The contract price is $409,657.05, but there may be some additional work that could be uncovered during the project. The second contract with Whitaker Contracting Corporation covers the application of the high density mineral bond, HA5. This surface treatment will help to preserve the streets that are not being remediated by Raleigh Paving. This treatment will significantly blackenall of our roads, improve the color consistency of all prior patches and protect the surface from oxidation, solar and water damage. Here too, there may be some additional funds needed if unknown conditions warrant. Both these contracts were developed in concert with our engineering consultants, The Barnhardt Group. The contracts conform with the 2018 30-year road study plan, adopted by the Association last year. Message from the Board

“The mission of the Board of Directors of the Preserve at Jordan Lake is to enhance quality of life, property values, and social interaction of the community. The Board will administer the bylaws and covenants of the community in a fair, fiscally responsible, and ethical manner.”

Roads: The Board has approved two road contracts for 2019. The first contract with Raleigh Paving includes the milling, bituminous surface treatment and overlay of seven streets. It also includes deep patching of distresses on all of our streets as well as a new speed table for Broad Leaf Court.

This treatment will significantly “blacken” all of our roads, improve the color consistency of all prior patches and protect the surface from oxidation, solar and water damage. The treatment is “guaranteed” for five years, but some HOA’s have reported benefits for up to seven years. The contract price is $270,596.05. Here too, there may be some additional funds needed if unknown conditions warrant.

Both these contracts were developed in concert with our engineering consultants, The Barnhardt Group. The contracts conform with the 2018 30-year road study plan, adopted by the Association last year. The plan was reviewed in the September Town Hall meeting and presented at the November 2018 Annual Meeting. The plan is forecasted to save many millions of dollars over the 30 years by using modern, preventative maintenance techniques.

Security & Safety: The committee has submitted and the Board has approved the addition of new video surveillance equipment to protect Association infrastructure. The committee’s recommendation to add a speed table to Broad Leaf Court was added to the Raleigh Paving contract. This speed table will help to “calm” traffic on Broad Leaf, including the water tanker trucks operated by Aqua.

Social: The Pool opening party is scheduled for June 1 and will be managed by the pool committee. Food trucks are being organized for the summer season and a “Thank You” event is being planned to recognize committee members and other volunteers for their efforts. The social committee continues to request assistance from residents with children for the planning and management of activities for children in our community.

Gals on the Go—Jordan Lake Pontoon Boat Tour

April 18, 2019—Meet at the POA Clubhouse at 10:00 AM

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: Gals on the Go will enjoy a two hour guided spring pontoon boat tour on beautiful Jordan Lake on April 18, 2019. Captain David Griffin not only will talk about the development of Jordan Lake but will also point out a wide variety of wildlife and various points of

interest. Go to: http://jordanlake.homestead.com/12.html for additional information about the tour.

As Jordan Lake supports the largest concentration of bald eagles in the eastern United States, these majestic birds can often be spotted soaring over the lake in search of fish and other prey. The best time of year for observing eagles around Jordan Lake is during the spring migration northward, generally April, May and June. Vast, undisturbed areas provide the perfect home for the bald eagle; there's plenty of fish to eat and a mature forest for roosting. Although protection efforts have increased the numbers of this mighty bird, the bald eagle still remains a protected species.

The maximum number for this tour is 14 people. The cost is $20/person including the tip and must be paid in cash to Captain Dave on the day of the tour. (Additional tipping is encouraged, if inclined.) We will meet at The Preserve POA Clubhouse at 10:00 AM to drive to Poe’s Ridge Boat Ramp near Moncure where we will board the boat. We would like 4 drivers, please.

After the trip, we will have lunch at The MOD in Pittsboro. (Website: http://www.themodernlifedeli.com/) Reservations are scheduled for 1:30 PM; if you cannot join us on the boat tour, please come for lunch. Please RSVP as soon as possible to Robin Wiggins at [email protected] or at (704) 661-9489 to reserve your spot on the boat and your lunch reservation. If you are willing to drive, please let Robin know.

If you can only join us for lunch at The MOD, please email Robin by April 11 so that reservations can be made.

We are looking forward to a wonderful day on Jordan Lake. Committee members who organizedthis trip and lunch are Robin Wiggins, Carol Toth, and Lucille Fink.

If you would like additional information about Gals on the Go and would like to be placed on the Gals on the Go email list, please contact Brenda MacNeil ([email protected]) or Robin Wiggins ([email protected]).

The Preserve Book Club

Tuesday, April 23*

Wednesday, April 24**

In April, the Preserve Book Club will be discussing The Radium Girls by Kate Moore: Historical Fiction, 496 pages.

The incredible true story of the women who fought America’s Undark (trade name of luminous paint) danger

The Curies’ newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water,

the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War.

Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these “shining girls” are the luckiest alive — until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.

But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women’s cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America’s early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights that will echo for centuries to come.

Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the “wonder” substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. Their courage and tenacity led to life-changing regulations, research into nuclear bombing, and ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives...
