Legislation
• Forestry Act– Damage on soil or water should be
avoided or limited– Measures should be taken to prevent
damage on long-term nutrient status of forest soils
• The Environmental Code
• The Heritage Conservation Act
![Page 2: The role of Swedish Forest Agency in bio energy work / policy-rules-recommendations](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022052621/55862cb5d8b42a32618b4b6c/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Recommendations
• Preserve the biological diversity• Prevent acidification and nutrient
depletion of soil and run-off water• Use the ash correctly• Limit driving damages on soils and trees
and prevent insect damages• Documentation, rules and contacts with
authorities

2. Preserve biodiversity
• Leave ”eternity trees”, shrubs and old dead wood (snags)
• No WTH where endangered species could be affected negatively
• Leave slash of less common species• Leave part of the slash (> 20 %)• Avoid deep track formation near water

Limit damages on soil and trees
• Avoid damage on soil and water in connection with harvest residue extraction and ash recycling

->Ash recycling
• Most ash from non-treated wood • Limit concentrations for metals• Maximum dose• Stabilised form (= hardened ash)
– Limit value for pH/EC
• Nitrogen leaching must be avoided• Documentation

Residual extraction – notified(in reality – less)
![Page 7: The role of Swedish Forest Agency in bio energy work / policy-rules-recommendations](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022052621/55862cb5d8b42a32618b4b6c/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
How to notify Residual extraction ?
• Fill in the notify form
• Registration and control at the Swedish Forest Agency
• Don’t forget documentation

Forest residues - tops, branches and trees of no industrial value

Residues from felling stacked to dry over summer, to be chipped

Ash recycling is developing, but..

EU project “Bioenergi from forest”
Main purposeHow to make residual extraction sustainable
Focus: Bioenergy thinning and stump harvesting
• Educate 7 000 forest landowners • Educate 500 employees in the forest sector• Produce information material
