What is band like? by Timmy Lawal

Have you ever heard the CEL band (simply named “Band”) and thought, “What is it like to be in band?”. Well today, you are in for a treat. We’ll be looking at band through the eyes of our wonderful director--Mrs Crim--and two band members (one in 8th grade & a 5th grader). I myself, would also spend two days in the band room observing.

According to Wyatt O’Donoghue (8th grade band member who’s been in band since the 5th grade), Band is “about having fun and playing music. Everyone just does their job” So not only do they have fun and goof around, they also get their work done on time.

In my second day in band, I noticed that 5th graders who were new to band were taught how to play their instruments by older band members. According to Jacob Wilson (fifth grader), “Alex (6th grader who teaches him) tries to reach him in a funny way”. After hearing Jacob play, I’d say that Alex’s way of teaching works.

Finally, I would like to say that even if they are small in number, they have a really powerful and harmonious sound that leaves listeners speechless.

Wanting your phone in School?

Sometimes I wish we could, but would we even be learning with them in the same room? Think about it, would our phones do us any good in class? Sure we sometimes use them to search things about what we’re learning, but we also use them for social media, games, music and we use the internet to search for a song that we don’t have on our playlist or a song a friend recommends for us to hear.

I don’t think we should have our phones during class, but I think we should have them during lunch because we aren’t learning anything in lunch.

To begin, preheat your oven and bake the cake according to the box directions. (After you bake remember to turn off the oven). Next, let it cool COMPLETELY! Then grab a bowl and crumble the cake into piece. After you finished that, then add in the ⅓ cup of icing. The mixture should be dense, not gooey. Then grab your cookie scoop(or your hands) and make cake balls. Pack them lightly so they don't fall apart. Grab your candy melts and dump them in a microwavable bowl. Put the bowl in the microwave. When melted, take a lollipop stick and dip it in the melted chocolate and quickly slide a cake pop onto the stick. Repeat as many times as you can. Then put on a tray with the sticks in the air. Freeze for 15 minutes or refrigerate for 30 minutes. Then take more candy melts and a cup and microwave until melted. Then take cake pop and dip into the candy melts evenly. Place on cookie sheet. Then put christmas sprinkles and enjoy when hardened!

The meaning of Hanukkah in hebrew is “to dedicate.” Hanukkah is also commonly known as the Festival of Lights or the Festival of Dedication. It is a Jewish holiday, and it is celebrated for 8 days. This year, it started on December 3, 2018. Families celebrate by exchanging gifts each night of the holiday. They also celebrate by feasting on traditional foods such as potato pancakes, jam stuffed donuts, and fritters.

The History of Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a seven day holiday that celebrates African-American culture and heritage. It goes from Dec. 26th - Jan. 1st. People decorate in African art and use different symbols. The men wear traditional shirts called a dashiki and a hat called a kufi. They use a special mat to set a traditional unity cup, and a candle holder which holds 7 candles. They also eat special foods such as different fruits, veggies, and nuts. They also pass around gifts like we do on Christmas.

The History of Yule

Yule is another holiday observed from December 21 through January 1. You may have also heard people say that this is the start of the winter solstice. People that celebrate this holiday are historic German people, Wiccans and the Northern European Christians. People burn a log for the 12 days of Christmas. Then, they take the ashes and spread them across the field hoping that this will bring them a good crop in the coming year.

Mr. Hoffert grew up in a family that had a great respect for art and were really good at it too. He originally wanted to go into graphic design but didn't enjoy the really full classes. He then decided to go into art education. All of his 22 years as a teacher have been at Chester East Lincoln.

Featured Teacher Mr. Hoffert

Perhaps the biggest struggle Mr. Hoffert faces is that he doesn't have a curriculum to follow. The fact that he must come up with projects for kindergarteners and 8th graders alike can be very difficult. He said his favorite part of the job was the chance to pass on his knowledge to the next generation. Most schools don't think art education is very important, but Mr. Hoffert and Chester East think art education is valuable.

The History of Candy CanesCandy Canes originated in Germany about 250 years ago. They used to be plain white sugar sticks. A choirmaster gave some children a candy stick so they would keep quiet during the Christmas service. The candy cane got its shape when the choirmaster bent the suger sticks into a hook shape to represent a shepherd’s hook. Sometime in the 1900’s peppermint and wintergreen flavors were added which gave the candy cane its stripes. Around the 1920’s, the candy cane began being massed produced by BOB’s candy. Today there are a whole bunch of candy cane flavors like black licorice, jolly rancher, cherry, cotton candy and pickle... By Sebastian Hill

The Band Queen By Brenna and Jayden

Some of you may know that a movie about Queen was out in theaters a few weeks ago. The movie was called Bohemian Rhapsody. We thought we’d do a little digging about this crazy, popular band. We found out there were four members, Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor. Mercury was the lead singer, May was the guitarist, Deacon was the bass, and Taylor was the drummer. They had their first tour in 1974 in the US, as they played as an opening act for a band called Mott the Hoople. May and Taylor were in a psychedelic band called Smile before they even met Mercury. Eventually, they got put into the three different Hall of Fames. Their first one was Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Their second one was in 2003 when they were put into the Songwriters Hall of Fame Then their third one was in 2004 and that was the UK Hall of fame.

Facts about the members of Queen.

Next, we found some interesting facts about all of the members of the band. Freddie Mercury, the lead singer, was born in Stone Town, Zanzibar in 1946. His real name was Farrokh Bulsara but started going by Freddie when he was going to boarding school near Mumbai. He legally changed his name in 1972 when Queen was formed. Freddie got a degree in art and graphic design at Ealing Art College. He designed the Queen Crest logo. He was reportedly very shy as a kid which is surprising considering how he acted on stage. He was a big cat lover and at one point he had 10 cats living with him. He had an album dedicated to his cats and a song to his cat called “Delilah”. Sadly, Freddie died in 1990 at the age of 45. He does have a statue dedicated to him at the University of London. He was the first rock star to have a statue in England. Then, there’s Brian May. May was the guitarist in the band. Before he even got started with music, he was an accomplished scholar. May at that time studied astronomy and physics at Imperial College in London. May built his guitar with his dad, and he liked to call his guitar “Red Special” Brian's birthday is July 19, 1947, and he is still alive to this day. Next, another member of the band was Roger Taylor. He was the drummer for Queen. His birthday is July 26, 1949, and he is 69 years old. He has three kids, all girls. After the band broke up, Roger was the first band member to go solo in 1977. Lastly, there is John Deacon. He was born on August 19, 1951, in Leicester, England. He started playing guitar when he was 14, but he switched to bass eventually. When he first found the band Queen, he wasn’t impressed but months later after meeting members of the band, he joined Queen.

Page 23: The Panther ROAR

Mrs. Crim’s thoughts on Queen.Next, we interviewed a few people from our school about the band Queen. We know that Mrs. Crim knows a lot about music because she is our music teacher here. We decided to interview her because we know she is a big fan of them. We talked to her about the band and how she found their music. She discovered Bohemian Rhapsody in high school, but then found the real beauty of the band in college. According to Mrs. Crim, one reason she likes Queen is that they didn’t care what people thought of them. They didn’t try to be anybody they weren’t supposed to be. They just played their music. “ Kind of like me” she added. “Killer Queen,” “Radio Ga Ga,” and “Under Pressure” are her favorite songs by the band. Freddie Mercury is her favorite member of the band. His crazy personality makes it easy for people to like him.

Page 24: The Panther ROAR

What people thought about the movie... Lastly, we interviewed two people that have seen Bohemian Rhapsody. We interviewed Mrs. Steffens and Wyatt O’Donoghue. We asked them both 3 questions. We’ll start with Wyatt. Wyatt learned from the movie that you can accomplish things. The movie also inspired him when Freddie Mercury overcame his problems that he was facing. Lastly, he said: “It was very good. I recommend it.” Next, we interviewed Mrs. Steffens. Mrs. Steffens learned that “Living a life of fame is often shadowed with pain and sadness and loneliness.” Next, what inspired her about the movie was “how Freddie and Mary remained friends and deeply cared for each other throughout their struggles.” Lastly, she thought the movie was “well-done. It seemed to be a true reflection on the history of Queen.” I also saw the movie(Brenna), and I thought it was a great. It showed all of their struggles, and how they got through them. It just shows parts of their life story that some people may have not known about, and how they made their music.
