

from the AVA website: www.ava.org. Then go to Clubs, pick PA, then Quak-ertown - Keystone State Volkssport Assn. That will take you to the choice of the Lincoln Highway Program. The POC is Tom Jackson, 1287 Shippens-burg Rd, Biglerville, PA 17307. Email: [email protected] or Phone: 717-677-6511 or 717-309-6088 There is a fee to obtain the award.

Try it - you will learn a lot about our traveling history. This original marker of the Lincoln High-way can be found on the Chambersburg Year Round Event. Alice Eckardt and Ellen Buller are admiring it in January during the Chambersburg Ice Fest. The gas pump to the right is also on the trail in Cham-bersburg.

What interesting things you find while on Volks-

marches!

You can also find a painted gas pump at our Year Round Event in McConnellsburg. Shown below is part of the Lincoln Highway in Gettys-burg. You will only see this gas pump if you walk the 6K on Day 1. When did we have snow this winter? Must have been around Feb 11 when we did this group walk in Gettysburg. Two views of same gas pump. Julie Geyer, Sue Wheeler, Amy Trommer and Alice Eckardt are admiring the art work.

Atlantic Region Conference

In Fredericksburg VA Happy walkers at the Wilderness Battlefield in VA - Alice Eckardt, Amy Trommer, Janice Copenhaver, Marcy Lucas, Cookie Little, Leroy Copenhaver, and Marcy’s Mom- Sandy.

We had a great time (almost all of the time) at the confer-ence. (Amy fell at a boardwalk and didn’t get to enjoy the Chancellorsville event) There were also walks in Freder-icksburg, at the Battlefields in Spotsylvania and The Wil-derness. The Germanna Volkssport Assn did an excellent job of putting on the four walks and the conference, show-ing us a lot of southern hospitality.

New Walker! Charlie Johnson brought her 13 year old grandson Daniel to the Rocky Ridge County Park last Saturday for a stroll through the woods. He was fascinated by all of the things that he could find to climb on or over. It was his first time Volksmarching, but I don’t think that it will be the last time. Although it looks like he is close to the ground on a tree, he is really up about 6 foot in the air. I had some trouble with my phone camera - it would only take videos, so after sever-al attempts, Daniel helped me get it into the still picture mode. It is always good to have a member of the younger generation around when there are technical problems

Do you need Crawford County for the Walk PA Counties Program?

The Nittany Nomads are offering a seasonal walk in Meadville in Crawford County starting June 1 and ending September 30, 2012. This is the county seat and was founded in 1788.

It will start at the Meadville Family YMCA, 356 Chestnut St. Trail is rated 2A - 10/5K The walk is on city streets and winds through older neighborhoods and campus of Allegheny College. Special programs include: Bakeries, Cinemas, Main St, Murals and Law Enforcement.

Check out the event on the AVA website. Don’t miss this opportunity to add Crawford County to your list of counties.

Wanted Pedometers! Any unused pedometers cluttering up a drawer? Don't throw them away. They are needed. The Duncannon Senior Center plans to start a walking program for their members and needs the pedometers for the participants to record their steps. Charlie Johnson has been asked to plan the program so she will be the "point of collection." There is also a need for "walking companions" as the goal is to include as many seniors as possible. There is great interest including those who must utilize a walker in taking the shortest "jaunt" outside. A walking companion will give them personal encouragement and support. The walks will not be held until warm weather--probably later in the Spring. Volunteers to act as walking companions are very welcome! With the AVA motto of "Fun...Fitness....and Fellowship," this program will certainly promote that ideal to those who cannot freely participate. Bring the pedometers to the Duncannon Event on June 2. Charlie can be reached at 717-834-4185 or email her at [email protected]. She welcomes any ideas and help in program planning.

When You Are Eighty

We have good news for you. The first eighty years are the hardest. The second eighty are a succession of birthday parties! Everybody wants to carry your baggage and help you up the steps. If you forget your name or anybody’s name, forget to keep an appointment, promise to be two or three places at the same time, or spell words wrong, you need only explain you are eighty. At eighty you can relax with no misgivings, you have a perfect alibi for everything - nobody expects much of you. If you act silly, it’s your second childhood. Everybody is looking for symptoms of softening of the brain. It’s a great deal better than being sixty-five or seventy...at that time they expect you to retire to a little house in Florida and become discontented, grumbling, and a limping has-been. But if you survive until eighty, they’re surprised that you are alive, surprised that you can walk, surprised that you reveal lucid intervals. At seventy people are mad at you for everything...at eighty they forgive you for anything. If you ask us, life begins at eighty! Lucky you! Given to Louise by Sue Adams. (Author unknown)

Wow and Thank You!!!!

“Life is good, “so says my blue Wander Woman visor

cap (with an LED light for Night Walks) - a gift at my

surprise 80th Birthday Bash. Wow! They were coming

out of the woodwork at Gilligan's: Susquehanna Rovers,

York White Rose Wanderers, Cumberland Valley Lead

Foot—ers, and even a couple Freestate Wanderers. In

addition to the 40+ people who were there, a card had

been signed by many other York Wanderers.

The ringleaders: Amy Trommer, Alice Eckardt, Sue

Wheeler and Pat Eby outdid themselves —-all those

wonderful, familiar faces, good food, gifts, and lots of

laughs.

There’s not room to describe all the lovely gifts, but I

can probably eat out for months, and I’m going to

purchase a new folding Volkstaf since I recently lost

the one I’d used for 20 years. (At 80, you’re entitled

to lose things.) Who else would receive as gifts a

packet of cucumber seeds and a dozen pint jars labeled

PLEASE FILL ME?

I am honored to accept the BLAME for turning 80 so

all of you could have a wonderful evening. Come join us

on the Lighted Trail in December and for fun at Chez

Louise. Thank you, one and all.

AVA New Trail Ratings for 2012 From AVA: Although any rating system is somewhat subjective, the two-part numerical/alpha rating system will give event organizers a reliable tool so participants have an idea about what to expect on a route whether it is for walking, biking, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing. They need to know about major elevation gains, heavy traffic, narrow road shoulders, construction detours, roaming dogs, cattle guards, and the like on the route. Examples: A route that is mostly on flat pavement would be rated 1A; a beach walk would be rated 1C; or a route with moderate hills on well groomed trails would be rated 2B.

Also, this is a safety issue since an improperly/underrated event could have serious consequences for someone who is not physically prepared for more strenuous route conditions.

Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the

War of 1812

Less than 30 years after the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War and the United States officially gained recognition as a sovereign country, a young American nation again declared war on Great Britain. The War of 1812 was fought for a variety of reasons, including British interference

with American shipping, the seizure of American sailors, trade restrictions with France (with whom Britain was also at war), and British support of Native Americans which limited westward expansion. After two and a half years of fighting, both sides had grown weary of a costly war that offered little but stalemate. The Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814, effectively ending the war and largely bringing a return to the conditions found before the fighting began.

The War of 1812 ranged along much of the Great Lakes’ coastline where American, British and Native American forces clashed for control of the heart of the continent. Today, the Great Lakes Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway follows the frontlines

of the War of 1812 in the north.

We invite you to experience the 9 walks in the War of 1812 Series as we commemorate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and celebrate 200 years of peace between the US and Canada.

The War of 1812 Walk Series includes: Pennsylvania - Erie and New York - Buffalo, Williamsville, Lewiston, Youngstown, Pultneyville, Oswego, Sackets Harbor, and Ogdensburg. Each event has a different hat pin as an award. The one shown to the left is for Erie.

The Erie event starts at the Avalon Hotel, 16 W. 10th St, Erie PA. Ask for the Walk Box. The 10/6K Trail is rated 1A. The AVA Special Programs include: Bakeries Family Owned, Baseball Walks, Fort of the US, Rainbow Color –Named Places, Murals.
