CNN reports that Colorado’s Center on Law and Policy estimated that legalization would yield $60 million in state and local revenue by 2017. Judge John Kane, a U.S. district judge in Colorado, voices his forecast for marijuana legalization stating, “The law is simply going to die
before it’s repealed. It will just go into disuse…it’s a cultural force, and you simply cannot legislate against a cultural force.” According to CNN, an interview with Judge Kane suggested that he had concern for the violence associated with pot 5$#& C#'0##,& '"/-.*9#"$& /,%& 9),:pins, but he conceded that possession laws were endangered in the United States.D/$(),:'+,B$& E-.*#& +-& F),/,

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The State University of New York College at Potsdam is currently undergoing its largest expansion since the completion of the Crane complex in 1970. With the construction of the new
Performing Arts building and the renovations to Maxcy Ice Arena, SUNY Potsdam begins a campuswide expansion and renovation plan scheduled to coincide with the college’s bicentennial in 2016.“The school is looking to be
on track with its bicentennial plan which seeks to solidify SUNY Potsdam in higher education,” said
Ryan Williams, president of the Student Government Association. The current projects are only the

The move frees up space to temporarily house other departments as SUNY Potsdam begins the process of renovating and updating every building on campus. According to the Facilities Mas

Changes in loans students may not be aware of1$22"*3&4$*0,5.6$*066&4"*"/0,
Student loans are a concern for college students across the nation. Changes in policies about student loans occur often, but students are usually not aware of them. According to American Student Assistance, nearly 60 percent of students borrow money annually to cover the costs of a college education. Changes such as interest rates and availablity of types of loans often (66()$%$,('"%!*-*)'-.%-'5%5()'#'0*#7“Grace periods for student

off a semester because of an illness, the time he or she is away from school counts towards the loan’s grace period. Students should be made aware of this and plan accordingly. The difference between subsi
dized and unsubsidized Stafford loans is important to know because it affects how much interest students will be paying back. Sub

President Barack Obama kept subsidized loans at a low interest rate. He lobbied to extend the 3.4 percent interest rate for subsidized loans last year, as opposed to a much higher 6.8 percent rate, which is the interest rate of unsubsidized loans. However, this extension expires
on July 1, 2013, unless Congress and the president renew it again. At that time, interest rates for subsidized loans will jump back up to 6.8 percent for the 20132014 school year without further legislation.>?$@#%,-"5%$0%!*5%62*5'*=%$0%A((&%

Yes, I know it has been a while since I have put out a fashion pick of the week, but without further a due my fashion pick for the last issue of the semester is Kareem Tappin! Arnold explained the reasoning behind PACE’S policy of not allowing employees to take food home. “I worked in places where they do [allow employees to take food home. I would love to tell you it wouldn’t effect how the employees behave, but that’s not true. It’s almost an incentive for the employee to ensure there is waste at the end of the night.” Arnold went on to explain that
PACES is unable to give the foodtofood banks is because the North Country lacks the resources that cities do to allow such transactions.“In cities, the food bank could
get the leftover food by using a P,0.5% ,-"1.(##% )("$'!)-$(3@% +,'),%would release us from all liability for the food if someone were to get sick. To give food away you need someone to sign off on it.” Food donated to food banks is
inspected by professionals who as
sess the food, throw away unsalvageable items, and reprocess what is left to be redistributed the next day.“We don’t have something like
that in the north country,” Arnold said. Arnold said that in the absence
of such a service for the past decade PACES has been moving more and more towards madetoorder food to reduce waste.“Mediterrano’s, Chip’s, Fifth

ers, but it is usually preconsumer waste, food that doesn’t get put out for students, rather than postconsumer waste. Vegetable scraps and other leftovers from the Bow
men kitchen, which prepares much of the campus food, go back to the farmers. Oil is also sent back to farmers to be converted into fuel. “We must follow codes strict on
what could be a risk,”Arnold said. “Do we throw away food that I would personally eat? Yes. Do we throw away the food that the Board of Health tells us to? Yes.” Arnold said that if a student
group on campus was interested in making a food bank agreement happen, PACES would be willing to work with the group.

B;"*%"&)":":0J.-8$6C0,
We’ve all heard it. The world is allegedly coming to an end in December 2012. It was also going to come to an end May 2011. And June 2006. And May 2003. And January 2000. They go back farther than that. The end of the world has been predicted since it began and in the age of the Internet it is easier than ever to spread these theories around. But fear not. Though doomsayers and fear mongers say otherwise, the world will be intact on December 22 and most of you will be back at SUNY Potsdam for the spring 2013 semester. The experts over at NASA have
printed a nifty little list on their website debunking all theories tied to the supposed impending doomsday, and an extended version can be found at www.nasa.gov and the following comes from their website:The most popular of which
seems to be the Mayan Calendar ending. However, this is untrue. The Mayan calendar does not predict end times. Just like our calendar ends on December 31 and begins again, so does theirs. They simply measure time differently. The December 21 conspiracy
did not begin with the Mayan Calendar. It began with a woman who claimed to communicate with aliens on the planet Nibiru who told her that they would be hitting Earth in May 2003. When that didn’t
Why the world won’t be ending
happen she claimed she heard their message wrong and said December 2012 would be the big day. There is no upcoming planetary
alignment, and even if there were there would be little to no impact on the earth. Each December the Earth and Sun line up with the center of the Milky Way but that has absolutely no effect on the earth. A reversal in the rotation of
Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was theorized to be near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a baitandswitch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity
of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. Scientists believe a magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia.

the Bears downed the Clarkson
Golden Knights (31) 7765 in their
home opener. Senior guard Mark

lows) scored a gamehigh 23 points
to lead Potsdam and junior forward
Rob Duquette (Peru, N.Y./Peru)
recorded a doubledouble with 14
points and 11 boards.
Potsdam jumped out to a 20
lead on a layup from Lake 18 sec
onds into the contest and never
trailed. A jumper by junior forward
Colin Peterson (Hilton, N.Y./Hil
ton) gave the Bears a 158 advan

answered with a 60 run capped by
a junior guard Marques Charlton
(Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) to get
to within 1514. Freshman guard
Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./
Greenwich) sparked a 92 Potsdam
response witha threepointer with
10:28 left. Three minutes later,
another layup from Lake gave the
Bears an eightpoint, 2416 lead,
their largest of the half.
Potsdam kept Clarkson at arm’s
length the rest of the half and took a
3733 lead into the break.
Strong shooting from the Golden
Knights early in the second half got
them to within 4140 at the 17:34
mark. The Bears built their lead
back to 5144 with a short barrage
including a three from Peterson
and a loud dunk from senior cap
tain Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn, N.Y./
George Westinghouse Vocational).
However, Clarkson wouldn’t go
away. Two free throws from for
ward Jerry Coleman (Potsdam,
N.Y./Potsdam) trimmed the Pots
dam lead to 5251 with 10:18 on
the clock. Another Bears burst gave
them a 6455 lead with just over
four minutes to play. Lake iced the
contest with a jumper at 1:11. Pots
dam added a few more points from
the free throw line to close out the

Bears Head Coach Sherry Dobbs
was pleased with his team at both
ends of the court.
“I was most happy with our de

Coach Sherry Dobbs. “I thought
Zac Adams (Potsdam, N.Y./Pots

basketball and was really a key for
us. He did exactly what we asked

Dobbs also had plenty of praise
for his offensive stars.
“I thought Mark and Colin both
made shots at times of the game
where we needed to make plays,”
added Dobbs. “They shot the ball
well. Mark made some plays down
the stretch where we needed a bas
ket. He’s got the ability to get to the
rim, which really helped us and Joe
Estramonte did some good things
as a point guard and made some
plays for us. We’re pleased with
the progress we’ve made and now
we’ve got to build off that into the
weekend.”

Squats and Lunges. I like to
get the most bang for my exercise
buck, and these two exercises work
a lot of muscle groups all at once.
There are hundreds of varieties of
squats and lunges (check out www.
exrc.net for examples), but they all
work the muscles of the upper leg
and hip. Use your body weight, use
a medicine ball, use dumbbells, use
your roommate whatever you have
to challenge yourself.
Fitness Watches. I could not
function without my running
watch. I time something everyday.
It could be crunches for 60 sec

watch with a stop watch function is
a workout waiting to happen. My
all time favorite? Iron Man by Ti

version, so ladies you don’t have to
wear a giant camo watch on your
wrist! Plenty of colors and oh,
yes… around $15.

to lose weight. Water is always a
good choice, but sometimes you
