A Message From Mrs McKenzie
Working Bee
Our Working Bee will be held tomorrow afternoon instead of assembly, from 2-4pm. We are
looking at moving tree branches that were trimmed over the holidays (bring a chainsaw if you
have one), weeding garden beds (gloves, garden tools) and moving gravel into the pot-holes in
the parent car park and bus loop (bring shovels and wheel-barrows). We really need as many
people to come along and help out at this working bee so that we remove any havens for snakes
coming into summer and can fix up the parking issues to support you.
Teacher VS G6 Netball Game
Congratulations to the Grade 6 students, who played a competitive match of netball against the
teachers at recess time on Wednesday. Some great defending skills were shown by the stu-
dents. The height advantage of our staff won out in the scoring, however I can see a re-match on
the horizon!
Shrek The Musical
The school production is quickly approaching and our full run-throughs and dress rehearsals are
happening this week in preparation. Tickets have been sent home today with the eldest in the
family. You will need to bring these with you to the show (matinee or evening) performance. All
students are expected to attend the evening performance and are asked to arrive no later that
6.45pm at their classroom to get ready for the show. There will be a raffle held at the door
should you wish to participate (bring some gold coins!). We look forward to showcasing the
amazing talent of our students and the spectacularly hard work and dedication of Mr and Mrs
Birnie and their backstage crew. See you on Wednesday for the fun!
2020 Prep Enrolments
Prep Enrolments forms for preps for next year are now due back. Please remember to bring
along your child’s birth certificate and immunisation certificate for us to photocopy.
Poowong Preschool
Poowong Preschool would like to remind any families who want to enrol in 3 or 4 year old kinder
in 2020 to get onto this ASAP. Places are filling up very fast across the South Gippsland Shire so
we would hate for anyone to miss out. Please follow the link below to enrol:

Get ready, get set for Walk to School 2019!
Poowong Consolidated School has joined the hundreds of primary schools across Victoria for a fun month of walking, riding and scooting to and from school. By participating, we have a chance to win some great prizes! From next week, Monday 1th of October, we will be encouraging our entire school to walk, ride and scoot to school. If your child can’t walk, ride or scoot to school, there are heaps of ways they can still get involved in the fun. Parents can drop off their children a few blocks from the entrance to the school and walk the rest of the way. Bus travellers can also be involved by walking to their bus stop or part of the way. Kids are healthier and happier when they’re active every day. Walking kids to school is a great opportunity to get them active and build their confidence and life skills. It’s also a chance for everyone to spend some quality family time together. Teachers will be tracking how many students walk to school (or part of the way) each day and prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the event. Our ‘Walk to school’ program will run for the next four weeks, concluding on Friday the 8th of November. Any questions please come and see Mrs Hallyburton or Mrs Lacanaria.

Helping your children with Mathematics
There are a number of general principals which you might keep in mind when you are helping your children.
Building on success is important. Create the impression that learning mathematics well is desirable. Reward effort and see errors as part of the
learning process.
People learn, not so much by being told things, as by working things out for themselves and linking new ideas to ideas that they already have.
You can help by asking your children questions, letting them work out answers for themselves, and then discussing their answers and strategies
with them.
Children need time to think and time to answer. When asking your children questions or talking to them about mathematics, give them time. Be
patient. Wait for them to answer. Also, explain to older children that they need to give younger children time to answer questions, rather than
always answering for them.
Encourage children to talk. Talking about mathematics is an effective way of learning, especially when a mathematical situation arises naturally.
Use mathematical words when you describe things. For example, instead of saying “the big red bucket” you might say, “the 10 litre bucket”. In-
stead of saying “the large packet of rice” you could say, “the 2kg packet of rice”. In this way, children get to hear the quantities being stated as an
everyday way of describing things.
There is no hurry. Children develop their mathematics skills gradually and there is no urgency about developing any particular skill. It is necessary
to work progressively on helping then to learn mathematics. Start now, but there is no particular need to accelerate your chi ld’s development.
