THE ROLE OF MoH ON FOOD SAFETY

Responsibility of MoH • To formulate Policies and Guidelines on Food Safety
for Good Health for the People ;
• To Coordinate with Key Stakeholders (including UN agencies, CSO’s, Educational Institutes and other
government departments/ministries) on Food Safety;
• To Disseminate Food Safety Policies and Guidelines in the Country;
Responsibility Cont’d• To Produce and Disseminate Health Educational
Messages on Food Safety;
• To Monitor and Supervise the Appropriateness of the Developed Messages.
Key Areas of Focus• Promotion of Consumption of Food Free from Disease Causing Contamination (either deliberate, accidental or incidental);
• Persuasion of Codex Alimentarius Principles to Food Processors and Consumers;
• Mainstream Gender Disparity at Household and Community Levels for Safe Food Production and Consumption;
Focus Cont’d• Streamline Road-side Food Handlers for Safety of Consumers;
• Promotion of Food Hygiene and its Preparation in Sanitary Environment.
Way Forward• Educate Masses on Potential Dangers of Various
Traces that May Occur in Foods;
• Screen All Food Handlers of Disease Causing Pathogens;
• Periodically Scout Food Processing Lines to Conform for Standards;
Way Forward Cont’d• Check-out on Food Stockiest for Expired and Adulterated Products;• Make Track of those Articles on Food Safety as
Provided for in the Ammended Public Health Act 2000;
• Coordinate with Various Line Ministries for Food Safety
• Operationalize the Food and Drug Council to Emphasize Codex Alimeterius.
