Page 2: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

The quick passing game is the “BREAD AND

BUTTER” of our offense. We must be able to

execute this package anywhere on the field. In this

package we want aggressive blocks by the linemen,

crisp routes by receivers,

and quick decisions by

the quarterback. We

want the ball in the

receiver’s hands as

quickly as possible.

Philosophy:

Page 3: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

1. EFFICIENT, CONSISTENT, AND “BALL-PROTECTIVE.” A

higher percentage of positive plays, more yards per play, and a

lower percentage of “disaster plays” then any other phase of our

offense.

2. CREATES BALANCE

A high-percentage, safe way to balance the running game &

keep defenses out of 6- and 7-man fronts.

3. FORCES DEFENSE TO COVER ENTIRE FIELD

It creates a sideline-to-sideline “stretch” of the defense that

widens lanes between people, in turn helping other aspects of

your offense.

Benefits Of The Quick Passing Game

Page 4: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

4. LIMITS IMPACT OF DEVASTATING RUSHERS &

EFFECTIVENESS OF STUNTS

A quick rhythm and short launching point dramatically help

protection.

5. PROVIDES SOUND BLITZ ANSWERS

Allows us to aggressively attack and exploit the blitz, creating

simple, ready-made answers that our QB can understand, our

WR can execute, and our OL can protect. A high number of

edge throws provide answers for zone blitzes as well.

6. GETS BALL IN HANDS OF BEST ATHLETES

Benefits Of The Quick Passing Game

Defensive Answers To Our Quick Passing Game

1. They will give up the 5 or 6 yard completion and

think of tackling our receiver at that yardage. If

the defensive coordinator has done his

homework, they will realize that half of all

passing yardage comes AFTER THE CATCH.

So a 5 or 6 yard catch will usually turn into a 10

- 12 yard play. We will take that!

Page 6: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

2. They will play a 2 deep concept with either zone or man underneath. Either of these might force us to throw the fade route. We can do this, but we would prefer to run the football against this coverage. The reason being, with 4 wide-outs it would take 6 people to cover them. This puts only 5 in the box, and gives us a great opportunity to run the football. Our fade-flat and Double-slant combinations should still work effectively.

Defensive Answers to Our Quick Passing Game

Page 7: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

3. Blitz! If the first two theories do not work for

them they will go to the blitz theory. If they

bring 6 we can block that, 7 is the problem. If

they use 4 across coverage, the QB has to make

a decision. One, get the ball off before they get

to him, or two bring in an extra player for

protection. **REMEMBER this is man to man,

no help, if the DB makes one little mistake it is 6

points.**

Coaching the Quarterback in the Quick Package

• Footwork 1. Throwing to the Right – Pop your feet, get shoulder to target

2. Throwing to the Left – Cross over right behind left; Open Hips

• Read 1. Uncovered

2. Softest corner

3. Throw away form strength of the defense

4. On the hitch and out, read shoulders of flat defender

5. Throw hitch or out vs. loose corner

6. Run the ball vs. Cover 2 or 5, or check into flat/fade or Double/slant

7. Throw fade at 18-20 yards

Page 11: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

• A.M.F- This is for both the wingbacks and the wide receivers. If a

defender is within 5 yards on a hitch route or out route, beat him deep.

Or, if his feet do not move on your up field release, work to get over

top and make a decision at your break point.

• D.A.- This rules are for the wings, if the defender over you plays

wide or on the snap of the ball flies out to cover the flats, just open up

to the QB, staying 3-4 yards from LOS.

Quick Package Receiver Rules

Page 12: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

• 30-Under, Push vertical one yard, pause and come flat aiming for a

point 3-5 yards deep over #2, vs. Zone find the hole, vs. Man use stay on the move.

• 31-Read Slant, Loose defender (Cover 3 or 4)- Attack the defender

five yards vertically, break off your outside foot aiming for 12 yards on the hash, should catch the ball at 7-9 yards.

Tight defender (Cover 1 or 2)-Work inside and vertical to five yards, break off outside foot, adjust angle to flatten, holding the DB on your back, bal should be caught 5-6 yards deep.

• 32-Hitch, Drive 6 yards at the DB’s technique, sell vertical burst,

plant off outside foot, come back down your stem. Follow A.M.F. rules. Convert to fade if corner does not move his feet.

• 39-Fade, Read Coverage: Cover 2 & 5 Outside release, stay wide find

hole b/w safety and corner. Cover 1 attack the DB technique. Release outside, staying on the bottom of the numbers, QB will lead you over the outside shoulder.

Coaching the Split Ends in the Quick Package

Page 13: The Quick Passing Game From Shotgun

• Doubles Formation Your route will compliment the Split End’s route

• 30-Slip, Push Vertical at the defenders inside shoulder, slip inside,

immediately get vertical, you must go inside.

• 31-Slant, Push vertical for three yards, break off outside foot, come

inside the defender, holding him on your back.

• 32-Hitch, Drive 6 yards at the DB’s technique, sell vertical burst,

plant off outside foot, come back down your stem. Follow A.M.F. rules.

Convert to fade if corner does not move his feet.

• 39-Flat, Push vertically four yards, speed cut out-dip your outside

shoulder and rollover your inside foot, you should be 6 yards deep, stay

parallel to the LOS.

this case the W Receiver, to adapt to the quick game call. If X

fade were tagged W would run the 5 yard out

•This packaging allows the slant against Cover 2 and the Hitch

against Cover 3.
