he will be called counselor
TRANSCRIPT
Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given; And the
government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful,
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase
of His government and peace There will
be no end, Upon the throne of David and
over His kingdom, To order it and
establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever. The
zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
JESUS OUR COUNSELOR
A.This prophecy of the coming Christ that
was given hundreds of years before his
birth tells us that the child that was to be
born would have some very amazing
names. Of course the One that Isaiah is
speaking of is Jesus.
B.Today we want to talk about Jesus as our
counselor.
C.Later in the book of Isaiah we find that the
author speaks of Jesus again when he
says:
JESUS OUR COUNSELOR
D. Isaiah 11:1-4 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. 3 His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; 4 But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
E. Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.”
JESUS OUR COUNSELOR
D. There are many who wear the name “counselor” in this world.1. There are drug and alcohol abuse
counselors.2. There are marriage counselors.3. There are crisis counselors.4. There are mental health counselors.5. There are grief counselors.6. There are financial counselors.
E. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that we, as believers, have access to the greatest counselor imaginable – Jesus Christ.
F. What makes Him the greatest Counselor?
I. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO
UNDERSTANDS YOUR STRUGGLES
A. We have all had experience with people who
tried to give us counsel about something they
knew nothing about.
1. Like the single person who tried to give you
marriage counseling.
2. Or like the childless couple counseling their
friends on how they ought to be raising their
children.
3. Or like the person who has never experienced
a loss in their life counseling a grieving
person “its time to get over it and move on
with your life.”
I. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO
UNDERSTANDS YOUR STRUGGLES
B. Jesus is the greatest counselor because He
understands our struggles.
C. JESUS KNOWS WHAT WE GO THROUGH -
Hebrews 2:17-18 Therefore, in all things He
had to be made like His brethren, that He
might be a merciful and faithful High Priest
in things pertaining to God, to make
propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For
in that He Himself has suffered, being
tempted, He is able to aid those who are
tempted.
I. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO
UNDERSTANDS YOUR STRUGGLES
D. JESUS CAN SYMPATHIZE WITH US - Hebrews
4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great High
Priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our
confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest
who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses,
but was in all points tempted as we are, yet
without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to
the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy
and find grace to help in time of need.
E. The Bible tells us that: “the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us.” John 1:14
I. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO
UNDERSTANDS YOUR STRUGGLES
F. JESUS UNDERSTANDS1. Have you ever been betrayed? He has.
2. Have you ever been wrongly accused? He has.
3. Have people ever gossiped about you?
4. Have you ever suffered physical pain?
5. Have you ever been in physical need?
6. Have you ever felt lonely?
7. Have you ever suffered loss?
8. Have you ever been afraid?
9. Have you ever felt that you have reached the
bottom and there is no way up? 10.He understands.
II. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO
CARES FOR YOU
A. We want a counselor who we know cares about
us.
B. I don’t care how much you know until I know
how much you care.
C. Some counselors only care as long as you can
pay the bill. Not Jesus! He cares about you as a
person. He cares about your character. He cares
about your spiritual growth and emotional
welfare. He cares about the pain you suffer. He
considers you of value and of worth
D. 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your care upon Him, for
He cares for you.
II. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO
CARES FOR YOU
E. Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
F. God helps those who help themselves? 1. God helps those who can’t help themselves. 2. When you see no way out - God steps in - if
you call on Him. 3. Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who
labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
III. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO IS
COMMITTED TO YOU
A. We want a counselor who is committed to help us.B. Hebrews 13:5-6 Let your conduct be without
covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." 6 So we may boldly say: "The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?"
C. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
D. John 10:10-11 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
III. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO IS
COMMITTED TO YOU
E. Romans 8:31-39 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can beagainst us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who ishe who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? >>>
III. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO IS
COMMITTED TO YOUShall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
III. HE IS A COUNSELOR WHO IS
COMMITTED TO YOU
E. Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is also able to
save to the uttermost those who come to
God through Him, since He always lives to
make intercession for them.
F. John 10:29 My Father, who has given
them to Me, is greater than all; and no one
is able to snatch them out of My Father's
hand.
G.Jesus is committed to helping you. He will not give up on you.

JESUS OUR COUNSELOR
B. Psalm 107:8-14 Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 9 For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness. 10 Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, Bound in affliction and irons-- 11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, And despised the counsel of the Most High, 12 Therefore He brought down their heart with labor; They fell down, and there was none to help. 13 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And broke their chains in pieces.
C. Will you come to Jesus for counseling in your time of need.
