Hello Lions!

Welcome to the November edition of The Roar!

Can you believe we’re already halfway through the 2014-2015 term? I want you all to think all the way back to the very beginning of the term. Remember District Convention 2014? And our first Division Council Meetings together? In six months or so, it’ll be happening all over again!

Take full advantage of these next months by performing all the service you can, raising funds for Project Eliminate, and experiencing Key Club on an unprecedented level. I assure you these months together will go by much faster than any of us can anticipate, so let’s be sure to make the most of it.

It was the greatest pleasure to see a handful of you at Region 3 Training Conference on October 11. I hope you all were able to gain new skills and information to bring back to your respective clubs. Likewise, I am so proud of all of you who participated in the spirit session! Although we did have a rather small section of attendees, the amount of spirit and passion from Division 41 South was unparalleled and makes me so proud to serve this division.

I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish at Fall Rally and throughout the rest of the term!

This event, held in Santa Margarita Central Park on Sunday, October 5, brought people of all kinds from all over the community to have a night out with friends and family.

The Key Clubbers worked arduously throughout the heat of the Californian fall, selling tickets, giving smiles, and p rov i d i n g i n fo r m a t i o n fo r t h e attendees. Each member was divided, each with a unique responsibility of manning the ticket booth. Although confusion was thrown and things were more difficult than they seemed, each member helped one another in order to provide a better experience for those families spending their leisure at the festival. The good work ethic of all of the Key Club members made the volunteer work go by easily while making it fun for every member in the meantime.

Throughout this volunteer experience, one standing by the sidelines can see the hard work each and every one of the members exhumed for this service. The amount of effort placed by every member was immeasurable; each member’s goal was to be able to do the job right and get the job done.

Key Club member Emily Tonnesson commented, “This was my first Key Club event, and I thought it was super fun and I totally loved it.” The wholehearted smiles and the feeling of accomplishment seen at the end of the event are what tie Key Club members together. The new and old bonds created and strengthened throughout the festival are what Key Club is all about. Having fun after hard work is not a bad thing. In fact, it is good to reward yourself a little for what you have done. And, in this case, I believe that the hard work portrayed by the Laguna Hills High School Key Club members was definitely deserving of a little time to let loose.  

As Mitch Albom (the author of Tuesdays with Morrie) once said, “So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.”

This past weekend, Laguna Hills Highschool’s Key Club teamed up with SAMLARC (Rancho Santa Margarita Landscape and Recreation Corporation) to provide family fun entertainment for families at the annual Rocktoberfest.

Tesoro’s Key Club kicked off the start of the new school year with Club Rush.

Club Rush was a huge success as countless freshmen and underclassmen came to our table and asked questions about Key Club and the various things we do. As music blasted and the hustle and bustle took over our school, I had the chance to talk about past events our club has done such as painting the halls of the school over the summer, volunteering at the library, helping at various marathons, and making Joy Jars at NEGU (Never Ever Give Up). It was a wonderful experience to chat and talk with new potential members and discuss the events and activities I’ve attended throughout my own experience as a member. There never seemed to be an end to the line of people or the questions about service that came our way. Key Club is known throughout our school as a primary service club and I have no doubt that there will be many new recruits to our club. I would say Club Rush was the perfect start to a new year of volunteering.
