Saint Patrick Parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. MISSION STATEMENT

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Confessions are heard on Saturday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:15 PM and anytime upon reasonable request. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Second & fourth Sundays at 1:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar class on the third Thursday of every month. The class is held in the Religious Education Building, Room 7 at 7:30 PM. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: A process for those who wish to enter the Catholic Faith, or for present Catholic individuals who after being baptized need to receive the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. For more information, please call our Parish Office. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK: If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or home-bound, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of recon-ciliation, communion and anointing at home. TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Amos 6:1a, 4-7 Amos denounces the selfish attitude of those who surround themselves with luxuries with no concern for others. He goes on to warn that because these people lacked interest in the state of their society, they would be the first to be exiled. Second Reading: 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Paul tells Timothy to seek integrity, faith and love. Paul urges him to attain everlasting life by maintaining strong faith in Jesus and in God until Jesus returns. Gospel: Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells of a rich man who feasted daily, while a beggar named Lazarus went hungry outside his gates. When both men died, Lazarus was taken to Abraham, but the rich man was in torment. When he begged for mercy, Abraham reminded him that Lazarus had lived in torment, while the rich man lived in selfish luxury. The man then asked if Lazarus could be sent to his brothers to warn them. But Abraham said if they had not heeded Moses or the prophets, they would ignore even the warning of one risen from the dead.

A Great Chasm The rich and powerful are visited with woe and exile in today's Liturgy—not for their wealth but for their refusal to share it; not for their power but for their indifference to the suffering at their door. The complacent leaders in today's First Reading feast on fine foods and wines, reveling while the house of Joseph, the kingdom of Israel (see Amos 5:6), collapses around them. The rich man in today's Gospel also lives like a king—dressed in royal purple and fine linen (see 1 Maccabees 8:14). The rich man symbolizes Israel's failure to keep the Old Covenant, to heed the commandments of Moses and the prophets. This is the sin of the rulers in today's First Reading. Born to the nation God favored first, they could claim Abraham as their father. But for their failure to give - their inheritance is taken away. The rulers are exiled from their homeland. The rich man is punished with an exile far greater—eternity with a "great chasm" fixed between himself and God. In this world, the rich and powerful make a name for themselves (see Genesis 11:4) and dine sumptuously, while the poor remain anonymous, refused an invitation to their feasts. But notice that the Lord today knows Lazarus by name, and Joseph in his sufferings—while the leaders and the rich man have no name. Today's Liturgy is a call to repentance—to heed the warning of One who was raised from the dead. To lay hold of the eternal life He promises, we must pursue righteousness and keep the commandment of love, as Paul exhorts in today's Epistle. "The Lord loves the just," we sing in today's Psalm. And in this Eucharist we have a foretaste of the love that will be ours in the next life—when He will raise the lowly to the heavenly banquet with Abraham and the prophets (see Luke 13:28), where we too will rest our heads on the bosom of our Lord (see John 13:23). ADULT BIBLE STUDY

The Adult Bible Study has resumed regular sessions. We meet every other Thursday. Our next session will be on Oct. 6. We will be discussing Lesson 9 of Isaiah, Chapters 51-55. As always, newcomers are always welcome. We will meet from 7:30 until 9:00pm in Rm. 10 of the Religious Education Building.

Music Position Available

St. Patrick’s Church is in search of a part-time Music Coordinator/Choir Director. Responsibilities include preparing choir for one (1) weekly Sunday mass; providing music for sacramental liturgies, Holy Week and Christmas; preparing a youth choir for special events, including Christmas Eve. Qualifications: must have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in music; skill in choral conducting; ability to foster active congregational participation; proficiency in organ or keyboard desirable. St. Patrick’s is also looking for a cantor for the 12:00 noon Mass each week. This is a paid position. Applicant’s should be a High School student or older and must be able to sing confidently and in tune. Reading music is not strictly required but helpful. St. Patrick's registration for 2016-17 CYO Basketball is scheduled for September 22, from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Registration is for girls and boys from 2nd through 8th

grade, for the Instructional and the CYO Travel teams. All Instructional players are required to pay the fee at registration- $125-(parishioner) and $150-(non-parishioner). Travel registrants do not pay a registration fee until the final rosters are announced. Travel teams will have tryouts shortly after the registration of all players is completed. Travel teams consist of 4th through 8th grade players and again, dates for the tryouts will be announced shortly after the registration night. Highland Mills Food Pantry
