SUNY Potsdam will soon be joining over 100 other universities in implementing a new system that allows people of differing sexes to room together in a dorm building. Eleven are dead in what has been described as a “posttropical” superstorm that hit the east coast on Monday, October 29th. storm surge set records in Lower O:2#:"":2K& D#$%$& P!!+$+& *'N*":tions caused a widespread power outage.” Both sides of the Long Island Sound had swamped beachfronts and Virginia to Cape Cod was hit with hurricaneforce winds as Sandy came ashore. Here at SUNY Potsdam, wind

mixed with rain hit the campus and surrounding town and the buildings suffered through a threehourlong power outage. The town of Potsdam did not suffer any power outages and students were able to get food delivered to them from the town. Students reacted in a calm matter, some choosing to gather in the Union, which had not lost power.Downstate New York is still

without power in many areas as of October 30. Sandy’s wrath hit some places harder than others and even prompted the evacuation of 200 patients from NYU Langone Medical Center. There is still no word about when the medical center will be able to support patients again. The hospital spokeswoman Lisa Greiner commented, “We are having intermittent telephone access issues, and for this reason the receiving hospital will notify the families of their arrival.” Other #!*F)":/*& #:3$& %$F!%"$+& P!!+)2(&and other problems due to Sandy that has caused them to evacuate as well. East Coast Faces Deadly SuperstormCity Mayor Lorenzo Langford told CNN, “There were too many people” who didn’t heed instructions to evacuate, and he urged anyone still in town to “hunker down and try to wait this thing out.” In New York, a record has been broken by a 14foot tide that was recorded in lower Manhattan’s Battery Park. This smashes the record by 3feet, previously set during Hurricane Donna. The city halted both bus and train lines prior to the arrival of the storm, closing schools and ordering 400,000 people to evacuate their homes in lowlying areas of Manhattan and elsewhere. Besides the water seeping into subway stations in Lower Manhattan, water has also found its way into Brooklyn through a tunnel connecting it and Lower Manhattan. High winds also damaged a crane perched atop a Midtown skyscraper under construction, forcing even more to evacuate.New York Mayor Michael

Bloomberg told reporters there was an “extraordinary” amount of wa

ter in Lower Manhattan, as well as downed trees throughout the city and widespread power outages. “We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations,” he said. “The worst of the weather has come, and the city certainly is feeling the impacts.”Sandy was blamed for over 2.8

million power outages across the Northeast. 350,000 were in the New S!%I&;)"4&:%$:1&L"&/$:*"&-3$&F$!F/$&have been killed in New York as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Three were killed when trees fell onto their homes. In West Virginia, a D!0:2&D:*&I)//$+&D#$2&-3$&)2.#$*&of snow was dumped on the town of Davis, causing a car accident that ended her life. Before hitting land, Sandy over

whelmed the sailing ship HMS Bounty, a replica of the historic British vessel, off North Carolina. Fourteen of the ship’s crew of 16 was rescued, but the body of one deckhand was found Monday evening and the ship’s captain was still missing Monday night, the Coast Guard reported. Sandy has claimed 67 lives in the

Caribbean, including 51 in Haiti. Sandy was apparently boosted

by the full moon on Monday night, which already brings the highest tides of the month. With all the destruction, many

schools still remain closed, as does mass transit in New York city, and power outages are still found in certain areas. Based on pressure readings, it was reported that Sandy was likely to be the strongest storm to make landfall north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, CNN senior meteorologist Dave Hennen said. The benchmark storm, the 1938 “Long Island Express” Hurricane, contained a lowpressure reading of 946 millibars; Sandy had a minimum pressure of 943 millibars. Meteorologists from CNN claim that the “lower the pressure, the stronger the storm will hit.”The arrival of the storm has also

affected the Presidential election, with both Obama and Romney being forced to cancel several campaign stops. President Obama had this to say about the storm, “The most important message I have for the public right now is please listen to what your state and local !,-.):/*&:%$&*:4)2(1&A#$2&"#$4&"$//&you to evacuate, you need to evacuate.” Romney commented as well, asking for donations to be dropped

off at his “victory centers” for the victims of Sandy. He went on to comment to CNN, “There are families in harm’s way that will be hurt either in their possessions or perhaps in something more severe.”Hurricane Sandy was expected

to weaken once it moved inland, but the center of the storm was expected to continue move slowly northward, meaning gusty winds and heavy rain would continue through Wednesday. Monday brought 23 states under a warning or advisory for wind related to Sandy. Thou*:2+*&!,&P)(#"*&D$%$&.:2.$//$+&:2+&many people’s lives were impacted :*&#)(#D:4*&:2+&%!:+*&D$%$&P!!+$+&and schools were canceled. Power outages forced many to wait out the storm in the dark. Upon attending the Diversity and Social Justice conference this past weekend, I was struck by the lack of diversity I witnessed throughout the event. Racial minorities, gay people, the handicapped, and those who care about them had all gathered together beginning at 9 a.m. on a Saturday to present posters and attend seminars on niche topics related to diversity and inclusiveness, whilst a considerable percentage of the campus was hung over or sleeping in.Throughout the time I have spent

at this school, I have noticed that, with remarkable consistency, there seems to exist a general failure to blend members of outcast groups with those who already enjoy widespread social acceptance to any meaningful extent. AfricanAmericans tend to walk in their distinct groups as they travel across campus, seeming isolated and somewhat out of place. The handicapped

are pitied in public, and condescended to in private, just as before. Homosexuals, especially of the more effeminate variety, seem to branch out only so far in the friendships they form and the acceptance they garner. They will successfully earn the friendship of women and certain others, but the convictions of their most potent social adversaries will remain unchanged. Publicly, the code of political

correctness we are coerced into embracing shields the more vulnerable members of the campus from the most overt indicators of their own exclusion, making the relatively isolated experience of their college education more pleasant. But just under the surface of everyday life, exists the same reality that many students hoped they would leave behind at their respective high schools. Anyone who in private still nurtures their own prejudices need not look very far so that

)"#0$ 1+0$ '23$ (+1+4+3#4.#$ 5.)"$those who share their distaste for this group or that. Should I choose to, I can easily locate a person who openly lacks respect for women, who is disgusted with homosexuality, who is racist and not ashamed of it. They will make their intolerant remarks with indifference and without consequence. This remains commonplace at this school, and I suspect most others, despite the campus rhetoric and appearances to the contrary. And so in gathering the op

pressed together early on a Saturday morning, while many of the more socially integrated members of our campus doze off in their twinsized beds, most of whom, I feel, remain unaware of the con&#4#2(#$.2$)"#$'4/)$67+(#8$5#$)-42$+$collective blind eye to the fact that these sorts of gatherings have little if any effect on the state of things. The total amount of compassion

that exists in the minds of the students does not increase by any appreciable amount when people who tend to hold very similar beliefs accumulate in one area to hear those /+1#$9#7.#&/$4#:#()#3$9+(;$+)$)"#1<$$The members of the student body

who tend to be the least compassionate were mostly or completely missing from this event. And it is for this reason that I must conclude that such events are in many respects a waste of time. There may be many exceptions to the social tendencies I have just outlined, but they are just that, the exception. Meaningful empathy has yet to materialize on any scale worth talking about in respect to the issues I raise. Instead, we have been lulled into hiding our prejudices more effectively than before, while better pretending that things are really changing.

ANONYMOUS STUDENT

Student speaks: Potsdam and Diversity

I am writing with great displeasure about an oped that ran in the previous issue of The Racquette, entitled “Seagulls: The Menace of SUNY Potsdam.” The author is so clearly wrong about these majestic creatures that inhabit our campus, and how dare she suggest that seagulls can only hang out in places like McDonald’s and Walmart parking lots. What are they, white feathered trash? I believe the author has the

seagulls confused with the pigeons we sometimes see on campus, often referred to by professional ornithologists as the vagrants of the bird community. Seagulls only dine on the best, and since Potsdam was recently rated number one in SUNY for food (and probably dead last for everything else), that would explain their continued presence on campus. This is why I think we should

go “Full Seagull” here at SUNY Potsdam. We shouldn’t be the Bears. Let’s leave that for Baylor. I bet you no college team has the Seagulls as their mascot, and that is a miscarriage of justice greater than that time this school gave a racist professor tenure.

Seagulls poop where they want, they take what they want, and they don’t take no crap from nobody. Seagulls are badass mofos, and they’ll let you know how tough they are if you ask them. They should be our mascot, on our posters, on any and all SUNY Potsdam advertising collateral, just fricking seagulls everywhere. Seagulls as far as the eye can see. And if you’re not wearing seagull paraphernalia, you’re like those lowly, disease riddled miscreants, the pigeons, and should probably kill yourself. And if you’re not sold on having

more seagulls on campus, chew on this: Currently Minerva is kind of our mascot, but we share her with UAlbany, and SUNY Central has demonstrated since time immemorial that they prefer UAlbany to SUNY Potsdam. Remember that time the former SUNY Chancellor was exiled here and not UAlbany or other campuses for a year as our president and then he never left his %&'(#= Just recently SUNY Central

announced they are looking to cut some of our funding to give to UAlbany, all the while forcing us into a soft merger with SUNY Canton. I

know. I know. UAlbany has some seriously awesome technology on their campus, it’s one of a two places in the world with a super expensive laser. A laser so powerful that it can make anyone forget you’re living in the city of Albany and will be mugged every time you step off their downtown campus (or anywhere south of their uptown campus) when the sun goes down. SUNY Central has a hardon for

UAlbany and not us, so why should we share Minerva with UAlbany? Besides, Minerva is to Athena as Oasis is to The Beatles. And who wants a second rate cover band representing you when you have a campus littered with these majestic creatures from the sky? At least when the seagulls poop,

they produce something for children to gather around and admire. What does Minerva do but awkwardly look at the ground outside of our science building? Seagulls produce something tangible, and if we’re being honest, that’s probably why they’re actually here because Potsdam is an inviting place to poop. I would like to conclude by say

ing that there is nothing wrong with

feeding and talking to the seagulls. You should take every opportunity to feed and speak with them, for they are very wise creatures. So far, while I’ve been back at

Potsdam, the seagulls have told me that eating out of the dumpster by the student union after 2 a.m. is a totally legit thing to do, it’s ok to squawk at members of the opposite sex whom you think are attractive, and if you see a piece of food on )"#$:%%48$+23$+$4.>+7$/##/$)"#$/+1#$piece of food, you better snatch that up before your rival does. It also doesn’t hurt to brag to your rival about how you beat them to that same piece of food, and to do so as loud as humanly possible. In fact, you should squawk about it for a couple of hours to let the whole campus know of your victory. There are valuable things we can

learn from these seagulls, and we shouldn’t chase them away because %2#$6#4/%2$'23/$ )"#1$3-198$-?70$to look at, and annoying. If we’re going to do that to the seagulls for these reasons, why can’t we do that to the freshman too?

In 1996, the music scene was exploding with mainstream rock songs by bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and Alanis Morissette; after climbing the ranks of college radios the band Cake emerged with a platinum album and wonderful reviews. The singing and wit involved in the lyrics make everything said come off in a way that is calm, cool, and collective, which may explain the immense success that the band enjoyed during their glory days.Cake’s style of music is far

from traditional. They break many music theory boundaries regarding note composition that may seem peculiar on paper but

when heard in the songs work quite well. In fact, I was playing this album in proximity of several Cranie housemates and on several occasions their ears perked up from curiosity. It may seem odd to your professors, but then again progressive music always seems bizarre to past generations.Clearly this band knows what

they’re doing both lyrically and musically. They create a funky plethora of songs that make you rock out to every time you hear them. Snell Hall was full of eager A Sharp Arrangement fans last Friday night for their annual invitational performance. The October 26 performance

included the Sharps themselves, with performances by the Potsdam Pitches and the Potsdam Pointecounts along with a special appearance from Syracuse University’s entirely male group Orange Appeal. Despite a slight sound issue at

the beginning of the performance, the Sharps brought their A–game that night. Their material was spoton the entire time they were on stage, and brought the house down from the beginning, when they opened with Celina Furman taking lead vocal on Usher’s “Scream.”The chemistry between the girls

While all the girls were very talented and gave wonderful performances, there were some performances that completely stood out. Angela Bove’s performance of “Wild Young Hearts” was a crowd pleaser. Her melodic voice and unbeatable stage presence made her stand out not only during her solo but also throughout the entire show. Regain focus from midsemester slump!"#$%#&'#(#()

*+,-./0)1It’s the middle of the semester

and the seasons are changing, the weather is getting colder, and midterms are upon us. It’s not unusual for the midsemester slump to start affecting students around this time of year. Here are some ideas on how to get through these next few weeks until you’re home for Thanksgiving break.Form study groups: Early alerts

just passed, and you’ve just found out you weren’t doing as well in American History as you thought. You are not alone there. Especially in larger lecture halls, you are probably not the only person who got an alert. Form a group and study a few times a week for that next exam to get yourself out of the dark. This will also help you meet new people.Meet with your professors:

Professors are here to help you. To freshmen, professors might seem unapproachable, but they are here

for a reasonthey want to see you learn! If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask them or make an appointment to speak with them.Advisors: Your advisor is your

friend. If you are struggling in a class they can help you more than you might be able to imagine. They are able to point you in the right !"#$%&"'()*(!)%*()+$,-).'/)0(!)&+$)kind of classes you feel more comfortable in. I’m very good in lecture hall courses and over the past three years my advisor has helped 1$)0(!)*,&$#(*&$)%'/#2$23)4&52)#$*,,.)helped my GPA, and has helped me avoid my own slumps!Relax: It’s a hard time of the year

for everyone, and stressing doesn’t make it any easier. Make time for yourself every single day. Whether it’s watching a movie, enjoying a cup of coffee, or just taking a moment to yourself to breathe, always allow yourself that moment in the day to remind yourself that everything is going to be okay.

Masters of Masters and Johnson fame to campus in 1983, he discussed masturbation as part of his presentation. While recognizing that “masturbation was one of the most taboo topics on college campuses” (at that time), Dr. Masters presented a positive stance on masturbation as a way of learning about your body and your sexuality. Spiritual Differences PanelO#1=)3&N".50'6$51.,+5.$D&E1.5)1

On Thursday, November 8, at 7 p.m. in the Student Union’s Fireside Lounge, the Campus Ministry '<0%$)*(!) &+$)?"("2&$#"*,)@22'%"*tion of Potsdam will be sponsoring a panel discussion titled, “Spiritual Differences.” There will be a panel of seven people of differing beliefs. The areas that will be represented are Roman Catholics, nondenominational Christian, Presbyterian, Atheist, Jewish, Mormon, and Muslim. Each person will tell why they believe what they believe, and then there will be a time for ques

tions from the audience. At the end, refreshments will be served.Maybe you are struggling with

a faith you had prior to coming to college and would like to investigate other beliefs. Maybe you want to investigate further into what you already believe. In any case, there will be many questions that will arise from the presentations of such diverse backgrounds. Spiritual growth can be a help to

those who are seeking or who want a “closer walk” in their faith belief. In any case, you are invited to attend a wonderful evening of sharing and growth.

Annie Says: DIY dorm room crafts

!$$.)&N".50'6--)D)&P.8)&2%.561

I love to make my own crafts, especially when I am bored sitting around in my room. I needed some new ideas, so I looked to the internet for some. I typed in “DIY dorm crafts” and found a bunch of neat ideas. I provided pictures for each of these crafts as well. A+$)0#2&)#$*,,.)($*&)"!$*)4)%*1$)

across was a great way to organize cords for your computer. If you are anything like me, you have an

Ethernet cord, cell phone charger, and computer charger. The problem is when you unplug the cord from your phone or computer, the cord ends up on the ground and just looks messy. I wouldn’t really consider this idea a DIY craft because there is no crafting involved, but it is a great idea of a way to keep all those cords organized. The idea is to take a clip that holds paper together and clip it to the edge of your !$2B)'#)*#$*)8+$#$).'/)0(!)&+*&)*)lot of your cords end up. You then place the end of the cord in the little

hole of the clip so you never lose it when you need it. Genius.I spend a lot of time at my desk.

My favorite part of my room are the decorations, so when I came across this next craft I thought it was the perfect accessory for my desk. It is very simple to make. All you need is an empty picture frame and a white board marker. The idea is to take a picture frame, put a piece of paper in the frame, then draw on the glass as you could with a white

board. The picture I provided for this craft shows a piece of notebook paper in the glass which makes for a cute dorm room accessory that friends can write on. So cute! This last DIY craft I have for you

is more geared towards the ladies. It is a homemade recipe for eye makeup remover. Sometimes buying makeup remover all the time can really add up, so now with this easy to make mixture you can make it at home. You will need 1 cup of water, 1 ½ tablespoons of Tear Free Baby Shampoo, and 1/8

teaspoon of baby oil. Put those ingredients together and stir. Make sure to shake well before each use. I am not a makeup wearer usually, but I know when I am trying to take off that waterproof mascara that it isn’t exactly easy without makeup remover. With the weekend ahead of you,

now you have no reason to be bored; you have three new DIY crafts to try. Have a crafty weekend!

Participate in Potsdam Appreciation Week!$$.)&N".50'6--)D)&P.8)&2%.561

Next week, November 59, is the beginning of Potsdam Appreciation Week, also known as PAW. If you are not familiar with PAW, it is a week completely devoted to appreciating SUNY Potsdam students, staff, faculty, and organizations. These events will take place in the Union from 11 a.m. 2 p.m. for the whole week. Each day there will be new activities and new ways to show your appreciation to SUNY Potsdam. We can thank Emerging Leaders for sponsoring this week full of fun and devotion to every aspect of this campus. Each day will be something different for everyone to partake in. It has been a lot of fun in past years, and I am sure it is going to be another hit and hopefully raise a lot of money, but this can only be done with your help. Every day will be devoted to ap

preciating SUNY Potsdam. Monday will be about appreciating the students. In the Union, you can purchase a hug/kissgram or a magnet for a friend, or be sung to by Greg Shilling, and there will also be vari'/2)$:$(&2)2/%+)*2)*)+"6+70:$)9''&+)and a cotton candy stand. Tuesday will be devoted to ap

preciating the faculty here on campus. Along with having a bake sale, you can also send your favorite professor an applegram. You will also have a chance to vote for your fa

vorite professor and show appreciation for your favorite department. Wednesday is all about appreci

ating student groups. At the Coin Carnival you can play games and win prizes, and don’t forget to vote for the most spirited group at Potsdam. Thursday you can appreciate

the staff by sending a free note of thanks or vote for your favorite staff members. Last, but not least, Friday will

be Potsdam Pride Day, where students and staff wear Potsdam gear all day to show their appreciation to the school. Wear your maroon colors, and you can even face paint a bear paw on your cheek; go all out and show your pride! The Union will be giving out free cocoa, and while you are there, make your own memory keepsake.PAW is a great way to show your

appreciation and devotion to SUNY Potsdam. With so many fun activities and games, it is no wonder why we love Potsdam so much. The best part about it: all money collected during the week will go toward the Student gift, voted by the student body, supporting the Greatest Needs of the college. Next week, be sure to spend some time in the Union to show your appreciation. Send out an applegram to your favorite teacher, wear your Potsdam gear, or just say thank you to the staff and faculty.

He ended up with three SUNYAC AllRookie team selections, the SUNYAC’s top rookie scorers and the Bears’ second playoff berth in his threeyear tenure. “We were fortunate to have a

number of players step up and play large roles. Erick Ware (Huntsville, Ala./Kenai River Brown Bears) led the conference in scoring by a defenseman, and Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta Jr. 1)$2"0%3& /)$%"(+& /#%0& $)& 0"(& 45NYAC in overall rookie scoring,” said Bernard. “Kevin McFarland set our single season record in save percentage (.915). Those sort of guys emerged for us last season.” Those players created some of

the Bears’ most memorable moments last year, but Potsdam still struggled with its consistency. Different Bears teams tended to show up weekend to weekend, at home or on the road. “Consistency has to be a hallmark of our play,” Bernard said. “We played with effort. We played with energy. We played with unity on given weekends through all six periods. But then we wouldn’t see that the following weekend, especially on the road where our record was abysmal. ing an $8.7 million renovation this year, the Bears will play their 10 home games at Massena Arena and practice in Clarkson University’s Cheel Arena. Bernard is appreciative of the support he has gotten from around the North Country to turn an inconvenience into an opportunity to gain new fans. “We’re really grateful that the

people in Massena and at Clarkson have welcomed us with open arms. It makes me proud to be a North Country native and be associated with institutions that are willing to be so accommodating,” said Bernard. “People in the area want to see hockey and I believe that they’re going to come out and see ,"*0&,(&"*9(7& :&*;&-.)/+()0& 0"*0&we’ll give them a quality product that they’ll want to comeback and see again.” Potsdam has several familiar

faces to lead the Bears into the new season. Seniors Matt Viola (Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Vipers) and Brett Waters (Uxbridge, Ontario/Markham Waxers) will serve as captains, while juniors Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) and Nick Avgerinos (Bolton, Ontario/Georgetown Raiders) will don the “A’s” this season. Bernard is pleased with the quartet. “We’ve got a great mix of personalities with our four captains,” Bernard said. “In them we have guys that any of our players can connect with. They each bring something different to the table in their demeanor and leadership characteristics, but all of them provide something essential for the team to have success.” The Bears will look forward to

Viola (31417) and Arnold (10313) each had careerhighs in points and look to improve upon their totals in 201213. Sophomores Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution) (11011), Vinny Buttitta (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/New York Apple Core) (336), and Ryan Miller (Didsbury, Alberta/Arizona State) round out the veteran forwards, (*-"& "*9$)2& %(()& %$2)$/-*)0& ?<*6ing time last season. up front are six new faces. The most notable is Plattsburgh transfer Zach Blake (Campbellford, Ontario/Wellington Dukes). Blake saw action in just four games with the Cardinals last year, scoring a goal and recording an assist. Billy Pascalli

(Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) joins Potsdam fresh off of an MVP season in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, where he was the league’s high scorer. tremendously solid,” Bernard said. “We have proven players back there. We have guys who have played through adversity and responded well to it.” Of the eight blue liners on the roster, seven are veterans. Waters, Ware and Avgerinos stand out for the Bears on defense. Waters played in all but one of Potsdam’s 26 contests last season, scoring a powerplay goal and recording four assists. As a freshman, Ware not only

proved that he could handle the puck in the defensive zone, but also accurately distribute it from the

point, earning himself AllSUNYAC recognition. A steady defender, Avgerinos

The only rookie to join the de
