the principal which he called “Marobashi”. Marobashi is a deepunderstanding of the nature of combat and is the basis of alltechniques in Yagyu Shinkage Ryu. It is traditionally described asmeeting the opponents acti!ity as freely and naturally as a round

ball rolling on a board or a round stone rolling down a steephillside.

Yagyu Sekishusai Munetoshi was a famous warrior of the Yamato region (present-day Nara Prefecture).

Somewhat more familiar terms conveying the same meaning as marobashi no michi mightbe Fudoshin (immovable mind) or Fudochi (immovable wisdom), i.e. non-abiding, as set forth inTakuan's Fudochi Shimmyo Roku (which also happens to have some relationship with the agyufamily, being originally writings sent by Takuan to agyu Sekishusai's son, agyu !unenori).

An Introduction to akuan!s "ritings on #en and Swordsmanship $% students in a series ofdue&s. In acknow&edgment of Munetoshi!s achie'ement idetsuna awarded him his inka or

forma& sanction designating Munetoshi a master of the New Shadow schoo& together with a
