The Office of Student Activities has spent the fall semester providing students with great entertainment, live music, meaningful speakers, high energy sports, wellness experiences, and lots of opportunities to impact the community through volunteering. Our team has also implemented a few new programs this semester to keep student programming at the Lake Worth Campus fresh and innovative. One of the most recent programs that we have offered to student club leaders, members, and advisors is our Intra-Club Council (ICC) workshops. These workshops help club members develop their leadership skills by exposing them to topics such as fundraising, steward- ship, and member recruitment and retention. These workshops have not only enhanced leadership skills among students but have also created opportunities for peer-to-peer interaction between members of student clubs on campus. Also, our Wellness lecture luncheons for students, faculty, and staff have been added to our event calendar this semester. The wellness lecture luncheons have covered the topics of nutrition, breast cancer, and diabetes. If you have not had a chance to attend one of these new programs please join us in the spring, as they will both be offered. Again. Check out the Student Activities calendar on the back of this newsletter to check see when these programs, in addition to all of our other events and activities, will be held spring semester! The Lord's Place is a nonprofit, non-sectarian organization that has been changing the lives of homeless families and individuals in Palm Beach County for over 30 years. This organization provide programs that focus on activities which build trusting relationships and encourage participants to explore making behavioral change. In addition to purposeful activities, the center provides hot meals, peer mentoring, a resource center, job training and placement, and referrals for housing and support services.

Eleven students and staff from Palm Beach State College served a delicious Thanksgiving meal to the clients of The Lord’s Place on Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Students assisted with serving Thanksgiving-style meals prepared by Café Joshua apprentices, clients who are struggling with homelessness and are enrolled in the agency’s job training program. While serving, the students were also encouraged to also grab a plate and join the clients sitting at the table to engage in conversation. Student volunteer Sabina Exy said, “I am so happy to have volunteered at The Lord’s Place. I learned so much about the agency and their mis-sion. Mostly, I personally learned so much from sitting with the clients. Homelessness does not discriminate; it affects all walks of life no matter what race, gender or creed.”

Palm Beach State College, Lake Worth chapter of Phi Beta Lambda will be partnering with the March of Dimes, the nation-al philanthropy of Phi Beta Lambda ΦΒΛ, to prevent and raise awareness of premature births. The March of Dimes was found-ed in the late 1930’s by Franklin Delano Roosevelt to help con-quer polio. This same organization evolved into one of the larg-est organizations supporting the health of children in America. Efforts to educate expectant parents regarding pregnancy risks and support for the families of babies born prematurely have saved the lives of countless babies. On November 21, a repre-sentative from the Palm Beach chapter of the March of Dimes visited the ΦΒΛ meeting to speak about the cause and why outreach to the community is important. ΦΒΛ has always been a proud affiliate of the March of Dimes. Last spring, members participated in the Palm Beach County March for Ba-bies at John Prince Park, and raised $370 to help prevent prem-aturity. This year, their goal is to raise far more. ΦΒΛ members are currently carrying baby bottles and collecting change for the March of Dimes. In addition to fundraising ef-forts ΦΒΛ is excited to announce that a “March for Babies”, a walk to raise funds that will help prevent prematurity and sup-port the families of premature babies. ΦΒΛ members hope to see you there!

PBSC student volunteers shined in a sea of pink shirts, hair, and even bedazzled bras for the fight against breast cancer at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on October 22, 2011. Our male students showed their support by donning pink bras as they assisted with the set up and break down of the event. They handed out water and cheered the walkers along the 5K path in downtown West Palm Beach. More than ten thousand people joined in the fight against breast cancer Saturday morning in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

This fall semester has been one of Student American Dental Hygiene Association’s (SADHA) biggest and best! SADHA has been very involved with community outreach activities. Student members recently volunteered at “A Day for Children” which is an annual health fair featuring free health care and education for local youth. SADHA students also provided dental screenings and fluoride varnish for Special Olympic ath-letes this fall season. Another recent activity they participated in was Headstart of Palm Beach Country where over 300 preschool children were given dental exams, patient education, and fluoride varnish applications at the Dental Hygiene Care Center at PBSC, Lake Worth Campus. SADHA also shares a special relationship with the Caridad Health Clinic in Boynton Beach, which opens its doors to all in the community who do not have health or dental care. Students volunteer once a month to work side by side with licensed dental professionals to provide preventive dental care, screenings, and fluoride varnish. If you would like to utilize dental services at Palm Beach State College please visit the Dental Hygiene Care Center. Many preventive dental services are available to students, staff and faculty for only $20. Call (561) 868-3757 for details or stop by and make an appointment.

Saturday morning

Every year thousands of new college-bound students get their first glimpse of Florida from the windows of their vehicles as they travel along Florida’s highways. As we all know, first impressions can be long-lasting, and it’s because of this that the members of Phi Theta Kappa’s Delta Omicron Chapter decided to make their campus, Palm Beach State College, look spectacular. The chapter wants clean, green tree-lined roadways to the College that truly represent Palm Beach State College campus’ extraordinary and inviting beauty.

Friday, November 18, 2011, marked the first-ever Field Day at Palm Beach State Col-lege, Lake Worth Campus. Despite the rainy weather, 50 students, 10 faculty and staff, plus 12 student volunteers joined for various relay races, kickball, ultimate Fris-bee, climb the outdoor rock wall, and jump rope activities. This event created friendly competition and camaraderie among students, faculty and staff alike at the Lake Worth Campus. There were two teams named co-champions for this event, the Green team comprised of mostly faculty and staff, scoring a total of 51 points, and the Blue team comprised solely of students, scoring a total of 49 points. Other individual winners of Field Day competitions were Joe Carlson (16 seconds), Kevaughn Thomas (15.49 se-conds) and Toya Roache (35 seconds) for their fast rock wall climbing times, Andres Diaz for the home run derby, hitting a total of 7 home runs, and Anderson Phoebe, for the last jumper standing in the jump rope competition. With the success of Field Day this year it is without doubt that it will be held again next year. If you did not have an opportunity to join in on the fun this year, make sure you get the chance to next year!

SADHA 2011-2012 dressed up for fall festivities.

Therefore they take action in cleaning their adopted highway, 6th Avenue South; which is the road that leads right from I-95 to the Lake Worth campus. Twice a semester on a Saturday beginning at 8:00 a.m. members from the chapter demonstrate fellowship and exemplify leadership in their effort to clean up the roadway. Even though at the end they are all exhausted, they share a sense of accomplishment, having provided a service to their community and their College.
