STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE ~ GOD'S PLAN FOR GIVINGFor the Lord’s generosity, we returned to His Church

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Merry Christmas to all and a healthy and prosperous2017! We begin this new year with hope. It is filledwith possibility. Our new calendars which wereblessed at Mass last month look empty, but they will

soon be filled with activities and events. We have plannedfor some of them. Other events will surprise us. We realizethis year will bring its measure of sorrow, but we trust it tobring its measure of joy. Let this new year be a blessing.Today, New Year’s Day, we hear the words of blessingspoken by God to Moses: “The Lord bless you and keep you.”They are words of protection. “The Lord be gracious to you.”They are words of favor. “The Lord give you peace!” They arewords that wish the finest blessing, the gift of peace. Theyare particularly fitting for the first day of the year, the day setaside in a special way to pray for peace. So many of ourparish families suffer from misunderstanding and deep-seated resentments; neighborhoods are torn apart, andcommunities are ravaged with racial or ethnic hostility. Theworld itself is caught in the throes of violent war. We are indesperate need of God’s peace. This new year, with all itspromise, gives us the possibility of blessing. Perhaps youhave withheld blessing from someone you know. Perhapsyou especially need God’s gift of peace. Perhaps you fear theabsence of God’s protection. Let this blessing calm yourheart. Let it inspire you to breath God’s gift of peace to allyou meet this day and this new year. Let the blessing of God,first spoken to Moses, echoing throughout the ages, enteryour home and warm your heart.

During Christmas time, we have been attentive tothe child born to fulfill the promises made long ago. Today,we focus on Mary, the one from whose flesh the child wasfashioned. In all the Christmas stories she is silent, explaining nothing when visitors come to see the marvelsthat have taken place. Most likely she did not understandthem herself. Today we are told that “Mary kept all thesethings, reflecting on them in her heart.” There are times whenwe, too must reflect on all these things in our hearts. Atother times we might have to remind ourselves of ourhumanness. This, too, calls for reflection. The excitementthat surrounds Christmas, the lights and the music, thefeasting and the guests can prevent us from appreciating thereal meaning of the feast. At such times, we must step backand reflect on these things in our hearts.

Happy New Year, my friends!Father LaMorte

URGENT PRAYER NEEDS? Call Cheryl at 429-4223 or e-mailher at [email protected] and she will notify the prayernetwork who will pray for your intentions also.

OUR APPRECIATION Father LaMorte andMonsignor Weber appreciate all of the Christmascards, gifts and baking that you have beensending to our home in the rectory. Thank youfor your generosity all through the year, but

especially during the holidays. We are so grateful to you foryour outstanding donations to the Christmas offering and theThanksgiving and Christmas food drives and the ChristmasAngel Project and Adopt-a-Family. It is a big help in theoperation of our parish and its programs. Isn’t the church sobeautifully decorated? Thank you to everyone who helped tohighlight the inside of the church and the narthex.Decorations will remain until they are removed on the Feast ofthe Lord’s Baptism (January 9), when the Ordinary Time of theChurch year begins.

MEMORIAL CANDLES reach Catholics on a spiritual level andremain a source of inspiration and a symbol of Christ as aworthwhile expression of faith. They have always been seen assentinels, keeping watch while a person cannot be there. Bylighting a candle, people know their prayer will continuethroughout the day, long after they leave church. Our candlesare designed to also serve as perpetual memorials for a specificintention which will remain lighted day and night for a wholeyear for a donation of $200. You may inquire at the parishoffice. If you had a candle for the past year, please let us knowif you would like to renew it.

FIRST FRIDAY MASSES will be offered this week at7:30 and 9:00 AM. In conjunction with that, you maywant to spend a holy hour at the Eucharistic

Adoration Chapel. We need to have people present during theentire time that the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar. Please consider being in the Real Presence of Our Lord. It willbe the most peaceful and rewarding time in your month.

OPEN HOUSE CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE PARISH RECTORY Everyone is most warmly invited to visit the parish Christmas tree – themost beautiful tree in all of Rockland County! Father will be at the parish house to welcome you this afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.Please come and visit with your fellow parishioners, enjoy the company and relax. As a professional bachelor, Father has always hasa hostess or two for the day to greet guests when they come, make them feel at home and offer them refreshments, plus help cleanup afterwards. We hope to see you.

BAPTISM SEMINAR Our parish offers a monthly seminar for those parents awaiting the birth or adoption of achild, or have an infant ready for baptism. Please call our parish office (947-1873) to make your reservation. The next seminar will be held on Monday, January 2 at 7:30 PM in OLV in the undercroft of the chapel. Theupcoming dates for Sunday baptisms at 1:00 PM are: January 15; February 5 and 19; March 5 and 19.

FEED OUR NEIGHBORS: A CATHOLIC RESPONSE Cardinal Dolan is calling on every Catholic institution in the archdiocese to join the fifthannual FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS CAMPAIGN and to dedicate the last week of January, Sunday to Sunday, to increasing the supply of foodavailable to feed hungry New Yorkers. Unfortunately, the high demand for emergency food continues this year. We need to recognizeand praise the generous and dedicated work that our parish is already doing. Without these efforts, our current crisis would be muchworse. This initiative cannot resolve the problem, for it is impossible to make up all the reductions in resources. However, the factthat we cannot do everything is not an excuse to do nothing. There is a special box in the narthex and your food may be left there. This program is also being held simultaneously in all of our Regional Schools. Mr. Ruzzi will coordinate with the religious educationchildren. Thank you so much for your participation in this very worthy effort.

LITTLE ROCK SCRIPTURE STUDY “PANORAMA OF THE NEW TESTAMENT” This study, led by Deacon John and Lucy Kelly willbegin on Thursday, January 19 and will have two separate sessions at 3:00 in the OLV Library and repeated at 7:00PM in School Room 101 and will run about two hours for five weeks. Enter the biblical story of the New Testamentbeginning with the gospels and working your way through the final book, Revelation. Discover God’s plan of

salvation running throughout the story and characters, both familiar and unfamiliar. It is a great way to begin New Testament studies. To learn more about this program, call John and Lucy at 947-2095 or e-mail [email protected].

MEN’S PRAYER GROUP First Monday at 8:00 PM in the church. Each month will include a different theme/topic reflecting the interestsand spiritual growth important to every Catholic. We encourage all adult men 18 and older to join us this week. “Blessed is the manwho trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. He is like a tree planted beside the water that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not theheat when it comes, its leaves stay green; in the year of the drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit.” Jeremiah 17: 7- 8.

2016 DONATIONS TO THE PARISH If you’d like a contribution statement mailed to you, we’d be happy to do so.Simply make a note on the front of your weekly envelope when you drop it in the offertory basket or call (947-1873)or email Linda ([email protected]) and it will be mailed or emailed to you, whichever you prefer. Our ability toprovide this service is just one of the reasons for you to gift-wrap your donation in a church envelope or useParishPay each week. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generous support to our parish all throughout the year.
