Page 3 Our Week Ahead… Prep news!

Literacy/soundwaves focus: In literacy this week our

Soundwaves focus was ‘e and ‘h’. We also began to look at the

short vowel sound ’e’ in three letter words and our word family

was ’et’ as in ‘net and ‘wet’. Stu-

dents worked on identifying the ini-

tial sound in words and completed

handwriting tasks practising the

correct formation of ’e’ and ’h’

In Buddy time this week we made ‘Lemonade”. Not only did all

of the children have fun making the lemonade, it also provided

the topic for our procedural writing, “How to make lemonade”.

Next week we will write a procedure for how to plant beans,

using “Jack and the beanstalk” as our stimulus.

Maths: In maths this week we continued working with ordinal numbers to tenth

position, and we have continued with our unit on time, looking at analogue clocks and

making time to the hour.

Science: In science this week we revised the different types of movements we have been

observing. We played a game to see how we could move such as pushing, pulling, rolling

and spinning.

Other things to know: Our sounds for news next week are ‘k’ and ’c’. Please help your

child select an appropriate item to share on their news day. If your child forgets their news

, they can always do it the next day.

See you next week!

Mrs Hallyburton.

Grade One

Literacy/ Soundwaves focus: Our focus sound in soundwaves this week has been the n as

in pin and ng as in ring., Other words have included can, snap, sing and song.

Writing focus: This week we continued on with our procedural

writing. The students created their own paper snowflakes and wrote

the procedure they followed to make it.

Maths focus: This week we have looked at patterns. This has included

number, shape and colour patterns.

Chinese: This week in Chinese we revisited the language used for like

and do not like.

Integrated: This week in our lessons on push and pull we revisited what we have learnt so far

about push and pull.

Other things: Next weeks Soundwaves focus is ’the long ‘o’ sound as in go and home. If the students could try

and bring something or talk about something with this sound in the name for news next week that would be great.

Have a good weekend!

Grade 3 Literacy: Our reading focus this week is Word Meaning in Context. Words like flounder and duck have more than one meaning and can be used as a different type of word. That fits in with our writing focus this week also. In writing students have focusing on learning all about the different word types. Knowing this really helps construct great sentences, improve our vocabulary and makes our writing more interesting. We have focused on verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. In Sound Waves we had a focus of ‘ee’ sound words and the different spelling for the sound. Maths: we are doing really great on our doubles and 2x multiplication understanding so this week we learnt about double double (4x). When the students use a visual chart to learn doubles and double doubles they are well on their way at understanding repeated addition, multiplication and division. We have been developing these strategies as one of the tools to help us solve more complex problems. Mrs Anthony is likely to keep quizzing the students on probability this week. I am certain that the students will try their best and they will show an amazing amount of growth for sure (all puns intended). Science: we looked at how the pressure of the air around us was the inspiration and the driving force for the rotation and velocity of a spinning helicopter blade. We conducted a fair test to see if we could work out how and why the paper helicopters we made span around. Mr Horton and Mrs Anthony

Grade Four

Even though it’s been a short one, we have had a packed week of

learning!

Literacy/ Soundwaves focus: This week we have been looking at

word meanings in context. We have been focusing on hoe to use

clues in the paragraphs to help us identify the meanings of various vocabulary.

Our Soundwaves focus sound is ee, ea, e, y, ey, ie, eo, ei and i. Words include succeed, tea, recipe, eighty, donkey,

believe, people, receive and police. We have been learning about the spelling rule– I before e except after c to help us spell

various words.

Writing focus: In writing this week we are focusing on how to procedural pieces. We are writing our own procedural

texts on how to play. Some students have chosen topics such as how to play snap, fruit salad and other simple games.

We have been focusing on the language used and how to be very specific and accurate in our instructions.

Maths focus: We have finished off our multiplication unit and have used our doubles knowledge to solve large

multiplication equations such as 63 x 8, 116 x 4 etc. The students have learnt a new way of doing these using boxes

and doubling. These links are really important and will help the students use a variety of strategies in solving times

table problems up to the 12’s.

Science: This week in science we have been exploring the forces of air that push against flying objects. We have been

identifying the push of air and the pull of gravity acting on paper helicopters we made.

Other things to know: The students have been looking at how the brain works and the importance of growth mindset

vs fixed mindset. We have been learning that by tackling challenges, adapting new ways of thinking and learning,

being positive and forming new connections can rewire, change and adapt our brain

strength and intelligence. The students have been amazed, interested and really engaged

in this and we will continue to work on how we can be more positive in our learning and

building resilience.

Have a great weekend!

Grade 5 News

We have had another excellent working week at school.

Literacy/Soundwaves focus: This week we studied the graphemes “ i-e, y, igh, I, ie” ice-cream, fly,

night, spider, pie.

Writing focus: This week we have continued writing our procedural text on the correct procedure to

revive an unconscious patient.

Maths focus: This week our focus has been on the vertical setting out of multiplication. We have looked at various methods to solve multiplication

equations to help understand the process fully. The class was challenged to solve a doubling multiplication problem that ended in the millions.

Other things to know: We will be finishing up our literature study on the novel Bridge to Terabithea in the next two weeks. The

class has been enjoying the movie version of the novel this week. The class has been constructing 3D

models based on their understanding of the story. These will be on display for parent teacher interviews

next term.

Regards,

Jim Leicester

Grade Six

Literacy/ Soundwaves focus: Our Soundwaves focus for this week is on

i_e, y, igh, i, ie as in ice, fly, night, spider, pie. We are continuing with

our author study, looking at the works of Jackie French and have

started work on timelines of when her

books were published.

Writing focus: We are continuing with our procedure writing, using

our skills to create a presentation explaining how to play the ‘Reaction

Ball’ games that we have been designing.

Maths focus: This week we are consolidating our understanding of

multiplication and division, exploring a range of visual and pattern

methods to build on our mental strategies.

We also got together with our Prep Buddies twice this week to turn practical mathematics into

lots of fun by making lemonade! It was very exciting to see all our little chefs in action!

All the Best! Mrs. Brew

MUSIC This week in Music we focused on some beat games and pitch. We played a game called pass the beat using a variety of un-tuned instruments, with everyone trying to follow the conductor. We learnt a song called Cooee. The sounds in Cooee go from low to high which is a great word to demonstrate pitch. We had some inventive student that tried hard to disguise their voice so we couldn’t guess who called Cooee. We also played a game of musical Snakes and ladders with some glockenspiel sound effects for climbing up the ladder and sliding down the snakes. The backing tracks for Ukulele Bay have been put together and this week we have been working on recording the lyrics and layering the tracks. It has been tricky to learn about the technology and how difficult it must be for music producers to arrange and record our favorite songs. Mr Horton
