A SHEPHERD’S SCRIBBLES

“UPWARD” AWARDS NIGHT HAS BEEN MOVED

THIS YEAR, and we will conclude the season on Saturday night,

February 23. In the previous six seasons the Awards Night has been

held on Tuesday evening. Make a note of the change and plan to

share in this culminating event. Recognition will be given, entertain-

ment will be grand, and prizes will be awarded. The festivities will

begin at 6 PM in the sanctuary. If you can’t join us, then pray in

thanks over the success of another season.

WE REACHED TRIPLE DIGITS in attendance for Disci-

pleship Training this past Sunday (February 17). The adult studies

seem to be going well, and the children’s Bible Drill and Youth

Choir are providing excellent opportunities for our young people.

Thanks to all who are sharing in these times of study and training.

The Great Commission states that we are to “make disciples,” and this

hour on Sunday evening helps.

A WORD ABOUT BROTHERHOOD may be in order,

since it has been three months since our last regular monthly meeting.

You have to go all the way back to November to find the last meeting,

although we enjoyed the January Chili Supper along the way. Men,

we will be meeting next Tuesday (February 26) at 6 PM. I know you

won’t be disappointed.

THE SHARING IN THE LORD’S SUPPER on the first

Sunday during Lent this past Sunday was a vivid reminder about

where we are headed. We will share again in the Lord’s Supper on

Palm Sunday evening (March 20), Lord willing. We hope to infuse

this season with the significance of Christ’s redemptive acts.

At some point in the 1800s a man “stumbled upon” the Grand

Canyon in the territory that would one day become the state of Ari-

zona. As he neared the rim of this giant chasm and scanned the distant

sight of the other side, he remarked in wonder, “Something big hap-

pened here.” To approach the cross of Calvary, Joseph of Arimathea’s

tomb, and the rolled away stone on Easter morning, shouldn’t we real-

ize the same thing? “Something big happened here.”

in the First Baptist sanctuary

Yesterday (Sunday) was a good day. I’ve

heard this at least three times this morning and it’s not

10 am yet. Sunday was a good day with baptisms, the

observance of the Lord’s Supper, two challenging

messages, good singing from the congregation and

very special music from our Sanctuary Choir and the

girls of the Youth Choir. You missed something spe-

cial if you were not here to experience these worship

times with your church family.

The good news is that next Sunday can be just

as good, just as special. Please do your part and make

your plans now to include worship services in your

activities for this Sunday. You will be refreshed and

ready to meet the coming week’s challenges.

This Spring has started off with a busy sched-

ule, from Upward Basketball to full choir rehearsal

schedules and all points in between. Our Easter season

celebration has begun with our Lenten services each

Wednesday at noon. We are also preparing for our

Tenebrae Service on Sunday, March 24th, at 6 pm.

Our Easter service schedule will be announced soon.

Registration for the Oklahoma Trip (Phil Waldrep Con-

ference) for our church only will end this Friday, Feb-

ruary 15th! It will then be opened up for other churches

and groups (and you late stragglers!) until March 6th. Registration fee $25.00 per person. Sign-up sheet will be

on the piano-side bulletin board.

B.A.L.L. Club meets Tuesday, March 5th. This is our St.

Patrick’s Day theme covered dish luncheon. Mrs. Martha

Taylor, the speaker, will enlighten us with what is the sig-

nificance of this Irish holiday. Bring a dish, wear green, or

get pinched! Did you have this same custom when you

were a kid?

The Senior Adult Rally in Monticello, MS, will be Tues-

day, March 12th, with lunch at the Country Fisherman in Prentiss, MS. We will leave @ 7:45 a.m., attend the meet-

ing from 9:00 until 11:30 a.m., and then do lunch on the

way back home. Bring your lunch money. Sign-up sheet will be posted in March on the piano-side bulletin board.

Don’t forget to include our Lord in your activities this

week!

World Day of Prayer

Once every 7 years our church hosts the World Day of Prayer in Columbia and Marion County. This is our year and the date is March 1 at 10:00 a.m. in our sanctuary. This year the program materials have been written by the World Day of Prayer Committee from France and will be presented by 16 churches in our area. The title is “I was a stranger and you wel-comed me.” Bring a salad or dessert and join us for lunch.
