The Prophet Nahum
What about Micah? • Author: Nahum (“Comforter)” – From Elkosh • Date: c 663-612 B.C. (After the fall of Thebes – 3:8) • Purpose: Nahum prophesies primarily against Nineveh (capital of
Assyria), but includes a prophecy of destruction against the Babylonians (who conquered Assyria).
The Lord promised Nahum that the yoke burdening Judah–the conquering Assyrian army–would soon be removed (1:13). Though the Assyrians had perfected the strategic use of their chariots, they would not overcome the Babylonians attacks. The wood, leather, and wicker of the Assyrian chariots would race to their own destruction in the fires of war (2:3-4; 3:13). Nineveh, Assyria’s proud capital, would fall as the Lord of hosts declared (3:1-7).
