A union ofmind, body & spirit

Neha and Jiya were finally meeting after six months, even though they had virtually connected sometimes, their schedules had not allowed them much interaction. They were both excited to share all that they had been up to during these months. When they met, Neha looked a lot more vibrant than Jiya. As they got to talking, they discussed their new learnings and the highlights from the past months.

NEHA JIYA

I have been following andpracticing the science of Yoga

Oh! I also attended some Yoga sessions

But I am talking about the science of Yoga.

How is that different?

Do you know what Yoga means?Yeah, duh!

The asanas and the pranayamas

That’s a part of Yoga but..Yoga literally means “union”,

to move towards an experiential reality where one knows the ultimate nature of existence.

I am not sure ifI am understanding

05 06

Page 6: THE PLUS OCT'20€¦ · The past 6 months have made health the central topic of any conversation. While the world is unlocking, we are still wondering what the virus is all about

Yes, it not only improves our physical health but also connects our subconscious minds to our actions and hence allows a holistic healthy living

of our mind, body, and spirit in the union.

In a simpler manner, I would say Yoga is not just something that

you do in the morning or evening. It is a certain way of being. The yogic

science is not just about a yoga class, it is the science of understanding

the mechanics of theentire human system. I didn’t know that!

Yeah certainly, being healthy is a process, a “union” as you would say of our physical,

spiritual, emotional, and mental selves.

Research shows that Yoga even changes

the way the brain works. Some may consider yogic postures as

meditation or flexibility, but they also prepare the body for deep relaxation,

reduce negative thinking, raise awareness, and increase compassion.

Now I am not discarding other forms of exercises, I do those too but Yogic

science has helped me understand health as a relative process.

That is so interesting!

Which is what being healthy really is, right?

I R E A D A B O U T O N E O F YOUR STATEMENTS, "AYURVEDA IS ALL ABOUT MAXIMIZING LIFE POTENTIAL". COULD YOU PLEASE ELABORATE ON THE STATEMENT?

Ayurveda, sometimes termed as Ayushveda, essentially springs from the word longevity, but it means longevity with self actuali-s a t i o n , w h i c h i s f u l fi l l i n g o n e' s p o tential. It's not enough to live a particular length of life, rather about

how we maximize the unique dimensions that

are given to us in that length of life.

Ayurveda is about achieving the knowledge of self actualisation by maximising one’s potential in mental, physical, spiritual dimensions in whatever I may choose to become and maximizing that life potential comes in the interaction between nature and nurture.

H O W C A N W E U N D E R S TA N D T H E I N T E R A C T I O N B E T W E E N N AT U R E A N D N U R T U R E ?

Nature is what I have been given genetically but nurture is the environment in which I grow up, the impact of the environment on m e a n d h o w I r e s p o n d t o t h a t e n v i ronment.

Ayurveda, about 2500 years ago, through our scriptures has stated that somebody whose appetite and metabolism is good , whose tissues are nourished properly, whose excretion i.e. motion and urination is correct and who has the

prasanna atmaah indriya mannah that means who’s got a

happy mind, sensory organs and the soul,

such a person is healthy.

Page 8: THE PLUS OCT'20€¦ · The past 6 months have made health the central topic of any conversation. While the world is unlocking, we are still wondering what the virus is all about

Health is about the whole person in totality. What I stated above posits a very dynamic definition of health, not a static one. There is a constitu-tion given to me by my genes and then I engage in certain behaviours based on the environment around.

You must empower yourself with the right knowledge.

If I nurture my body, mind, spirit rightly at

a young age especially during teenage then I

can run the entire life-time with energy and

maximise my potential.

DEH BALAthe bodily strength which is dependent on inherent natureas well but one can build it too up to a certain point.

AGNI BALAthe metabolism strength or digestive power which again varies on inherent traits and the environment.

SATVA BALAthe mind and spiritual health

H O W D O E S O N E A P P R O A C H T H AT K N O W L E D G E ?

The first thing is goal setting through cultural lifestyle and set of habits towards that longevity.

Then understanding the concept of health and,

actualising it.

And third part is that health is built over

a long period of time.

H O W W O U L D Y O U E X P L A I N T H E C O N C E P T O F H E A LT H ?

Ayurveda identifies three types of strengths:

If all three strengths are good, your health is very strong. Hence one must understand the multidimensional view of strength and therefore of health.

A healthy person is one who can adjust to changing inputs

be it environmental, physical, mental or emotional, whose body and mind is adaptive.

Sometimes I can't change the environment, but I can control my adaptability to it. So the vision for life that the teenagers can decide upon is, "a life without illness".

Immunity is not just the presence of vitamin, zinc, iron, etc. elements in the body. It is the ability of the body to adapt to different stresses coming on oneself be it internally, externally, mentally as well as physically.

C A N T H A T B E A C H I E V E D W I T H A N A P P R O P R I A T E D I E T ?

It is a combination of appropriate diet and lifestyle. The food that I can digest is the appropriate diet for me. If I know that, I will know about my health and how to fix it. T h e f o o d I e a t c r e a t e s c e r t a i n b a c teria in my stomach and the food that those bacteria can digest is the good food for me. It is not necessary that proteins are good for me if my stomach cannot digest them.

One good way to go about it is to follow the classical patterns from one’s grandmother's home roughly, combined with the understanding of where we are living. Being aware of it early on is important. You may eat a pizza once in a while but eat it with awareness. For instance, after having your pizza, coke, icecream, come back home, drink hot water

and sit in vajrasana to compensate and allow better digestion.

Then comes the part of body, mind, spirit. We tend to separate these but there is a very clear correlation between all these and that is what Ayurveda establishes beautifully. It tells how to achieve harmony between the body and mind as well as within the body and mind.

W H A T D O Y O U S U G G E S T T H E T E E N A G E R S S H O U L D K E E P I N M I N D ?

The youngsters should know that it is in their hands. There is a life period for anything to happen. It takes about 30 years for a BP (Blood Pressure) problem to reveal itself; for a small problem to become a big problem. We take antibiotics, suppress it and keep going on.

The body is always talking to us, but we

usually don't listen to our body and our mind.

The behaviours they do today will have an impact 30-40 years hence on the body. This is a life cycle approach and one must be aware of it from the beginning itself of how do I eat, when do I eat, when do I sleep, how do I sleep, is my sleep good.

C A N Y O U E X P L A I N T H E C H A N G I N G I N P U T S Y O U M E N T I O N E D E A R L I E R ?

It is important to be selective of what inputs I bring to myself.

A lot of times we believe only food is the input but along with food, it is also

the sensory stimulus

which is often in the form of stresses that both the body and the mind experience quite extensively these days.

Due to the lifestyle changes, there is a n e a r l y o n s e t o f p u b e r t y n o w a days in children and diseases like PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) have become so common. H o w e v e r, b y c o r r e c t i n g t h e i n a p propriate diet and lifestyle, diseases like PCOD can be reversed. So it is necessary to understand the right behaviour for o n e’ s s e l f a n d u n d e r s t a n d t h e s i g nals of our body.

D O Y O U T H I N K I F T H E C U R R E N T LY R A G I N G C O V I D I S A L S O T A K I N G U S B A C K T O C H E C K I N G O N O U R L I F E S T Y L E ?

The virus is an external stimulus. Instead of blaming the virus, one should look at his/her inability to respond to the virus because it is of utmost importance to take responsibility for one’s own health. We must understand,

the key to my health is in my hands,

not in supplements and quick fixes.

Take life like a 42 km race, where consistency will take you far not the hurry. If hurdles come during the race and you stumble, does not mean you have lost the race, it is a phase you can recover.

H O W D O E S O N E P A C E O N E S E L F A T D I F F E R E N T S T A G E S O F L I F E ?

Have the sense of life values and understand that it is also about timing, and you can pace yourself at different stages. Doing things at the right time is also crucial. It is not just what you do and how much you do, what you eat and how much you eat, but also when you eat, when you sleep, when you exercise, every single thing determines how your body is in rhythm.

Ayurveda is all about the self knowledge to empower oneself with

Fundamentally, modern medicine has become a lot about quick symptom management while ayurveda is a lot about health. It is system syncing, looking at a person i n t o t a l i t y a n d a l s o a t m a n i n r e l a tion to environment (physical as well as mental), so it is a very matured science and requires more knowledge since you need to have a full picture.

Ayurveda medicine would be the future for

talented intelligent youngsters who wish to become a globally acknowledged leader

in healthcare.

The next decade or two will be ayurveda's decade with many Nobel prizes potentially coming from ayurveda.

So those who are interested in positive health making, should look at Ayurveda.

It is often said that your body is the only constant companion that will be with you

throughout the journey of your life. Our body as it carries our spirit through this

world is a medium through which we sense most of our experiences. The physical

body is a stepping-stone for higher possibilities, hence keeping it healthy is

certainly important.

From ancient times, India was familiar with the science of vyayama (exercise) and

its benefits. Physical activity for health and to keep ready for war was an essential

ingredient of the Gurukula education too.

It is all the more important for a young teenager to form a habit of staying active

physically to have a healthier life. A physically fit person tends to :

Even while we are at home, there are ample ways in which we can engage

ourselves in physical activities by being creative with the space and items

available at home. Be it yoga, dance, playing, running, climbing the stairs, etc.

simple physical activities practiced daily can go a long way in boosting energy

levels.

Being healthy has often been linked to having a healthy body. Many times we end up drawing links between a healthy body with a certain weight and appearance. However, health has a holistic meaning to it that consists of various aspects such as physical fitness, emotional balance, mental health, and spiritual growth.

In 1948, the World Health Organisation (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In 1986, the WHO further stated that health is a resource for everyday life. Health is a positive concept, emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.

human emotions9

Emotional health is a person’s ability to accept and

manage different emotions which one undergoes on a

daily basis. Emotions can be understood as waves,

small or big that pass through us from time to time.

S o m e t i m e s t h e y a r e m i n o r fl u xe s o f h a p p i n e s s ,

disappointment, anger while sometimes they are long

phases of grief or utter joy. Learning to balance these

various emotions is considered as maintaining one’s

emotional health.

Emotional health includes both emotional intelligence and emotional regulation.

In ancient India, the concept of emotions has been

understood through Sthayi Bhavas which are micro

sentiments that produce stable emotions. This has

been expressed in Indian aesthetic literature of The

Natya Shastra enacted by Bharata Muni in 200 CE,

Rasas are emotional flavors that can be evoked

The Tides of Tomorrow

Tomorrow, I see the world falling apart,The last drop of water given to the last loyal heart,Innocent souls handed no mercy at all,We’ve killed our sweet planet; simply letting it fall.

Pollution intoxicating what’s left of the air,The earth is perishing, us leaving nothing to spare,Hunger in the eyes of compassionate children,Yet, we ourselves cannot change nor be different.

Global warming devouring nations one by one,Virtuous animals poached just for fun,Fast fashion expanding worldwide,Our oceans suffering with nowhere to hide.

Racism eroding those who still bare,Nonetheless, no one really cares,Screams for help heard from dawn to dusk,However, in the thundering silence no one you shall really trust.

No matter how far we have come,We are only looked at from are demonym,We say we grasp our good from bad,Though we’re all against prejudice, just when it’s a fad.

Vengeance creating nothing but hell,Earth cast under its own nightmare spell,Pessimistic thought of hatred and betrayal,The taste of ice-cold failure.

We must bury the hatchet,For the generations yet to come,All though It is unbearable,United together we shall be done.

Still, we have a chance to change,Before tomorrow rises deranged,We have to stop tormenting our delicate world,And allow the goodness to unfurl,We must save our exquisite planet,Before tomorrow becomes a habit.

Page 14: THE PLUS OCT'20€¦ · The past 6 months have made health the central topic of any conversation. While the world is unlocking, we are still wondering what the virus is all about

For today’s generation, mental health has increasingly

become a foremost concern. as much as it is important to

encourage a conversation more openly and honestly about

mental health experiences, we are also witnessing a risk of

normalizing and accentuating garden-variety anxiety which

is experienced commonly by most growing youngsters.

Mental illness is often thought to be a matter of individual

disorder. Modern psychiatry looks to features of individual

experience, behavior, and thoughts to diagnose mental

illness, and focuses on individual remedies to treat it. If you

are depressed, this is understood as your individual response

to circumstances and the individual is then supposed to get

treated. These are Euro-centric approaches towards the

treatment of mental i l lness that consider the individual

as an isolated unit from their family or community. However

many non-euro centric cultures like the Chinese, Japanese,

or Indian, have had different approaches. They do not

understand emotions as something that lives inside of an

individual, but more as something that exists between

people. In such cultures, emotions are what people do

together, with each other. So when I’m angry, that is

s o m e t h i n g t h a t l i ve s b e t w e e n yo u a n d m e . T h a t ’ s a

c o m pletely different way of approaching health as an

aspect of not just an individual but something that resides

with the community as a whole.

Mental health could be seen as complicated but ifhandled responsibly where not just an individual

but the entire society understands its role and an acceptance comes in to become aware of our minds,

we can indeed take charge of our thoughts and actions.

You’re likely to be in a period where the amount of worry you experience is going to be higher. Anticipate this and be

ready to find out how well you can tolerate this level of worry

23 24

Page 15: THE PLUS OCT'20€¦ · The past 6 months have made health the central topic of any conversation. While the world is unlocking, we are still wondering what the virus is all about

We may refer to it as our soul, as a spirit or as

energy, but spirituality is not a particular practice.

It is rather a core dimension of your innermost self that provides you with a

profound sense of who you are, where you came from, where you are going and how you

may define the path of your life.

I f y o u c u l t i v a t e y o u r b o d y, m i n d , e m o t i o n s a n d

energies to a certain level of maturity, something

e l s e b l o s s o m s w i t h i n yo u – t h a t i s s p i r i t u a l i t y.

S p i r i tual health creates a balance between physical,

psychological and social aspects of human life. The

Indian way has always seen the mind and body as not

separate but deeply integrated and connected. India

has had spiritual teachings for purposes ranging

from management of stress to curing one's i l lnesses.

The practices range from yoga asanas, pranayama,

meditation, or combinations of these and are now

seen as the way to the greater and holistic wellbeing

of both the individual and the society.

Spirituality is not always the same as one’s religion.

The path to spiritual wellness may involve meditation,

prayer, affirmations, or specific spiritual practices

that support your connection to a higher power or

belief system.

As we see today, most youngsters have cultivated a habit of sleeping late at night. As much as it sounds boring parental advice, we know

not having enough sleep makes our entire day lethargic. It is advised to have at least 7-8 hrs of night sleep

to stay healthy. As our grandmothers warn us, sleeping late is a habit only

of the devil!

Detoxing yourself from social media and the internet is a

prime challenge for presently. The endless scrolling distracts

us and often leads to anxiety It is highly recommended that

we have dedicated time in a day for social media or turn off notifications of the apps to be

less overwhelmed.

Cultivate a habit of starting the day

15-20 mins of yoga.Just 10 counts of

suryanamaskar, pranayama and meditation can

replenish you with fresh energy.

Spending quality time communicating with family and friends is something that will

keep our emotional as well as spiritual health in check. It allows our

health a balance and lets healing happen.

Breakfast is considered to be the most important food of the day. Having a wholesome breakfast

launches us with the needed energy to

perform daily activities. Have a balanced diet, and

advisably, have a light lunch and dinner.

The Ideal way of waking up is said to be before the sun rises. We all know of one person either in our family or in a distant relationship who has a habit

of waking up as early as 5 AM. We know that is too much of a stretch for today’s youngsters.

However, a reasonably early time getsus charged up for the day's activities.

While COVID time may not allow us to move freely, however, it is

important to find a park or an open space to

spend time walking, or playing. It is important to stay physically active so

that there is space for new rejuvenated energy.

NEED FOR

GOOD PUBLIC HEALTHCARE

SYSTEMS

As we brace through the Covid-19 Pandemic, health has become the prime concern in all our minds. How would we insure ourselves, our children, and our parents with good health? With many such questions popping up in our heads, the concerns on the Universal Health Care System come in.

So what is Universal Health Care (UHC)? Can it be a good health care policy by a government? Or can it lead to other problems? The topic has been hotly debated by policy commentators across the spectrum. Hence, as active young citizens, it is important to be informed what Universal Health Care means as a government policy, and what are its Pros and Cons?

UHC is a health care system in which all residents of a particular country or region are

assured access to affordable and quality health care. It is generally organized around providing either all or at least those who cannot afford on their own with health services and the means to acquire them. UHC is described by the World Health Organization as a situation where citizens can access health services without incurring financial hardship. When it comes to India, many people experience government hospitals affordable but lacking in quality, while private hospitals are of great quality without being affordable to the common man. Hence, UHC can possibly offer affordable and quality healthcare for all citizens of a state or a nation.

Pandemics such as Covid-19 are a reminder of how precious personal health and relationships are. This gives more room for an important discus-sion on having secure and freer access to quality health care- a much-needed facility for all.

A nation’s well-being largely depends on the well-being of its people under the guidance of a leader who makes efforts in that direction. India's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri was one such leader. A key figure in the Indian Independence movement, he is fondly remembered for the slogan he raised, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’. The slogan served to uplift the morale of the Indian Army and to encourage the farmers to work towards enhancing food production.

Shastri envisioned the need for self-sustenance and self-reliance in India. He integrated the idea of the Green Revolution to boost the demand of India's food production.

Under his leadership, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) or the Amul Dairy Co-operation were set up in 1965.

A significant section of India’s population has largely been agrarian, with dependencies on agricultural produce and cattle milk production for their livelihoods. Having the leader of the nation stand for these concerns and work towards improving them are signs of a healthy nation’s establish-ment which Shastri worked for.

Shastri is also known for leading India though the Indo-Pakistan War in 1965 and for introducing the first committee on the Prevention of Corruption as the Home Minister.

He was the first person to posthumously be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s prestigious civilian award, in the year 1966.

Early-2006, during a bout of depression, a young lady by

the name of Crystal Nunn wrote a desperate letter to

Stephen Fry (English writer and actor). Crystal says:

“ I had no idea who to turn to. But I really needed someone to turn to and to ease the pain. So I wrote to Stephen Fry because he is my hero, and he has been through this himself. And low and behold, he replied to my letter, and I will love him eternally for this. ”

Mr. Fry’s wonderful reply can be seen below.

At a time when most teenagers are finding ways to adjust to the new normal and consume as much learning as they virtually can, 15-year-old Neha Shukla is taking over Nasdaq screens, New York Times, and various internet platforms for her innovation called, ‘SixFeetApart’. It is a motion-sensing wearable technology that contains ultrasonic sensors and buzzers to alert the user when someone comes within a six-feet range, and allow safe social-distancing norms.

Her engineering skills combined with her need to find a solution, lead to the ‘SixFeetApart’ cap. Neha is attending Cumberland Valley High School in Pennsylvania and is a STEM enthusiast.

Neha attended the Girls With Impact entrepreneurship academy, a program where she explored innovation, target market analysis, budgeting, and strategic partnerships. She currently serves as the Girls With Impact entrepreneurship and innovation ambassador and is a member of the NextGen Advisory Board. She has also founded a STEM and innovation section in the Journal of International Thought while working with the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg.

She is now exploring different casing and devices to make the device more accessible by fitting it inside other wearables. She wants the device to be put to work in schools, for frontline workers, and vulnerable sections like the elderly and the immune-compromised.
