Fall is in the air and with that comes one of my most favorite times of year at the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing (IVMSON)—Homecoming. Homecoming is always a special time for us as we reflect back on the thousands of graduates who have helped make our school what it is today, and look forward to the numerous possibilities that lie ahead for our students.

One of my most favorite memories from last year’s Homecoming was watching our students connect with alumni from the class of 1960. It was special to see the unique bond that nursing creates; regardless of the numerous differences between the groups, their mutual love for the profession and commitment to caring for others united them.

That’s what Homecoming is about! It’s about remembering and celebrating your roots, and for us as a school of nursing, our roots are planted firmly in Ida Moffett’s vision for nursing excellence. Whether you are a Birmingham Baptist or Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing graduate, you reflect the core values and beliefs she held so dear – academic excellence, caring, compassion and service. These foundational values and beliefs are important and serve as the “golden thread” that holds together the IVMSON from one generation of graduates to the next.

In this issue, we highlight the Moffett Nurse Network. This program was created specifically with our alumni in mind and it attempts to unite Moffett Nurses in their own communities across the country. Moffett Nurses are special and we hope that you will enjoy reading about some of their many accomplishments in this newsletter. We are immensely proud of our rich history of nursing excellence and the legacy that our alumni and students have helped create.

Whether you are an alumnus, student, parent or friend of the school, I hope that you will consider joining us for Homecoming on Saturday, October 29th. The details of our events are included in this newsletter. You are an important part of both our history and our future and we would be honored if you would join us as we celebrate 89 years of nursing education.

Accelerated Second Degree Students Gain Insight on Legislative Issues

IVMSON E-NEWSLETTER October 2011

On Wednesday, October 5, the Accelerated Second Degree nursing students had the opportunity to meet and discuss legislative and healthcare issues with Joe Decker, Executive Director of the Alabama State Nurses Association, as part of their senior Management class.

On the behalf of ASNA, Decker represents nurses in governmental agencies, the Alabama Legislature, allied health organizations, and the public. He is also responsible for administering all activities and personnel of ASNA in compliance with the American Nurses Association bylaws, House of Delegate’s decisions, and policies of the Board of Directors.

Decker spent time explaining to students the importance in becoming a member of professional organizations, such as ASNA, as well as the difference between state and national associations.

“Mr. Decker’s presentation helped me to understand the differences in professional organizations and how my membership can impact decisions affecting my career and my future patients,” said Shayla Montgomery, an accelerated B.S.N. student from Birmingham.

As part of their Management course taught by Susan Sheffield, MSN, RN and Janet Alexander, EdD, MSN, RN, students learned about healthcare policy and legislature, so Decker was a perfect speaker to bridge the classroom content with real life experience. Students were then required to select a healthcare policy issue they supported and write a paper demonstrating the impact that particular policy has on the healthcare legislative. Along with the health policy paper, student composed a persuasive letter to their state representative or senator in regard to the issue they supported.

Decker’s presentation on current state legislative healthcare bills was extremely informative and gave students a great starting point. A few current healthcare bills he discussed included the Nursing Scholarship Bill (SB209/HB372), a Smoke Free Alabama bill (HB149), and the restriction nurse practitioners of Alabama currently have (i.e. writing prescriptions, etc).

Overall, the opportunity and chance to ask questions to Decker was another exceptional experience that the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing gives students.

Program Spotlight: Moffett Nurse Network

Page 5

Alumni relations are a priority for IVMSON as we seek to connect with and unite graduates from the Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing. With the 90th Anniversary just a couple of months away, the Moffett Nurse Network is expanding and evolving to serve the school’s growing alumni base. Over the past year, we have spent a great deal of time talking to our alumni, and alumni from other schools of nursing to identify the strengths, weaknesses and areas of opportunity in our alumni programs. Through these conversations we have gained invaluable insight into the needs of our graduates and as a result of that dialogue, the Moffett Nurse Network was born. IVMSON launched the Network earlier this year to ease some of the barriers alumni face when trying to connect with their alma mater and other Moffett Nurses. The Network continues to evolve and we are always looking for ways to improve and grow. So far, the Moffett Nurse Network has hosted events in six cities and as a result of these events we have had contact with more than 400 of our alumni. Although not all of these alumni join us at events, they are plugged into a Network of Moffett Nurses in their area and are reassured of our commitment to a longstanding relationship with them. As we travel from city to city, it is always special to see the unique bond that Moffett Nurses share. As a school, we have reconnected with old friends, and helped alumni reunite and expand their networks in their hometown. In one city, we learned that five of our alumni lived within a few blocks of one another and never knew it! Looking forward to 2012, we hope that our alumni will continue to join together and help us celebrate the rich 90 year tradition that makes IVMSON such a special place. If you would like to help facilitate a Moffett Nurse Network event in your area, or if you would like to serve on a planning committee for the 90th Anniversary, please contact Katie Stripling at [email protected].

Upcoming Events for Alumni and Friends

Thanks to a generous grant from the Hill Crest Foundation, the simulation center will now have additional resources to further enhance the integration of simulation into the nursing curriculum. Through a multi-year pledge, the Foundation will help IVMSON continue to invest in the utilization of this revolutionary technology.

Throughout the 2011-12 year, more than 230 simulation events will occur in the center. IVMSON continues to strive for full integration in clinical courses and thanks to the Hill Crest Foundation IVMSON will be closer to achieving that goal. This year IVMSON will extend simulation to include community health. We will also begin development of an informatics curriculum to be integrated into courses as well as simulation. This will include the implementation of an electronic health record and a virtual simulation community.

The Hill Crest Foundation’s investment in the Simulation Center will make a lasting impact on the student experience for the health care providers of the future.

IVMSON E-NEWSLETTER October 2011

It all happened so quickly. I was a healthy 43 year old male with hardly a worry in the world. However, one day after jogging, I noticed some blood in my urine. Follow up tests for kidney stones proved negative. However, after the painless hematuria persisted intermittently for about a year, I underwent a cystoscopy and discovered I had a stage 3 transitional cell carcinoma of my bladder. I was devastated. Therefore, on August 27, 2004, I underwent total removal of my bladder and creation of a new bladder, a “neobladder”, out of twenty inches of my small intestine. Due to my surgery, I had to learn to catheterize myself two to three times per day. I subsequently recovered from my surgery and returned to my work as a nurse practitioner at University Hospital, still in shock of what had occurred in my health. During this time, I learned everything anyone would ever want to know about bladder cancer. Even though I had no major risk factors for bladder cancer, for example, cigarette smoking, I felt that I was diagnosed with cancer for a purpose, perhaps, to be a “poster child” for bladder cancer. Therefore, I submitted a manuscript to Nursing magazine entitled, “Bladder Cancer: Signs, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.” I was delighted to learn several months later that my manuscript would be published. Nursing magazine changed the title to “Bladder Cancer: Revealing News about a Hidden Threat,” but said it

would be published in April 2006. I was ecstatic. Although I still couldn’t understand completely why I got cancer, it was still going to have a positive outcome in that I would have an article published in a national nursing magazine. Then it happened, part two. In 2006, cancer was discovered in my lymph nodes and I underwent three and a half months of brutal chemotherapy with cisplatinol and gemcitabine. While receiving chemotherapy, I was hospitalized four times with anemia and dehydration. One time I was hospitalized with a urinary tract infection and I ended up receiving seven units of blood. My chances of living five years according to my oncologist were 15 to 20 percent. But God had other plans. I passed my five year anniversary of my last chemotherapy treatment in June 2011 and was declared cancer-free, although I still have residual effects from the chemotherapy, in particular, partial hearing loss, renal insufficiency and peripheral neuropathy. Therefore, still trying to comprehend the reasons for my cancer diagnosis and treatment, I felt led to write a book. One purpose for writing was to inform the public about how to overcome cancer based on my experience. In addition, in writing, it would help me deal with the pain that cancer had brought into my life. I am happy to report that my book, A Place I Didn’t Want To Go: My Victory Over Cancer, was published in September 2011. The book deals with the spiritual, emotional and physical challenges of dealing with cancer. It also lists the seven warning signs of cancer, the three types of sickness according to the Bible, and a six step guideline for overcoming cancer. Most importantly, it provides hope for anyone going through cancer or major illness. The title is based on John 21:18 where Jesus tells Peter that one day Peter would be brought “to a place he didn’t want to go”. I was brought to a place that I didn’t want to go, i.e. cancer, major surgery and chemotherapy, but am hopeful that my story will serve as encouragement to others. Encouragement through these difficult times is especially important considering that one out of two men in the United States and one out of three women will experience cancer in their lifetimes. My book, available on Amazon, describes the heartache of cancer diagnosis and treatment, but also trumpets the joy of victory.
